(1er Paralipomena in the Vulgate Bible)
Introduction to the two books of Chronicles
1° Their unity.— Like the books of Samuel (1 and 2) and the books of Kings (1 and 2), the books of Chronicles originally formed a single text: we have the authors of the Talmud as guarantors of this (Baba bathra, ( , f.14), the historian Josephus (C. Apion., 1, 8), Manetho (Ap. Euseb., Hist. Eccles., 4, 26), Origen (Ibid., 6, 25), Saint Jerome (Praef. Ad Domin. Et Rogat. "First, it must be understood that for the Hebrews, the books of Chronicles are one single book, which we have divided because of its length."), all the manuscripts of the Bible written in Hebrew. The division, which is entirely artificial, is in no way required by the subject: it was the Septuagint [Jewish Bible, written in Greek 250-200 BC] that introduced it (Παραλειπομένων πρώτη, δευτέρα). The division was not logically flawed – between the reigns of David and Solomon.
2° Their name. — In the Bible written in Hebrew, our double writing is called Dibré hayyâmim, or "Verba dierum", as Saint Jerome translates it very well (Loc. Cit.), that is, "Acta diurna," a title which generally designates a political journal similar to those regularly kept in certain courts of the East. Cf. Esther 2, 23; 6, 1; 10, 2. However, it must be taken here in a broad sense, since the Chronicles do not contain continuous and complete annals. Saint Jerome had initially adopted this Hebrew name, simply substituting the equivalent name "Chronicle" ("Verba dierum, quod significantius Chronicon totius divinae historiae possumus appellare."). Prologue. Galeat.): hence the words Liber chronicorum, Chronica, which are found in several early editions of the Vulgate [the Bible written in Latin], and also in most Protestant translations of the Bible. But the title of Παραλειπομένα, or Chronicles, The title, placed at the beginning of the book by the translators who lived in Alexandria (in Egypt), prevailed very early on. However, it is less accurate, for it literally means "the things omitted"; it would therefore tend to make the entire work appear as a mere supplement, intended to fill the gaps in the Books of Kings (this opinion seems to have been quite widespread among the ancient ecclesiastical writers). "Paralipomenon means in Greek what we call omitted or left out." St. Isid. of Seville, Origin., 6, 1. Cf. Theodoret, Praef. In libr. Reg., etc.), and we will soon see that we must look more than that in the Dibré hayyâmim.
3° The subject and the purpose. — The Book of Chronicles opens with a brief outline of the history of God's people from Adam to David, in the form of genealogical tables (1 Chr. 1-9). After recounting the death of Saul as a transition (1 Chr. 10), the author presents at considerable length the events of David's reign (1 Chr. 11-29), then describes, at varying lengths depending on the demands of his plan, the reigns of Solomon, Rehoboam, and all the kings of Judah up to Zedekiah (2 Chr. 1-36, 1-21); he concludes abruptly with an abridged quotation from the edict that ended the Babylonian captivity (2 Chr. 36, 22-23). Nothing is mentioned, at least not directly, of the schismatic kingdom of Israel.
This summary shows that the Books of Chronicles occupy a unique position in the Old Testament, since, on the whole, they do not present a new narrative, but simply reproduce a significant part of Jewish history, as already recounted in the two books of Samuel and the two books of Kings. Often, there is an almost straightforward repetition of the same events, with only verbal differences: List of passages common to the Books of Chronicles, Samuel, and Kings: [1 Chr. 10:1-19 = 1 Sam. 31 = 2 Chr. 1-6:11-14 = 1 Kings 15:17-24], [1 Chr. 11:1-9 = 2 Sam. 5:1-3:6-10 = 2 Chr. 18, 2-34 = 1 Kings 22, 2-35], [1 Chr. 11, 10-47 = 2 Sam. 23, 8-39 = 2 Chr. 20, 31-21, 1 = 1 Kings 22, 41-51], [1 Chr. 13, 1-14 = 2 Sam. 6, 1-11 = 2 Chr. 21, 5-10, 20 = 2 Kings 8, 17-24], [1 Chr. 14, 1-17 = 2 Sam. 5, 11-25 = 2 Chr. 22, 1-9 = 2 Kings 8, 25-29; 9, 16-28], [1 Chr. 15, 16 =2 Sam. 6, 12-23], [1 Chr. 17-18 =2 Sam. 7-8 = 2 Chr. 22, 10-23, 21 = 2 Kings 11 ], [1 Chr. 19 =2 Sam. 10 = 2 Chr. 24, 1-14, 23, 27 =2 Kings 12, 1-22 ], [1 Chr. 20, 1-3 = 2 Sam. 11, 1; 12, 26-31 = 2 Chr. 25, 1-4, 17-28 =2 Kings 14, 1-14, 17-20 ], [1 Chr. 20, 4-8 =2 Sam. 21, 18-22 = 2 Chr. 26, 1-4, 21-23 = 2 Kings 14, 21-22; 15, 2-7], [2 Chr. 1, 2-13 = 1 Kings 3, 4-15 = 2 Chr. 27, 1-3, 7-9 = 2 Kings 15, 33-38], [2 Chr. 1, 14-17 = 1 Kings 10, 26-29 = 2 Chr. 28, 1-4, 26-27 = 2 Kings 16, 2-4, 19-20], [2 Chr. 2 = 1 Kings 5, 15-32 = 2 Chr. 29, 1-2 = 2 Kings 18, 2-3], [2 Chr. 3, 1-5 = 1 Kings 6, 1-7 = 2 Chr. 32, 1-21 = 2 Kings 18, 13-19, 37], [2 Chr. 5, 2-7, 10 = 1 Kings 8 = 2 Chr. 32, 24-25, 32-33 = 2 Kings 20, 1-2, 20-21], [2 Chr. 7, 11-22 = 1 Kings 9, 1-9], [2 Chr. 8 = 1 Kings 9, 10-28 = 2 Chr. 33, 1-10, 2-25 = 2 Kings 21, 1-9, 18-24], [2 Chr. 9:1-28 = 1 Kings 10:1-29], [2 Chronicles 9:29-31 = 1 Kings 11:41-43 = 2 Chronicles 34:1-2:8-32 = 2 Kings 22:1-23:3], [2 Chronicles 10:1-11 = 1 Kings 12:1-24 = 2 Chronicles 35:1:18-24, 26-27; 36:1-4 = 2 Kings 23:21-23, 28-34], [2 Chronicles 12:2-3:9-16 =
[1 Kings 14:21-31], [2 Chr. 13:1-2, 22-23 = 1 Kings 15:1-2, 6-8 = 2 Chr. 36:5-6, 8-12 = 2 Kings 23:36-37; 24:8-19], [2 Chr. 14:1-2; 15:16-19 = 1 Kings 15:11-16]
However, the differences are no less considerable than the similarities, for often also the Chronicles omit certain incidents, shorten or add others, proving by this that they do not merely form an additional writing, intended to complete older narratives, but that they are in reality an entirely personal and independent work, composed for a special purpose, which is easy to discover.
The aim was to group together, in a condensed form, the principal events in the history of the royal house of David, in order to present them to Israel, at the end of the Babylonian exile, as a valuable lesson, as a revealing mirror in which the religious and moral conduct of the theocratic nation, so tested for its past sins, would be indicated in advance. Everything easily comes down to this end, which, as we see, is none other than to paint the ideal portrait of the reborn Israelites, to help them lead, in all its perfection, despite the difficulties of the present time, the holy life that God had prescribed for them and which would draw down upon them His most paternal blessings.
Hence the genealogies at the beginning, to show them their true, glorious place in world history (other genealogical lists are frequent in the course of the narrative. Cf. 1 Chr. 11:26-47; 12:1-14; 14:4-7; 15:5-11, 17-24; 24:7, 18, etc.). Hence the numerous details relating to the construction and ornamentation of the temple, the organization of worship, and the service of the Levites; for religion was the center of Israel's life (it has rightly been said that the narrative is ecclesiastical in the books of Chronicles, political in the books of Samuel and Kings). Hence the history of the schismatic kingdom of the ten tribes, passed over in silence, this kingdom having adopted an anti-theocratic stance from the outset. Hence the lion's share given to the biography of David, the model king, and of several other good kings, such as Jehoshaphat, Hezekiah, and Josiah. Hence, finally, the frequent reflections by which the historian, in a way, underlines the events, in order to draw conclusions from them from a moral point of view and to show the hand of the Lord visible everywhere, either to punish crimes or to reward acts of virtue (see, for example, 1 Chr. 10:13; 11:9; 12:2; 13:18; 14:11-12; 16:7; 17:3, 5; 18:31; 20:30; 21:10; 22:7; 24:18, 24; 25:20; 26:5, 7, 20; 27:6, etc.). This goal establishes very well the unity between the different parts of the work, linking together the genealogies and the narratives.
