Luke 1
1 Many have undertaken to write the history of the events that have taken place among us, 2 in accordance with what was handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, 3 I too have resolved, after diligently striving to understand everything precisely from the beginning, to write you a continuous account of it, excellent Théophile, 4 so that you may recognize the certainty of the teachings you have received. 5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah, and his wife, who was one of the daughters of Aaron, was named Elizabeth. 6 Both were righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the Lord’s commandments and ordinances. 7 They had no children because Elizabeth was barren and they were both advanced in years. 8 Now, while Zechariah was fulfilling his priestly duties before God, according to the order of his class, 9 He was chosen by lot, according to the custom observed by the priests, to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and offer incense there. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were outside praying at the hour of incense. 11 But an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was troubled and fear seized him. 13 But the angel said to him, «Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard; your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call him John. 14 He will be a source of joy and gladness for you, and many will rejoice at his birth., 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He will drink neither wine nor anything intoxicating, for he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother's womb. 16 He will convert many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God, 17 And he himself will go before him, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a perfect people.» 18 Zechariah said to the angel, «How can I know that this will be the case? For I am old and my wife is advanced in years.» 19 The angel replied to him: "I am Gabriel, who stands before God, I have been sent to speak to you and announce this happy news to you. 20 And now you will be mute and unable to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.» 21 However, the people were waiting for Zechariah and were surprised that he remained so long in the sanctuary. 22 But having gone outside, he could not speak to them and they understood that he had had a vision in the sanctuary, which he made them understand by signs and he remained mute. 23 When the days of his ministry were completed, he went home. 24 Some time later, Elizabeth, his wife, conceived and she remained hidden for five months, saying: 25 «This is the grace the Lord has shown me, on the day he looked upon me to take away my disgrace among men.» 26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 with a virgin who was betrothed to a man of the house of David, named Joseph, and the virgin's name was Married. 28 The angel entered where she was and said to her, "« Greetings, full of grace, The Lord is with you, You are blessed among women. » 29 Married Having caught sight of him, she was troubled by his words and wondered what this greeting could mean. 30 The angel said to him, «Do not be afraid, Married, because you have found favor with God. 31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. 33 and his reign will have no end.» 34 Married He said to the angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?"« 35 The angel answered her, «The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.”. 36 Your relative Elizabeth also conceived a son in her old age, and this is currently her sixth month, she who is called sterile: 37 For nothing is impossible for God.» 38 Married Then she said, «Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.» And the angel departed from her. 39 In those days, Married Getting up, he went with haste to the land of the mountains, to a city in Judah. 40 And she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 Now, as soon as Elizabeth heard the greeting of Married, The child leaped in her womb, and she was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 And raising her voice, she cried out: "You are blessed among the nations." women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 43 And why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For no sooner had your voice reached my ears when you greeted me than my child in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who believed, for what was spoken to her from the Lord will be fulfilled.» 46 And Married said: «My soul glorifies the Lord. 47 And my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior, 48 because he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Indeed, from now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 because he has done great things in me, he who is mighty and whose name is holy 50 and whose mercy extends from age to age, upon those who fear it. 51 He displayed the strength of his arm; he scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their hearts., 52 He has overthrown the powerful from their thrones and exalted the lowly., 53 He filled the hungry and the rich with good things, and sent them away empty-handed. 54 He has cared for his servant Israel, remembering his mercy, 55 as he had promised to our ancestors, to Abraham and his descendants, forever.» 56 Married stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home. 57 However, the time came when Elizabeth was to give birth, and she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives, having learned that the Lord had shown her mercy, rejoiced with her. 59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child and they named him Zechariah after his father. 60 But his mother spoke up: "No," she said, "but he will be called John."« 61 They told him, "There is no one in your family called by that name."« 62 And they would ask his father by sign what he wanted to be named. 63 Having had a tablet brought to him, he wrote: "John is his name" and everyone was astonished. 64 At that same moment his mouth opened and his tongue was loosened and he spoke, blessing God. 65 Fear gripped all the inhabitants of the surrounding area, and throughout the mountains of Judea, stories of these wonders were being told. 66 All who heard about it pondered these things in their hearts, saying, «What then will this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.» 67 And Zechariah, his father, was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying: 68 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people. 69 And that he has raised up a horn to save us, in the house of David, his servant, 70 As he promised through the mouths of his saints and prophets from ancient times. 71 To save us from our enemies and from the power of all those who hate us. 72 In order to exercise His mercy towards our fathers, and to remember His holy covenant, 73 according to the oath he swore to Abraham, our father, to grant us that, 74 Without fear, freed from the power of our enemies, we served him, 75 with a holiness and justice worthy of his gaze, every day of our lives. 76 As for you, child, you will be called prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, 77 to teach his people to recognize salvation in the remission of their sins: 78 through the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun has visited us from on high, 79 to enlighten those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our steps in the way of peace. » 80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he remained in the wilderness until the day of his appearance before Israel.