4° The division. — The two books, considered collectively, are divided into two parts of very unequal length: 1° the genealogical tables, 1 Chr. 1-9; 2° the history of David, Solomon, and the kings of Judah up to the Babylonian captivity, 1 Chr. 10-2 Chr. 36. The second part comprises three sections: the reign of David, 1 Chr. 10-29; the reign of Solomon, 2 Chr. 1-9; the kings of Judah from Rehoboam to Zedekiah, 2 Chr. 10-36.
If we consider each of the two books separately, we can accept the following divisions:
First book of the Chronicles. — Two parts: 1° the genealogical lists, 1, 1-9, 44; 2° the history of King David, 10, 1-29, 30 (two sections: the main events of the reign of David, 10, 1-21, 30; the end of the reign, 22, 1-29, 30).
Second book of Chronicles. — Two parts as well: 1° History of the reign of Solomon, 1, 1-9, 31 (three sections: the Lord blesses the young monarch at the beginning of his reign, 1, 1-17; construction and dedication of the temple, 2, 1-7, 22; main political events of the reign of Solomon, 8, 1;9, 31); 2° History of the kings of Judah from the schism of the ten tribes until the Babylonian captivity, 10, 1-36, 23 (seven sections: reign of Rehoboam, 10, 1-12, 16; reigns of Abijah and Asa, 13, 1-16, 14; reign of Jehoshaphat, 17, 1-20, 37; reigns of Joram, Ahaziah and Joash, 21, 1-24, 27; reigns of Amaziah, Uzziah, Jotham and Ahaz, 25, 1-28, 27; reign of Hezekiah, 29, 1-32, 33; the last kings of Judah, 33, 1-36, 23).
5° The date of composition and the author. — The Chronicles were certainly not composed before the end of the Babylonian exile. Indeed, 1) they end with an abridged quotation of Cyrus's edict, which ended the captivity of the Jews (2 Chr. 36:22-23); 2) they give, at least up to the third generation, the genealogy of the descendants of the holy and celebrated Zerubbabel, who brought the first Jewish settlers back to the sacred land as soon as the exile ended (1 Chr. 3:19-24); 3) the dariques, The coins mentioned in 1 Chronicles 29:7, as common currency, existed only under Persian rule, therefore during the reign of Cyrus; 4) the style is quite similar to that of the books of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther, which postdate the exile. The composition therefore cannot be dated before 536 BC, and it probably even took place somewhat later (around the middle of the 5th century BC); however, not at the later dates accepted by the rationalist school (the end of Persian rule, the Seleucid era, the reign of Alexander the Great).
Jewish tradition unanimously identifies Ezra as the author of the Book of Chronicles, and most believing exegetes, both in antiquity and in our time, have adopted this view. A comparison between the book we are studying and the surviving pages of Ezra confirms the traditional testimony, for it demonstrates in both a similar spirit (in particular, the same fondness for genealogies, for everything pertaining to worship and the tribe of Levi), the same method of composition, and an identical wealth of expressions used with a meaning specific to each text. (The most famous of these is...) kammišpât , to mean: "according to the law of Moses").
6° The Sources of the Chronicles. — A distinction must be made. For the genealogies placed before or interspersed with the narrative, the author used as sources: 1° historical books composed before his own; 2° special documents, which had not been used by the sacred writers, because several of his lists are entirely new (cf. 1 Chr. 2, 18-24, 25-41, 42-45; 3, 17-24; 6; 7, 1-3, 6-12, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39; 8, 1-32, 33-39; 9, 35-44).
For the rest of the work, or for the history itself, he is careful to frequently indicate the writings from which he drew most heavily. 1. The "Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah" (cf. 2 Chr. 16:11; 25:26; 27:7; 28:26; 35:27; 36:8), sometimes called the "Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel," or, in short, the "Annals of the Kings of Israel" (2 Chr. 33:18-19), a probable compilation of the two documents so often cited in the first and second books of Kings under the titles: "Book of the Annals of the Kings of Judah, Book of the Annals of the Kings of Israel." 2. Various historical works, almost all composed by prophets and relating the history of one or another distinct reign. These are the accounts of King David (1 Chr. 27:24); the acts of Samuel the Seer, the acts of Nathan the Prophet, the acts of Gad the Seer (1 Chr. 29:29); the book of Ahijah the Shilonite, the vision of Addo the Seer (2 Chr. 9:29); the acts of Shemaiah the Prophet, the book of Addo the Seer on genealogies (2 Chr. 12:15); the commentary of Addo the Prophet (2 Chr. 13:22); the acts of Jehu, son of Hanan (1 Chr. 20:34); the commentary on the book of Kings (2 Chr. 24:27); the acts of Isaiah concerning Uzziah (2 Chr. 26:22); the vision of Isaiah (2 Chr. 32:32); The acts of Hozai (2 Chronicles 33:19). We cannot accurately describe the nature and extent of these various compositions; however, it is clear that they were contemporary with the events they recounted and that they came from the most authoritative sources. Their use demonstrates the conscientious research of the author of Chronicles. 3. Undoubtedly, also the canonical books of Samuel and Kings, although they are not cited anywhere.
7° Historical value of the Chronicles; their importance. Despite the serious guarantees this book offers, its veracity has been the subject of unjust and violent attacks. It is claimed to be a biased work that colors history and distorts the facts; moreover, it is alleged to contradict itself and other historical books of the Bible.
It is true that there are a number of errors in the figures or proper names which inevitably create some difficulties for the commentator. However, these are not the work of the author, but of the copyists; and if they are more numerous in the Chronicles than elsewhere, this is due to their very subject matter, since they contain so many proper names or figures, and nothing lends itself more readily to transcription errors.
The importance of our two books could not be better described than by the following words of Saint Jerome (Epist. Ad Paulin): «The Book of Chronicles is an instrument of such importance that anyone who tries to claim knowledge of the Holy Scriptures without it is deluding themselves. Through each of its words and its associations of words, the book touches upon the stories recounted in the Books of Kings [1 and 2 Kings in the Vulgate Bible = 1 and 2 Samuel. And 3 and 4 Kings = 1 and 2 Kings in our current French Bibles. The way the four Books of Kings are referred to has changed among Catholics since the 20th century] and explains a great many of the questions in the Gospel.» Therefore, it holds both historical importance with regard to the Israelites and dogmatic importance with regard to the Messiah, solemnly promised to David and prefigured by several of his noble ancestors.
8° Authors to consult They are few in number, because the Chronicles have been less studied than other parts of the Bible. For a detailed explanation, see Theodoret's Quaestiones, and the works of Serarius and Cornelius a Lapide (Cornelius of the Stone).

1 When the Philistines gave battle to Israel, the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell mortally wounded on Mount Gilboa. 2 The Philistines pursued Saul and his sons, and the Philistines killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Melchisua, Saul's sons. 3 The fighting effort focused on Saul; the archers having discovered him, he was greatly afraid of the archers. 4 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and insult me.” But the armor-bearer refused, for he was terrified; so Saul took his own sword and fell upon it. 5 When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell upon his sword and died. 6 Thus perished Saul and his three sons, and his entire household perished at the same time. 7 All the men of Israel who were in the plain, seeing that the children of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, abandoned their cities and also fled, and the Philistines came and settled there. 8 The next day, the Philistines came to plunder the dead and they found Saul and his sons lying on Mount Gilboa. 9 Having stripped him, they took his head and his weapons, and then they sent to proclaim this good news throughout the land of the Philistines, before their idols and the people. 10 They put Saul's weapons in the house of their god and fastened his skull in the temple of Dagon. 11 When all of Jabez-Gilead heard of everything the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 All the worthy men arose, took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons and brought them to Jabesh. They buried their bones under the terebinth tree at Jabesh and fasted for seven days. 13 Saul died because of the transgression he had committed against the Lord, because he had not observed the word of the Lord and because he had inquired and consulted those who summon the dead. 14 He did not consult the Lord, and the Lord put him to death and transferred the kingship to David, son of Jesse.