Luke 2
1 In those days a decree was issued by Caesar Augustus for a census of all the earth. 2 This first census took place while Quirinius was in command of the Syria. 3 And everyone was going to be counted, each in their own town. 4 Joseph went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, called Bethlehem, because he was of David's house and family, 5 to be counted with Married his wife, who was pregnant. 6 But while they were in that place, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son, wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 In the surrounding area, there were shepherds who spent the night in the fields, watching over their flocks. 9 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the radiance of the glory of the Lord surrounded them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 But the angel said to them, «Do not be afraid, for I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign to you: you will find a newborn baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.» 13At that very moment, a multitude of the heavenly host joined the angel, praising God and saying: 14 «"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will."» 15 When the angels, As they ascended to heaven, having left them, the shepherds said to one another: "Let's go on to Bethlehem Let us consider this event that has occurred and that the Lord has made known to us.» 16 They went there in haste and found Married, Joseph and the newborn baby lying in the manger. 17 After seeing him, they recounted the revelation that had been made to them concerning this Child. 18 And all who heard them were amazed at what the shepherds told them. 19 Gold Married He carefully preserved all these things, pondering them in his heart. 20And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had seen and heard, just as it had been told them. 21 When the eight days were completed, for the circumcision of the Child, he was called Jesus, the name which the angel had given him before he was conceived in the womb. 22 Then, when the days of their purification were completed, according to the law of Moses, Married And Joseph brought the child to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 according to what is written in the law of the Lord: «Every firstborn male shall be consecrated to the Lord,» 24 and to offer as a sacrifice, as prescribed by the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two small pigeons. 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, who was righteous and God-fearing, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not die before seeing the Lord's Christ. 27 So he came into the temple, moved by the Spirit. And as the parents brought in the infant Jesus to observe the legal customs concerning him, 28 He too received him in his arms and blessed God, saying: 29 Now, O Master, you let your servant depart in peace, according to your word, 30 since my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 that you have prepared in the sight of all peoples: 32 light to dispel the darkness of the nations and glory of Israel, your people. 33 The Child's father and mother were in awe of the things that were said about him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Married, his mother: "This Child is in the world for the fall and the resurrection of a large number in Israel and to be a sign subject to contradiction, 35 "A sword will pierce your own soul, and thus the thoughts hidden in the hearts of many will be revealed."» 36 There was also a prophetess, Hannah, daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher; she was very old, having lived seven years with her husband since her virginity. 37 Having remained a widow and reached the age of eighty-four, she did not leave the temple, serving God night and day in fasting and prayer. 38 She too, arriving at that hour, began to praise the Lord and to speak of the Child to all those in Jerusalem who were awaiting redemption. 39 When they had done everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to Nazareth, their own town. 40 However, the child grew and became strong, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him. 41 But his parents went to Jerusalem every year for the Passover festival. 42 When he reached his twelfth year, they went up there, according to the custom of this festival, 43 And when they returned home, the days of the festival having passed, the child Jesus remained in the city, without his parents having noticed. 44 Thinking he was with their traveling companions, they walked all day, then they searched for him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 Not having found him, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and questioning them. 47 And all who heard him were delighted by his intelligence and his answers. 48 When they saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, "My child, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been searching for you anxiously."« 49 And he answered them, «Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?» 50 But they did not understand what he was telling them. 51 So he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them. And his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
Luke 3
1In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, Philip his brother tetrarch of Ituraea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2 In the days of the high priests Annas and Caiaphas, the word of the Lord came to John, son of Zechariah, in the desert. 3 And he went throughout the region of the Jordan, preaching repentance baptism for the forgiveness of sins, 4 as it is written in the book of the oracles of the prophet Isaiah: «A voice heard in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be lowered, the crooked roads shall become straight and the rough ones leveled. 6 And all flesh shall see God's salvation.» 7 He said to those who were flocking to be baptized by him: «Brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore bear worthy fruits of repentance and do not try to say to yourselves: Abraham is our father, for I tell you that from these very stones God can raise up children to Abraham. 9 The axe is already at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.» 10 And the people asked him, "What then must be done?"« 11 He replied, "Whoever has two tunics should give one to the one who has none, and whoever has food should do likewise."« 12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, «Teacher, what should we do?» 13 He told them, "Do not demand anything beyond what you are commanded."« 14 Soldiers also questioned him, saying, "And what should we do?" He replied, "Refrain from all violence and fraud, and be content with your pay."