1 Chronicles 11
1 All Israel gathered around David at Hebron, saying, “Behold, we are your bones and your flesh. 2 “Even in the past, when Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel back and forth. And the Lord your God said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will be ruler over my people Israel.’” 3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them before the Lord at Hebron, and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the Lord spoken by Samuel. 4 David marched with all Israel against Jerusalem, which is Jebus, where the Jebusites, inhabitants of the land, were. 5 The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You shall not enter here." But David took possession of the stronghold of Zion: that is the city of David. 6 David said, "Whoever first defeats the Jebusites will be commander and prince." Joab, son of Zerviah, went up first and became commander. 7 David settled in the fortress, which is why it was called the City of David. 8 He built the city all around, starting from the Mello and in the surrounding area, and Joab repaired the rest of the city. 9 David grew greater and greater, and the Lord of hosts was with him. 10 These are the leaders of the heroes who served David and who, together with all Israel, helped him during his reign, after having helped to make him king, according to the word of the Lord concerning Israel. 11 This is the number of the heroes who served David: Jeshbaam, son of Hashamoni, leader of the Thirty. He wielded his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed at one time. 12 After him, Eleazar, son of Dodo the Ahohite, was among the three valiant ones. 13 He was with David at Phes-domim, and the Philistines had gathered there to fight. There was a piece of land there full of barley, and the people were fleeing before the Philistines. 14 They stood in the middle of the field, defended it, and defeated the Philistines, and the Lord brought about a great deliverance. 15 Three of the thirty captains went down to David on the rock at the cave of Odollam, while the Philistine camp was pitched in the valley of Rephaim. 16 David was then in the fortress, and there was a Philistine outpost at Bethlehem. 17 David had a desire and said, “Who will get me water to drink from the cistern that is at the gate of…” Bethlehem ? 18 Immediately the three men, passing through the Philistine camp, drew water from the cistern which is at the gate of Bethlehem. They took it and brought it to David, but David refused to drink it and instead offered it as a libation to the Lord., 19 saying, “God forbid that I should do this. Would I drink the blood of these men with their lives? For it was at the peril of their lives that they brought it.” And he refused to drink it. That is what these three brave men did. 20 Abishai, Joab’s brother, was the leader of the Three; he raised his spear against three hundred men and killed them, and he gained renown among the three. 21 He was the most highly regarded of the second triad and was their leader, but he did not equal the first three. 22 Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, son of a valiant and wondrous man of Cabseel, struck down the two Ariels of Moab. He went down and struck down the lion in the middle of the cistern on a snowy day. 23 He struck an Egyptian who was five cubits tall, and in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a loom roller. He went down to him with a staff, snatched the spear from the Egyptian's hand, and struck him with his own spear. 24 This is what Benaiah son of Jehoiada did, and he became renowned among the three mighty warriors. 25 He was now more highly regarded than the thirty, but he did not equal the three. David made him a member of his secret council. 26 Valiant warriors of the army: Asahel, brother of Joab, Elhanan, son of Dodo, of Bethlehem, 27 Sammoth of Arori, Helles of Phalon, 28 Hira son of Accès of Thécué, Abiéser of Anathot, 29 Sobbochai the Husathite, Ilai the Ahohite, 30 Maharai of Netopha, Heled son of Baana of Netopha, 31 Ethai son of Ribai of Gibeah, of the sons of Benjamin, Banaiah of Pharaoh, 32 Hurai of the valleys of Gaas, Abiel of Arabah, Azmaveth of Bauram, Eliaba of Shebon, 33 Bené-Assem of Gézon, Jonathan son of Sagé, of Arar, 34 Ahiam son of Sachar, from Arar, 35 Eliphal son of Ur, 36 Hepher of Meshera, Ahia of Pelon, 37 Hesro of Carmel, Naarai son of Asbai, 38 Joel, brother of Nathan, and Mibahar, son of Agarai, 39 Select the Ammonite, Naharai the Berothian, armor-bearer of Joab, son of Zeruiah, 40 Ira of Jether, Gareb of Jether, 41 Uriah the Hittite, Zabad son of Oholi, 42 Adina, son of Siza the Reubenite, leader of the Reubenites, and thirty others with him, 43 Hanan son of Maacha, Jehoshaphat of Mathan, 44 Ozia of Astaroth, Samma and Jehiel son of Hotham of Aroer, 45 Jedihel son of Samri, Joha his brother, the Tosaite, 46 Eliel of Mahum, Jeribai and Josaiah son of Elnaem, Jethmah the Moabite, [47 Eliel, Obed and Jasiel, of Masobia.]
1 Chronicles 12
1 These are the men who came to David at Shikleg, when he still had to stay away from the presence of Saul, son of Kish; they were among the valiant warriors who helped him during the war. 2 They were archers, skilled in throwing stones with their right hand and left hand and in shooting arrows with their bow; they were among the brothers of Saul, of Benjamin. 3 At their head were Ahiezer, then Joash, both sons of Shamah of Gibeah, Jaziel and Phallet, sons of Azmoth, Barachah, Jehu of Anathoth, 4 Samaiah of Gibeon, mighty among the Thirty and leader of the Thirty, Jeremiah, Jeheziel, Johanan, Jezabad of Gedera, 5 Eluzai, Jerimuth, Baaliah, Samariah, Saphatia, of Haruph, 6 Elkanah, Jesiah, Azareel, Joer, and Jeshbaam, sons of Korah, 7 Joella and Zabadiah, sons of Jeroham, of Gedor. 8 Among the Gadites, valiant warriors passed by to David in his refuge in the desert: warriors trained in battle, skilled in the use of shield and spear, having the appearance of lions, as agile as gazelles on the mountains. 9 Ezer was the chief, Obadiah the second, Eliab the third, 10 Masmana, the fourth, Jeremiah, the fifth, 11 Ethi, the sixth, Eliel, the seventh, 12 Johanan, the eighth, Elzébad, the ninth, 13 Jeremiah, the tenth, Machbanai, the eleventh. 14 They were sons of Gad, commanders of the army; one, the smallest, could prevail over a hundred, and the greatest over a thousand. 15 It was they who crossed the Jordan in the first month, when it overflows on all its banks, and who put to flight all the inhabitants of the valleys, to the east and to the west. 16 Some of the sons of Benjamin and Judah came to David in his refuge. 17 David went out to meet them, addressed them, and said: “If you have come to me with peaceful intentions, to help me, my heart will turn to you, to unite us; but if it is to betray me treacherously to my enemies, when no violence is attached to my hands, may the God of our fathers see it and avenge me.” 18 The Spirit came upon Amasai, the leader of the Thirty, and said, “To you, David, and with you, son of Jesse. Peace, peace to you and peace to him who helps you, for your God has helped you.” And David welcomed them and placed them among the leaders of the band. 19 Some of Manasseh's men joined David when he went with the Philistines to the war to Saul. But they did not help the Philistines, for the Philistine princes deliberately sent David away, saying, "At the peril of our lives, he would join his master Saul." 20 As he returned to Zishaleg, some men from Manasseh joined him: Ednas, Jozabad, Jedihel, Michael, Jozabad, Eliu and Shelath, leaders of thousands of Manasseh. 21 They came to David's aid against the raiding parties, for they were all valiant men and leaders in the army. 22 And day by day men came to David to help him, until he had a great army, like an army of God. 23 Here is the number of armed men's leaders for the war who came to David at Hebron, to transfer to him the kingship of Saul, according to the Lord's command. 24 Sons of Judah, bearing shield and spear, six thousand eight hundred, armed for the war. 25 Sons of Simeon, valiant warriors at the war, seven thousand one hundred. 26 Four thousand six hundred sons of Levi, 27 and Joiada, head of Aaron's family, and with him three thousand seven hundred 28 and Sadoc, a valiant young man, and his father's house, twenty-two chiefs. 29 Three thousand sons of Benjamin, brothers of Saul, for until then the greater part of them had remained loyal to the house of Saul. 30 Twenty thousand eight hundred sons of Ephraim, mighty warriors and renowned in their fathers' houses. 31 From the half-tribe of Manasseh, eighteen thousand, who were specifically designated to go and establish David as king. 32 The sons of Issachar, having understanding of the times to know what Israel should do, two hundred leaders and all their brothers under their command. 33 From Zebulun, fifty thousand, fit for military service, ready to the war and in perfect war gear, ready to take their places in battle with a resolute heart. 34 From Naphtali, a thousand leaders and with them thirty-seven thousand, bearing shield and spear. 35 Danites ready to the war, twenty-eight thousand six hundred. 36 D'Aser, fit to go to the army and ready to the war, forty thousand. 37 And on the other side of the Jordan, there were Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, fully equipped with weapons of war, one hundred and twenty thousand. 38 All these men of war, knowing how to arrange themselves in battle, came with a sincere heart to Hebron to establish David king over all Israel, and all the rest of Israel also had only one heart to establish David king. 39 They were there three days with David, eating and drinking, for their brothers had prepared provisions for them. 40 And even those who lived near them, as far as Issachar, Zebulun and Naphtali, brought provisions on donkeys, camels, mules and oxen, supplies of flour, masses of dried figs and raisins, wine, oil, oxen and sheep in abundance, for there was joy in Israel.