« 15 As the people waited in expectation and all wondered in their hearts, with regard to John, whether he might be the Christ, 16 John said to them all, «I baptize you with water, but one who is more powerful than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His hand holds the winnowing fork, and he will clear his threshing floor, and he will gather the wheat into his barn, and he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.» 18 Through these exhortations and many others like them, he was therefore announcing the good news to the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, his brother's wife, and all the evil he had done, 20 He added this crime to all the others and imprisoned Jean in prison. 21 Now, at the time when all the people had just received baptism, Jesus was also baptized, and while he was praying, the heavens were opened, 22 And the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form, like a dove, and a voice came from heaven, saying, «You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.» 23 Jesus was about thirty years old when he began his ministry; he was, as was believed, the son of Joseph, the son of Heli., 24 son of Matthat, son of Levi, son of Melchi, son of Janneh, son of Joseph, 25 son of Mattathias, son of Amos, son of Nahum, son of Hesli, son of Naggé, 26 son of Maath, son of Mattathias, son of Shemei, son of Josech, son of Judah, 27 son of Joanan, son of Resa, son of Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, son of Neri, 28 son of Melchi, son of Addi, son of Cosam, son of Elmadam, son of Her, 29 son of Jesus, son of Eliezer, son of Jorim, son of Matthat, son of Levi, 30 son of Simeon, son of Judah, son of Joseph, son of Jonan, son of Eliakim, 31 son of Melea, son of Menna, son of Mattatha, son of Nathan, son of David, 32 son of Jesse, son of Obed, son of Boaz, son of Salmon, son of Nahshon, 33 son of Amminadab, son of Aram, son of Hezron, son of Perez, son of Judah, 34 son of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham, son of Terah, son of Nahor, 35 son of Sarug, son of Reu, son of Peleg, son of Eber, son of Salé, 36 son of Cainan, son of Arphaxad, son of Shem, son of Noah, son of Lamech, 37 son of Methuselah, son of Enoch, son of Jared, son of Malaleel, son of Cainan, 38 son of Enos, son of Seth, son of Adam, son of God.
Luke 4
1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert, 2For forty days, he was subjected to the temptations of the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over, he was hungry. 3 Then the devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."« 4 Jesus answered him, «It is written: »Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word of God.’” 5 And the devil, having taken him to a high mountain, showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the earth, 6 and said to him, «I will give you all this power and all the glory of these kingdoms, for it has been delivered to me and I give it to whomever I want. 7 »If you bow down before me, she will be entirely yours.” 8 Jesus answered him, «It is written: »You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” 9 The demon led him back to Jerusalem and, having placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, said to him, «If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here.” 10 For it is written: His angels have been commanded concerning you to guard you 11 and they will take you into their hands, lest your foot strike against the stone.» 12 Jesus answered him, «It is written: »You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 After tempting him in every way, the devil withdrew from him for a time. 14 Then Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and his fame spread throughout the surrounding countryside. 15 He taught in their synagogues and they all praised him. 16 Having come to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day, according to his custom, and stood up to read. 17 He was given the book of the prophet Isaiah And having unrolled it, he found the place where it was written: 18 «The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, and he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted.”, 19 to proclaim freedom for the captives and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.» 20 Having rolled up the book, he returned it to the attendant and sat down, and all in the synagogue had their eyes fixed on him. 21 Then he began to tell them, «Today your ears have heard the fulfillment of this passage of Scripture.» 22 And all bore witness to him, and marveling at the gracious words that came from his mouth, they said, «Is this not the son of Joseph?» 23 And he said to them, «No doubt you will cite to me this adage: Physician, heal thyself, and you will tell me: The great things we have heard you did in Capernaum, do them here in your homeland.» 24 And he added: «Truly I tell you, no prophet is well received in his homeland. 25 Truly I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up for three and a half years, and there was a great famine throughout the land, 26 And yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath, in the land of Sidon. 27 Likewise, there were many lepers in Israel in the days of the prophet Elisha, and yet none of them were healed, but Naaman the Syrian was.» 28 When they heard this, they were all filled with anger in the synagogue. 29 And getting up, they drove him out of the city and led him to a craggy edge of the mountain on which their city was built, to throw him down. 30 But he, passing through the midst of them, went away. 31 He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and there he taught them on the Sabbath days. 32 And his doctrine astonished them, because he spoke with authority. 33 There was a man in the synagogue possessed by an unclean demon, who cried out loudly, 34 saying, «Leave me alone, what do we have to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God.» 35 But Jesus said sternly to him, «Be quiet and come out of him.» And the demon threw him to the ground in the midst of the assembly and came out of him without harming him. 36 And they were all amazed and said to one another, «What is this saying? With authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.» 37 And his fame spread throughout the country. 38 Then Jesus got up, left the synagogue, and went into Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they prayed to him for her. 39 Bending over the sick woman, he commanded the fever and the fever left her and, having risen at once, she began to serve them. 40 When the sun had set, all those who had sick people in their homes, whatever their illness, brought them to him, and Jesus laid his hand on each one of them and healed them. 41 Demons also came out of many, shouting and saying, "You are the Son of God," and he rebuked them to silence, because they knew that he was the Christ. 42 As soon as day broke, he went out and left for a deserted place. A crowd of people went looking for him, and when they came to him, they wanted to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said to them, «I must proclaim the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is what I was sent for.» 44 And Jesus preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