1 Chronicles 13
1 David held council with the leaders of thousands and hundreds, with all the princes. 2 And David said to all the congregation of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if it appears to be from the Lord our God, let us send quickly to the rest of our brothers throughout all the regions of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites in the cities where their pastures are, so that they may join us, 3 and that we bring back to us the ark of our God, for we neglected it in the days of Saul.» 4 The whole assembly decided to do so, the matter having seemed appropriate in the eyes of all the people. 5 So David assembled all Israel, from the Sihor of Egypt to the entrance of Emath, to bring the ark of God from Cariathiarim. 6 And David, with all Israel, went up to Baalah, to Cariatharim, which is in Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, of the Lord who sits upon the Cherubim, upon which is called the Name. 7 They placed the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab: Oza and Ahio drove the cart. 8 David and all Israel danced before God with all their might, singing and playing harps, lyres, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets. 9 When they arrived at the threshing floor of Chidon, Oza stretched out his hand to grasp the ark, because the oxen had stumbled. 10 The Lord’s anger was kindled against Oza, and the Lord struck him down, because he had stretched out his hand on the ark, and Oza died there before God. 11 David was angry that the Lord had thus struck Oza, and that place has been called Pheretz-Oza to this day. 12 David was afraid of God that day and said, “How can I bring the ark of God to me?” 13 David did not bring the ark home to the city of David, but he had it taken to the house of Obededom of Geth. 14 The ark of God remained three months with the family of Obededom, in his house, and the Lord blessed the house of Obededom and all that belonged to him.
1 Chronicles 14
1 Hiram, king of Tyre, sent messengers to David, with cedar wood, as well as stonemasons and carpenters, to build him a house. 2 And David recognized that the Lord had established him as king over Israel, for his kingdom was exalted, because of his people Israel. 3 David took more wives in Jerusalem and fathered more sons and daughters. 4 These are the names of the children he had in Jerusalem: Samua, Sobad, Nathan, Solomon 5 Jebahar, Elisua, Eliphalet, 6 Noga, Nepheg, Japhia, 7 Elisama, Baaiada and Eliphalet. 8 The Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, so all the Philistines went up to search for David. David heard of it and went out to meet them. 9 The Philistines, having arrived, rushed into the valley of Rephaim. 10 David inquired of God, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hand?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up, and I will deliver them into your hand.” 11 They went up to Baal-Pharasim, and there David defeated them. And David said, “God has shattered my enemies by my hand, as waters shatter a dam.” Therefore the name of that place was given to Baal-Pharasim. 12 They left their gods there. And David said that they should be given over to the fire. 13 The Philistines rushed back into the valley. 14 David consulted God again and God said to him, “Do not go up after them, turn away from them and you will come upon them from the direction of the balsam trees. 15 When you hear the sound of footsteps in the tops of the balsam trees, then you will go out to fight, for God will go out before you to defeat the army of the Philistines.» 16 David did as God commanded him, and they defeated the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gazer. 17 David's fame spread throughout all countries, and the Lord made him feared by all nations.
1 Chronicles 15
1 He built houses for himself in the city of David and prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it. 2 Then David said, “Only the Levites are to carry the ark of God, for they are the ones whom the Lord has chosen to carry the ark of God and to minister to it forever.” 3 David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the Lord in its place, which he had prepared for it. 4 David gathered Aaron's sons and the Levites: 5 of the sons of Caath, Uriel the chief and his brothers: one hundred and twenty. 6 Of the sons of Merari, Asaiah the chief and his brothers: two hundred and twenty. 7 One hundred and thirty of Gersom's sons, Joel the chief and his brothers. 8 His sons from Elisaphan, Shemeiah the chief and his brothers: two hundred. 9Eighty sons of Hebron, Eliel the chief and his brothers. 10 One hundred and twelve sons of Oziel, Aminadab the chief and his brothers. 11 David summoned the priests Zadok and Abiathar and the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemeiah, Eliel, and Amminadab 12 And he said to them, “You are the heads of the families of the Levites, consecrate yourselves, you and your brothers, and bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. 13 Because it was not you who struck us the first time, the Lord our God, because we had not sought him according to the law.» 14 The priests and Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel. 15 And the sons of Levi, as Moses had commanded according to the word of the Lord, carried the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles. 16 David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their brothers the singers with musical instruments, lyres, harps and cymbals, to make bright and joyful sounds. 17 The Levites appointed Heman son of Joel and, among his brothers, Asaph son of Barachiah, among the sons of Merari, their brothers Ethan son of Cusaia, 18 and, with them, their brothers of the second order, Zechariah, Ben, Jaziel, Semiramoth, Jahiel, Ani, Eliab, Benaiahs, Maaziahs, Mattathias, Eliphalu, Maceniahs, Obededom and Jehiel, the gatekeepers. 19 The singers Heman, Asaph and Ethan had bronze cymbals to make them resound. 20 Zechariah, Oziel, Semiramoth, Jahiel, Ani, Eliab, Maasiah and Banai had lyres made of alamoth. 21 Mathathias, Eliphalu, Macenias, Obededom, Jehiel and Ozaziu had harps at the lower octave, to preside over the singing. 22 Chonénias, chief of the Levites for transport, directed the transport because he knew how to do it. 23 Barachias and Elcana were gatekeepers at the ark. 24 Shebeniah, Jehoshaphat, Nathanael, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, blew the trumpets before the ark of God. Obededom and Jehiah were gatekeepers beside the ark. 25 David, the elders of Israel, and the commanders of thousands set out to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obededom, in the midst of joy. 26 When God had assisted the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, six bulls and six rams were sacrificed. 27 David was covered with a byssus cloak, as were all the Levites who carried the ark, the singers, and Chonenias, who directed the transport of the ark, among the singers, and David had on him a linen ephod. 28 All Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouts of joy, with the sound of trumpets, bugles and cymbals, and with the playing of lyres and harps. 29 When the ark of the covenant of the Lord arrived at the city of David, Michal, daughter of Saul, looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing, she despised him in her heart.
1 Chronicles 16
1 After the ark of God had been brought in and placed in the middle of the tent that David had pitched for it, burnt offerings and peace offerings were offered before God. 2 When David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord. 3 Then he distributed to all the Israelites, both men and women, to each a loaf of bread, a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins. 4 He appointed Levites before the ark of the Lord to minister, invoking, celebrating, and praising the Lord, the God of Israel. 5 These were: Asaph, the chief, Zechariah, the second, then Jahiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattathias, Eliab, Benaiahs, Obededom and Jehiel, with lyres and harps as instruments, and Asaph sounded the cymbals. 6 The priests Banaiah and Jaziel continually blew their trumpets before the ark of God's covenant. 7 It was on this day that David first established that the Lord would be praised through Asaph and his brothers: 8 Praise the Lord, call upon his name, make known his works among the peoples. 9 Sing in his honor, sing psalms in his honor, tell of all his wonders. 10 Glory in his holy name, let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. 11 Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his face continually. 12 Remember the wonders he performed, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced., 13 The race of Israel, his servant; the children of Jacob, his chosen ones. 14 He, the Lord, is our God; his judgments are exercised throughout the earth. 15 Remember his covenant forever. The word he spoke for a thousand generations. 16 From the covenant he made with Abraham and his oath to Isaac, 17 which he established as a law for Jacob, as an everlasting covenant for Israel, 18 saying, "To you I will give the land of Canaan as your inheritance." 19 While you were easy to count, few in number, and foreigners in the country, 20 that they wandered from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people, 21 He allowed no one to oppress them, and he punished kings on their account., 22 «Do not touch my anointed ones, and do not harm my prophets.» 23 Sing to the Lord, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day. 24 Declare his glory among the nations, his wonders among all peoples. 25 For the Lord is great and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. 26 for all the gods of the peoples are idols. And the Lord made the heavens, 27 Majesty and splendor are before his face, strength and joy are in his home. 28 Ascribe to the Lord, families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and power., 29 Give to the Lord glory for his name. Bring offerings and come before him, worship the Lord in holy attire, 30 Tremble before him, inhabitants of all the earth, and the established world will not be shaken. 31 Let the heavens rejoice and let the earth be glad. Let it be said among the nations, «The Lord is king.» 32 Let the sea resound with all that it contains. Let the fields tremble with all that they contain. 33 Let the trees of the forest shout for joy before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. 34 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his mercy endures forever. 35 Say: “Save us, God of our salvation, gather us together and deliver us from among the nations, so that we may celebrate your holy name and glory in your praise.” 36 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. And all the people said, “Amen.” and “Praise the Lord.” 37 David left Asaph and his brothers there before the ark of the covenant of the Lord to continually minister before the ark, according to the task assigned each day., 38 Likewise, Obededom with his brothers, sixty-eight in number, Obededom son of Idithun and Hosah, as gatekeepers, 39 Likewise, Zadok the priest and his fellow priests were before the dwelling place of the Lord at the holy place in Gibeon., 40 so that they may continually offer burnt offerings to the Lord, morning and evening, on the altar of burnt offerings, and so that they may fulfill all that is written in the law of the Lord which he imposed on Israel. 41 With them were Heman and Idithun and the rest of those who had been chosen and designated by name, to "praise the Lord, for his mercy endures forever."« 42 With them, namely, with Heman and Idithun, were trumpets and cymbals for those who were to sound them and instruments for the songs of God. The sons of Idithun were for the gate. 43 All the people went home, and David returned to bless his own house.
1 Chronicles 17
1 When David was settled in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, “Behold, I am dwelling in a house of cedar, and the ark of the covenant of the Lord is in the tent.” 2 Nathan replied to David, "Do what is in your heart, for God is with you." 3 That night, the word of God came to Nathan in these words: 4 “Go and tell David, my servant: This is what the Lord says: You are not the one who will build me a house to live in.” 5 For I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt until this day, but I have been from tent to tent and from dwelling to dwelling. 6 During all the time I traveled with all Israel, did I say a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, saying, “Why do you not build me a house of cedar?” 7 Now you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from tending the sheep, to be prince over my people Israel, 8 I have been with you everywhere you have gone, I have exterminated all your enemies before you and I have made you a name like the name of the great ones who are on the earth. 9 I have assigned a place to my people Israel and I have planted them there, and they will dwell in their home. They will no longer be troubled, nor will the sons of iniquity oppress them anymore, as in the past. 10 and as on the day when I appointed judges over my people Israel. I have humbled all your enemies and I announce to you that the Lord will build you a house. 11 When your days are fulfilled and you go to be with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He is the one who will build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. 13 I will be a father to him and he will be a son to me, and I will not take my grace away from him, as I took it away from him who reigned before you. 14 I will establish him forever in my house and in my kingdom, and his throne will be established forever.» 15 Nathan spoke to David according to all these words and this entire vision. 16 And King David came and stood before the Lord and said, “Who am I, Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? 17 And this is still a small thing in your eyes, O God. You have spoken of the house of your servant for a long time and you have regarded me as a man of high rank, O Lord God. 18 What more could David tell you about the honor bestowed upon your servant? You know your servant. 19 Lord, it is for your servant’s sake and according to your own heart that you have done all these great things, to make all these great things known. 20 Lord, there is no one like you and there is no God besides you, according to all we have heard with our ears. 21 What other nation is there on earth like your people Israel, whom God came to redeem as his people, to make a name for you through great and wonderful deeds, driving out nations from before your people whom you redeemed from Egypt? 22 You have made your people Israel your people forever, and you, Lord, have become their God. 23 Now, Lord, let the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house stand forever, and act according to your word. 24 May it endure, and may your name be glorified forever, and may it be said: Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, is God to Israel. And may the house of David, your servant, be established before you. 25 For you yourself, O my God, have revealed to your servant that you would build him a house, therefore your servant has dared to pray before you. 26 Now, Lord, you are God, and you have spoken this pleasing word to your servant. 27 Now it has pleased you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may remain forever before you, for what you bless, Lord, is blessed forever.»
1 Chronicles 18
1 After this, David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and he delivered Geth and its dependencies out of the hand of the Philistines. 2 He defeated the Moabites and the Moabites became slaves to David, bringing him tribute. 3 David defeated Hadarezer, king of Zobah, near Hamath, as he was on his way to establish his dominion over the Euphrates River. 4 David took from him a thousand chariots, seven thousand horsemen and twenty thousand foot soldiers, David hamstrung all the chariot horses and left only a hundred chariot teams. 5 When the Syrians of Damascus came to the aid of Haderazer, king of Zobah, David defeated twenty-two thousand Syrians. 6 David placed garrisons in the Syria From Damascus, the Syrians were slaves to David, bringing tribute. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went. 7 David took the golden shields that were on the servants of Haderazer and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 David also took a large quantity of bronze from Thebath and Chun, cities of Haderazer; Solomon made from it the bronze sea, the bronze pillars, and the bronze utensils. 9 When Thu, king of Hamath, heard that David had defeated all the forces of Haderazer, king of Zobah, 10 He sent Adoram his son to King David to greet him and congratulate him on attacking and defeating Hadarezer, for Thu was constantly at war with Hadarezer. He also sent all kinds of vessels of gold, silver, and bronze. 11 King David dedicated them to the Lord with the silver and gold he had taken from all the nations, from Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, and Amalek. 12 Abisai, son of Zervia, defeated the Edomites in the Valley of Salt, numbering eighteen thousand. 13 He placed garrisons in Edom, and all Edom became subject to David. And the Lord gave David victory wherever he went. 14 David reigned over all Israel and he did justice and righteousness for all his people. 15 Joab, son of Zeruiah, was in command of the army; Jehoshaphat, son of Ahilud, was recorder;, 16 Zadok, son of Ahitob, and Ahimelech, son of Abiathar, were priests, and Susa was secretary., 17 Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, was chief of the Cherethites and the Phelethites, and the sons of David were first at the king's side.
1 Chronicles 19
1 After that, Naas, king of the sons of Ammon, died and his son reigned in his place. 2 David said, “I will show kindness to Hanon son of Naash, because his father has shown me kindness.” And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. When David’s servants arrived in the land of the Ammonites to comfort Hanon, 3 The princes of the Ammonites said to Hanon, “Do you think that David is sending you comforters to honor your father? Is it not to reconnoiter and destroy and explore the land that his servants have come to you?” 4 Then Hanon seized David's servants, shaved them, and cut their clothes halfway up to their buttocks, and sent them away. 5 David was informed of what had happened to his men, and he sent messengers to meet them, for the men were in great confusion. The king told them, "Stay in Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then you may return." 6 The Ammonites saw that they had made themselves odious to David and Hanon, and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and horsemen from the Syrians of Mesopotamia and from the Syrians of Maah and Zobah. 7 They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and the king of Maah with his people, who came and camped near Medaba. The Ammonites gathered from their cities and came to battle. 8 David learned of this and sent Joab and the entire army, the valiant warriors, against them. 9 The sons of Ammon went out and lined up in battle formation at the city gate, while the kings who had come were apart in the countryside. 10 When Joab saw that there was a battle front in front of and behind him, he chose a corps from among all the elite of Israel and positioned it opposite the Syrians., 11 And he placed the rest of the people under the command of his brother Abishai, arranging them opposite the Ammonites. He said: 12 «If the Syrians are stronger than me, you will come to my aid, and if the Ammonites are stronger than you, I will help you.”. 13 Be steadfast and let us fight valiantly for our people and for the cities of our God, and may the Lord do what seems good in his eyes.» 14 So Joab and the people with him advanced against the Syrians to attack them, but they fled before him. 15 The Ammonites, seeing that the Syrians had fled, also fled before Abishai, Joab's brother, and returned to the city, and Joab returned to Jerusalem. 16 The Syrians, seeing that they had been defeated before Israel, sent messengers to bring over the Syrians who were on the other side of the river, and Sophah, commander of Hadarezer's army, marched in front of them. 17 David received the news and, having assembled all Israel, he crossed the Jordan, came to them, and prepared an attack against them. David drew up his army in battle formation against the Syrians. They engaged him in battle., 18 But the Syrians fled before Israel, and David killed the horses of seven thousand chariots and forty thousand foot soldiers of the Syrians; he also put to death Sophah, the commander of the army. 19 Hadarezer's vassals, seeing themselves defeated before Israel, did peace They were subjugated along with David. And the Syrians refused to help the Ammonites any longer.
1 Chronicles 20
1 At the time of the new year, when kings go to war, Joab led a large army, ravaged the land of the Ammonites, and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem. Joab defeated Rabbah and destroyed it. 2 David took the crown off their king's head and found in it a talent of gold, and on it was a precious stone, which was placed on David's head. And he carried off a very great deal of plunder from the city. 3 As for the people who were there, he condemned them to forced labor as sawyers, stonecutters, or woodcutters, and David treated all the cities of the Ammonites in the same way. And David returned to Jerusalem with all the people. 4 After this, a battle took place at Gazer with the Philistines. Then Saboshai the Husathite killed Shaphia, one of the descendants of Rapha, and the Philistines were humiliated. 5 There was another battle with the Philistines, and Elhanan, son of Jair, killed Lahmi, brother of Goliath, of Geth; the shaft of his spear was like a loom roller. 6 There was yet another battle at Geth. There was a man of great height, who had six fingers on each hand and on each foot, twenty-four in all, and he too was descended from Rapha. 7 He insulted Israel, and Jonathan, son of Shema, David's brother, killed him. 8 These men were sons of Rapha, in Geth; they perished by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.
1 Chronicles 21
1 Satan stood against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel. 2 And David said to Joab and the leaders of the people, “Go, count Israel from Beersheba to Dan and bring me a report, so that I may know their number.” 3 Joab replied, “May the Lord add to his people a hundred times what they are. O king, my lord, are they not all my lord’s slaves? Why then does my lord ask this? Why bring sin upon Israel?” 4 But the king's word prevailed against Joab. Joab departed and traveled throughout all Israel and returned to Jerusalem. 5 And Joab gave to David the task of counting the people: there were in all Israel eleven hundred thousand men who drew the sword and in Judah four hundred seventy thousand men who drew the sword. 6 He did not take a census of Levi and Benjamin among them, because the king's order was repugnant to Joab. 7 God disapproved of this matter and struck Israel. 8 And David said to God, “I have sinned greatly in doing this. Now please take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.” 9 The Lord spoke to Gad, David's seer, saying: 10 “Go and speak to David, saying: ‘This is what the Lord says: I have set before you three things; choose one of them, and I will do it for you.’” 11 Gad came to David and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: Choose, 12 or three years of famine, or three months during which you will be carried away before your adversaries and struck down by the sword of your enemies, or three days during which the sword of the Lord and pestilence will be in the land, and the angel of the Lord will bring destruction throughout all the territory of Israel. Now consider what answer I should give to the one who sent me.» 13 David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Oh, that I might fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercies are very great, and that I might not fall into the hands of men.” 14 And the Lord sent a plague upon Israel, and seventy thousand men in Israel fell. 15 And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, and while he was destroying it, the Lord saw and relented concerning this evil, and he said to the angel who was destroying, “Enough! Now withdraw your hand.” The angel of the Lord was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jesubean. 16 David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, covered with sackcloth, fell facedown to the ground. 17 And David said to God, “Did I not say to take a census of the people? I am the one who has sinned and done wrong, but these, these sheep, what have they done? Lord my God, let your hand be upon me and upon my father’s house, but not upon your people to destroy them.” 18 The angel of the Lord commanded Gad to tell David to go up and erect an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 19 David went up, according to the word of Gad which he had spoken in the name of the Lord. 20 Ornan, having turned around, saw the angel and he hid himself, he and his four sons: Ornan was threshing wheat at that time. 21 When David arrived near Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, immediately coming out of the threshing floor, he bowed down before David, his face to the ground. 22 David said to Ornan, “Give me the site of the threshing floor so I can build an altar to the Lord there. Give it to me for its full value in silver, so that the plague may be averted from the people.” 23 Ornan said to David, “Take it and let my lord the king do as he pleases. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offering, the sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering; I will give all of this.” 24 But King David said to Ornan, “No. I will buy it for its full value in silver, for I will not take what belongs to the Lord, nor will I offer a burnt offering that costs me nothing.” 25 David gave Ornan a weight of six hundred shekels of gold for the site. 26 And David built an altar there to the Lord and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. He cried out to the Lord, and the Lord answered him by fire that came down from heaven on the altar of burnt offering. 27 And the Lord spoke to the angel, and the angel put his sword back into its sheath. 28 At that time, David, seeing that the Lord had answered him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, offered sacrifices there. 29 The tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses had built in the desert, and the altar of burnt offerings were at that time on the holy place at Gibeon. 30 But David could not go before that altar to honor God, because he had been terrified by the sword of the angel of the Lord.
1 Chronicles 22
1 And David said, “This is the house of the Lord God, and this is the altar for the burnt offerings of Israel.” 2 David ordered that the foreigners who were in the land of Israel be gathered together, and he appointed stonemasons to cut dressed stones for the construction of the house of God. 3 David also prepared a large quantity of iron for the nails on the door panels and for the hooks, as well as an incalculable quantity of bronze., 4 and countless cedar logs, for the Sidonians and Tyrians had brought David an abundance of cedar logs. 5 David said, “My son Solomon is young and weak, and the house that will be built for the Lord must be exceedingly magnificent, so that it may be renowned and glorious throughout all the lands; therefore I want to make preparations for it.” And David made many preparations before his death. 6 David called Solomon his son and ordered him to build a house to the Lord, the God of Israel. 7 David said to Solomon, “My son, I had it in my heart to build a house in the name of the Lord my God. 8 But the word of the Lord came to me, saying: You have shed much blood and have waged great wars; you shall not build a house for my name, because you have shed much blood on the earth before me. 9 Behold, a son shall be born to you, who shall be a quiet man; I will give him rest from all his enemies around him, for Solomon shall be his name, and I will give in Israel peace and tranquility throughout his life. 10 He will build a house for my name; he will be my son and I will be his father, and I will establish his royal throne over Israel forever. 11 Now, my son, may the Lord be with you, so that you may prosper and build the house of the Lord your God, according to what he has said about you. 12 Only grant the Lord wisdom and understanding when he gives you authority over Israel, so that you may keep the law of the Lord your God. 13 Then you will prosper if you carefully observe the statutes and ordinances that the Lord commanded Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or discouraged. 14 Behold, by my efforts, I have prepared for the house of the Lord one hundred thousand talents of gold, one million talents of silver, as for the bronze and iron, they cannot be weighed, for there is a quantity of them, I have also prepared wood and stones and you shall add more. 15 You have with you a multitude of workers, stonecutters, craftsmen of stone and wood, and men skilled in every kind of work. 16 Gold, silver, bronze, and iron are countless. Arise. Get to work, and may the Lord be with you.» 17 David commanded all the leaders of Israel to come to the aid of Solomon his son, saying: 18 “Is not the Lord your God with you? Has he not given you rest on every side? For he has delivered the inhabitants of the land into my hands, and the land is subdued before the Lord and before his people.” 19Now, set your heart and soul to seek the Lord your God, and arise and build the sanctuary of the Lord God, so that you may bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord and the holy vessels of God into the house that will be built in the name of the Lord.»
1 Chronicles 23
1 David, old and full of years, established Solomon his son as king over Israel. 2 He gathered all the leaders of Israel, the priests and the Levites. 3 The Levites were counted, from the age of thirty years and above; their number, per head and per man, was thirty-eight thousand. 4 And David said, “Of these, let twenty-four thousand be appointed to the offices of the house of the Lord, let six thousand be scribes and magistrates, 5 four thousand gatekeepers, and four thousand praising the Lord with the instruments I made for praising him.» 6 David divided them into classes, according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 7 Gersonites: Leedan and Semei. 8 The sons of Leedan: the chief Jahiel, Zetham and Joel: three. 9 The sons of Shemei: Salomith, Hoziel and Aran: three. 1 Chronicles 24
1 As for the sons of Aaron, these are their divisions: Sons of Aaron: Nadab, Abiu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 2 Nadab and Abiu died before their father, without having any sons, and Eleazar and Ithamar fulfilled the functions of the priesthood. 3 David, Zadok, of the descendants of Eleazar, and Ahimelech, of the descendants of Ithamar, divided Aaron's sons into classes according to their service. 4 Among the sons of Eleazar there were more leaders than among the sons of Ithamar, and they were divided as follows: for the sons of Eleazar, sixteen heads of families, and for the sons of Ithamar, eight heads of families. 5 They were divided by lot, one after the other, for there were princes of the sanctuary and princes of God among both the sons of Eleazar and the sons of Ithamar. 6 Semeiah, son of Nathanael, the secretary, one of the Levites, registered them before the king and the princes, before Zadok the high priest and Ahimelech, son of Abiathar and before the heads of the priestly and Levitical families, one family being chosen by lot for Eleazar, then one family for Ithamar. 7 The first lot fell to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedei., 8 the third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim, 9 the fifth in Melchia, the sixth in Maïman, 10 the seventh in Accos, the eighth in Abia, 11 the ninth to Jesus, the tenth to Shecheniah, 12 the eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jacim, 13 the thirteenth to Hoppha, the fourteenth to Isbaab, 14 the fifteenth to Belga, the sixteenth to Emmer, 15 the seventeenth at Hezir, the eighteenth at Aphses, 16 the nineteenth in Pheteiah, the twentieth in Hezekiel, 17 the twenty-first to Jachin, the twenty-second to Gamul, 18 the twenty-third to Dalaiau, the twenty-fourth to Mazziaau. 19 These were their divisions according to their service, so that they might come to the house of the Lord, according to the regulations they had received through Aaron their father, as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded him. 20 These are the leaders of the remaining Levites: of the sons of Amram: Subael, of the sons of Subael: Jehediah, 21 of Rohobiah, of the sons of Rohobiah: the chief Jesiah. 22 Of the Isaarites: Salemoth, of the sons of Salemoth: Jahath. 23 Sons of Hebron: Jeriau the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, Jecmaan the fourth. 24 Sons of Oziel: Micha, of the sons of Micha: Samir, 25 Micah's brother: Jesiah, Jesiah's son: Zechariah. 26 Sons of Merari: Moholi and Musi. 27 Son of Merari, by Uzziau his son: Saam, Zechar and Hebri. 28 From Moholi: Eleazar, who had no sons, 29 of Cish, the sons of Cish, Jerahmeel. 30 Musi's sons: Moholi, Eder and Jerimoth. 31 These were the sons of Levi, according to their families. I had it in my heart to build a house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the Lord and for the footstool of our God, and I was making preparations for the construction. 3 But God said to me: You shall not build a house for my name, because you are a man of war and have shed blood. 4 The Lord, the God of Israel, has chosen me from all my father’s house to be king over Israel forever. For he has chosen Judah to be leader, and from the house of Judah he has chosen my father’s house, and from among my father’s sons he has been pleased with me to make me king over all Israel. 5 And among all my sons, for the Lord has given me many sons, he has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingship of the Lord over Israel. 6 He said to me: It is Solomon, your son, who will build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him for my son and I will be a father to him. 7 I will establish his kingship forever, if he remains committed, as he is today, to the practice of my commandments and my ordinances. 8 Now, in the sight of all Israel, of the assembly of the Lord, and before our God who hears us, keep and carefully observe all the commandments of the Lord your God, so that you may possess this good land and pass it on as an inheritance to your children after you forever. 9 And you, Solomon, my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a perfect heart and a devoted soul, for the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan of the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever. 10 See now that the Lord has chosen you to build a house that will be his sanctuary. Be strong and get to work!» 11David gave to Solomon his son the design of the portico and the buildings, treasury chambers, upper chambers, inner chambers attached to it, as well as the mercy seat, 12 the plan of everything he had in mind concerning the courts of the house of the Lord and all the surrounding chambers, for the treasures of the house of God and the treasures of the sanctuary, 13 for the classes of priests and Levites, for all the work of the service of the house of the Lord, and for all the utensils used in the service of the house of the Lord, 14 the model of the gold utensils, with the weight of the gold, for all the utensils of each service, the model of all the silver utensils, with the weight, for all the utensils of each service, 15 the weight of the gold candlesticks and their gold lamps, according to the weight of each candlestick and its lamps, and the weight of the silver candlesticks, according to the weight of each candlestick, 16 the weight of gold for the tables of the showbread, for each table, and the weight of silver for the silver tables, 17 the model of forks, ewers and cups of pure gold, of gold amphorae, with the weight of each amphora, of silver amphorae, with the weight of each amphora, 18 from the altar of incense made of refined gold, according to its weight, the pattern of the chariot of God, golden cherubim spreading their wings and covering the ark of the covenant of the Lord. 19 «All this,» said David, “all the works of this pattern, the Lord instructed me in a writing that came to me from his own hand.” 20 David said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous. Get to work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, will be with you; he will not leave you nor forsake you until all the work for the service of the house of the Lord is finished.” 21 And behold, with you are the divisions of priests and Levites for all the service of the house of God; with you, for every kind of work, are also all the devoted and skilled men, for all the work; finally, the leaders and the people for the execution of all your commands.»
1 Chronicles 29
1 King David said to the whole assembly: “My son Solomon, the only one whom God has chosen, is young and weak, and the work is considerable, for this palace is not for a man, but for the Lord God. 2 I have put all my effort into preparing for the house of my God gold for articles of gold, silver for articles of silver, bronze for articles of bronze, iron for articles of iron, wood for articles of wood, onyx stones and setting stones, ornamental stones and stones of various colors, all kinds of precious stones and marble stones in abundance. 3 Moreover, in my affection for the house of God, the gold and silver that I possess of my own, I give to the house of my God, besides all that I have prepared for the house of the sanctuary: 4 three thousand talents of gold, gold from Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the chambers, 5 Gold for gold objects, silver for silver objects and for all the work of craftsmen. Who today wants to spontaneously fill their hand with offerings for the Lord? 6 The heads of families, the princes of the tribes of Israel, the leaders of thousands and hundreds, as well as the king's stewards, voluntarily made offerings. 7 They gave for the work from the house of God five thousand talents of gold, ten thousand darics, ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen thousand talents of bronze and one hundred thousand talents of iron. 8 Those who possessed precious stones gave them, for the treasury of the house of the Lord, into the hands of Jahiel the Gershonite. 9 The people rejoiced at their freewill offerings, for it was with a perfect heart that they made these freewill offerings to the Lord; King David also had great joy. 10 David blessed the Lord in the sight of all the assembly and David said: "Blessed are you, from eternity to eternity, Lord, God of our father Israel. 11 To you, Lord, belong the greatness, the power, the magnificence, the splendor, and the glory, for all in heaven and on earth belongs to you; to you, Lord, belongs the kingship; to you shall rise supremely above all. 12 From you come wealth and glory, you rule over all, in your hand is strength and power, and to your hand it belongs to give greatness and solidity to all things. 13 Therefore, O our God, we praise you and celebrate your glorious name. 14 For who am I and who are my people, that we should have the power and the strength to make such offerings willingly? Everything comes from you and we give you what we have received from your hand. 15 For we are strangers and colonists before you, as were all our fathers; our days on earth are like a shadow, and there is no hope. 16 Lord, our God, all these riches that we have prepared to build you a house for your holy name, they come from your hand and everything belongs to you. 17 I know, O my God, that you search hearts and that you love righteousness, so I have willingly made all these offerings in the righteousness of my heart and I now see with joy your people who are here willingly making their offerings to you. 18 Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, our fathers, keep this disposition forever as the form of the feelings of the heart of your people and keep their hearts turned towards you. 19 And to my son Solomon, give a perfect heart to observe your commandments, your precepts, and your laws, to put them all into practice, and to build the palace for which I have made preparations.» 20 David said to the whole assembly, “Therefore bless the Lord your God.” And all the assembly blessed the Lord, the God of their fathers; they bowed down and prostrated themselves before the Lord and before the king. 21 The day after that day, they sacrificed victims to the Lord and offered as burnt offerings to the Lord a thousand bulls, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, with their customary drink offerings and other sacrifices in great numbers for all Israel, 22 They ate and drank that day before the Lord with great joy. For the second time, they proclaimed Solomon, son of David, king, and anointed him as ruler before the Lord, and they anointed Zadok as high priest. 23 Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king, in place of David, his father; he prospered and all Israel obeyed him. 24 All the leaders and valiant men, even all the sons of King David, submitted to King Solomon. 25 The Lord raised Solomon to the highest degree in the sight of all Israel, and gave his reign a glory that no king in Israel had ever had before him. 26 David, son of Jesse, reigned over all Israel. 27 The time he reigned over Israel was forty years, he reigned seven years in Hebron and he reigned thirty-three years in Jerusalem. 28 He died in a happy old age, full of days, riches and glory, and Solomon his son reigned in his place. 29 The acts of King David, from first to last, are written in the history of Samuel the seer, in the history of Nathan the prophet, and in the history of Gad the seer., 30 with all his reign and all his exploits and the vicissitudes that befell him, as well as Israel and all the kingdoms of other countries.
Notes on the First Book of Chronicles
The Chronicles contain a number of passages which appear to contradict parallel passages found in other books; we will try to reconcile the most striking ones, referring for all the others to the works of the commentators.
1.1 See Genesis 2, 7; 4, 25; 5, vv. 6, 9. ― Adam, Seth, etc., that is to say Adam begat Seth, Seth begat Enos, and so on down to Noah.
1.1-4 Genealogy of the patriarchs from Adam to Noah and his sons, excluding the descendants of Cain.
1.3 The Chronicles contain proper names which are read differently than in other sacred books. This difference probably comes, in some, from the pronunciation, which has varied, in others, from the error of the copyists, and in still others, from the fact that certain characters and places had different names, or that the meaning of their name could be expressed by several words.
1.4 Noah He fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth, sons of Noah.
1.5-7 Descendants of Japheth, son of Noah.
1.8-16 Descendants of Ham, son of Noah.
1.10 See Genesis 10:8. 1.17 See Genesis 10:22; 11:10.
1.17-27 Descendants of Shem, son of Noah.

In genealogical narratives, this plural is sometimes used for the singular; but as the word son also means child of both sexes, it could be taken here in this latter sense and include Oolibaba, who appears as Ana's daughter in Genesis, 36, 25. 1.44 BosraSee Genesis 36:33.
1.48 on the riverSee Genesis 36, 37. According to some, near the river of the Euphrates. 1.54 From Edom ; the same as Esau.

2.18 Caleb, which is referred to here in verses 19, 24, 42, 46, 48 and 49 is the same as Calubi, from verse 9.
2.21 Father of Gilead. Since Gilead is both a personal name and a place name, and the Hebrew word father also means prince, sovereign, we can translate as sovereign, prince of the land of Gilead, since his posterity had its dwelling there. This double use of proper names in this verse and in several others comes from the fact that the first inhabitants of the Promised Land took the name of the places they inhabited, or from the fact that they called these places from the name they themselves bore, or finally from the fact that their descendants gave to their father the name of the city which was possessed by his posterity.
2.23 the cities under its jurisdiction: sixty cities. It should also be noted that village, town, are sometimes confused in geographical accounts with the word town, which then simply means a collection of houses of varying sizes. Compare to 1 Chronicles 4, 32.

2.46 Haran begat a son, also named Gezez, like his uncle.
2.47 Jahaddaï Not being found in any of the previous genealogies, some confuse it with Mosa from verse 46; others want it to be his son.
2.50-51 This Caleb, son of Hur, is different from the previous one, who had Hezron as his father, and from Caleb, son of Jephone, whose daughter was named Axah (see Joshua, 15, 16). ― Cariathiarim, Bethlehem, Bethgader, Netophatiens are names of cities. 20.2 See, for this verse, 2 Samuel 12, 30. ― Their king. The text written in Hebrew reads: their king, as 2 Samuel 12:30, according to the spelling and vocalization of the Masoretes, but in both passages, one can read, as Saint Jerome did here, Melchom, god of the Ammonites, and it is then easier to understand how an idol could bear a crown weighing a talent, that is, about forty kilograms. David obtained from it enough to make a diadem for himself.

23.6 See 1 Chronicles 6:1. In classes, etc. The descendants of Levi were divided into twenty-four classes or bands, each of which came in turn to the temple to sing the praises of the Lord. Compare to 1 Chronicles 25, 9.
23.13 See 1 Chronicles 6:3; Hebrews 5:4.
23.15 See Exodus 2:22; 18:3-4.
23.16-17 The sons, etc. We have already noted that, in genealogical narratives, the Hebrews and after them the Latins, sometimes used the plural of son for the singular.
23.22 Their brothers ; that's to say their cousins ; Hebraism, of which we have already seen several examples.
23.24 For twenty years and above. Previously (see verse 3), and according to Mosaic law (see Numbers, 4, 3), the Levites were only enrolled at the age of thirty, because the ark and the tabernacle had to be transported from one place to another, their functions and their service were much more arduous.
23.31 According to the number ; hymns they were to sing. This is the explanation of several learned exegetes; but, in our opinion, according to the number refers to the Levites themselves, who were to officiate in the temple according to their number ; That is to say, all of them, without exception. Thus this expression, as well as the following one, continually before the Lord, is grammatically related to that they are ready, from verse 30. Moreover, this kind of construction is entirely in keeping with the genius of the Hebrew language.
23.32 Sons of Aaron ; who were priests. Their brothers ; that is to say, belonging to their tribe.
24.2 See Leviticus 10:2; Numbers 3:4.
24.4 The tribes were divided into families, and the families into houses, which were themselves only particular families, each taking the name of its head (see Joshua, 7, 16, etc.)
24.5 Princes of the sanctuary ; that's to say heads of the sacred service of the sanctuary. ― Princes of God ; can mean very great princes (compare to Genesis, 23, 6), or leaders in all matters concerning God and religion, or finally, chief judges, since the Hebrew Elohim, God, also means judges (compare to 2 Chronicles 19, 11).
24.20 From the rest of the Levites ; that's to say who did not belong to Aaron's family, the only one in charge of priestly functions (see 1 Chronicles 23, 13).
24.31 The oldest ones being on the same footing as the youngest. All, without distinction of condition, age or family, received solely by lot the rank and class assigned to them for their ministry.
25.3 Six. One name is missing to make six. A Hebrew manuscript and the Arabic version bear Semei, which we read in verse 17, both in the Hebrew text and in the Vulgate.
25.5 The king's seer means here musician, singer. ― In the words of God ; that is to say, to sing the words of God, the psalms and the prophecies.
26.5 God blessed Obededom by giving him a very large family (see verse 8), because of the holy ark's stay in his house (see 2 Samuel 6, 11).
26.10 Hosa was descended from Merari. ― Hosa's firstborn was either dead or unable to exercise the rights of primogeniture.
26.13 Spells, etc. Cf. at 1 Chronicles 25, 8.
26.15 The House of Stores. Probably some kind of storehouse for supplies for religious services.
26.16 The historian Josephus (Antiquity., (Book XV, Chapter XIV) speaks of a rise or kind of causeway that led from the king's palace to the temple. One guard was facing the other This likely means that the guard posts were facing each other.