Luke 5
1 Now, one day, pressed by the crowd who wanted to hear the word of God, he was standing on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, 2 He saw two boats moored near the shore; the fishermen had gone ashore to wash their nets. 3 So he got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the shore, and then, sitting down, he taught the people from the boat. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, «Put out into the deep sea and let down your nets for a catch.» 5 Simon answered him, «Master, we have worked all night and caught nothing, but because you say so, I will let down the nets.» 6 Having cast it, they caught such a large quantity of fish that their net began to break. 7 And they signaled to their companions, who were in the other boat, to come to their aid. They came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' feet, saying, "Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinner."« 9 For terror had seized him and all those who accompanied him because of the catch of fish they had made, 10 The same was true of James and John, sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid, for from now on you will be catching men."« 11 Immediately, bringing their boats back to shore, they left everything and followed him. 12 While he was in a town, a man covered with leprosy saw Jesus and fell with his face to the ground and begged him, «Lord, if you are willing, you can make me well.» 13 Jesus, stretching out his hand, touched him and said to him, "I will it, be healed," and at once his leprosy disappeared. 14 And he forbade him to speak of it to anyone, but said: «Go,» he said, “show yourself to the priest and offer for your healing what Moses prescribed, to testify to it before the people.” 15 His fame spread more and more, and large crowds came to hear him and to be cured of their illnesses. 16 For him, it was a matter of retreating to the deserts and praying. 17 One day while he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the Law from all the villages of Galilee, as well as from Judea and Jerusalem, were sitting around him, and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. 18 And then some people, carrying a paralyzed man on a bed, were trying to bring him in and place him in front of him. 19 And not finding a way because of the crowd, they went up onto the roof and, through the tiles, lowered the sick man with his stretcher into the midst of everyone, in front of Jesus. 20 Seeing their faith, he said, «Man, your sins are forgiven.» 21 Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason and say, «Who is this who utters blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?» 22 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, spoke to them and said, «What are you thinking in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say: Your sins are forgiven, or to say: Get up and walk? 24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins—he said to the paralytic, »I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 25 At that moment, he got up in front of them, took the bed on which he had been lying, and went home, glorifying God. 26 And they were all amazed; they glorified God and, filled with awe, said, «We have seen wonderful things today.» 27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax collector’s booth, and said to him, «Follow me.» 28 And he left everything, got up, and followed him. 29 Levi gave him a great feast in his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were at table with them. 30 The Pharisees and their scribes murmured and said to his disciples, «Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and the fishermen ? » 31 Jesus answered them, «It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous to repentance, but the fishermen. » 33 Then they said to him, «Why is it that the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast and pray often, but yours eat and drink?» 34 He answered them, «Can you make the friends of the Bridegroom fast while the Bridegroom is with them?” 35 The days will come when the Bridegroom will be taken away from them, and they will fast on those days.» 36 He offered them this further comparison: "No one puts a piece taken from a new garment onto an old garment: otherwise the new garment is torn and the piece from the new garment does not fit the old garment well. 37 No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and spill out, and the skins will be ruined. 38 But the new wine must be put into new wineskins and both will keep. 39 And no one, after drinking old wine, immediately wants new wine, because it is said: 'Old wine is better.'»
Luke 6
1 One Sabbath day, as Jesus was passing through fields of wheat, his disciples picked ears of grain and, crushing them in their hands, ate them. 2 Some Pharisees said to them, «Why are you doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath day?» 3 Jesus answered them, «Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 How did he enter the house of God and take the consecrated bread, eat it, and give it to those who were with him, even though it was only permitted for the priests to eat it?» 5 And he added, «The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.» 6 Another Sabbath, Jesus entered the synagogue and was teaching. And a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7 Now the Scribes and Pharisees were watching him closely to see if he was performing healings on the Sabbath day, so that they might have a pretext to accuse him. 8 But he, perceiving their thoughts, said to the man with the withered hand, «Get up and stand in the middle,» and he got up and stood. 9 Then Jesus said to them, «I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to take it away?» 10 Then, looking around at them all, he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was healed. 11 But they, filled with fury, were plotting what to do to Jesus. 12 In those days, he withdrew to the mountain to pray and spent the whole night praying to God. 13 When day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he named apostles: 14 Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, 15 Matthew and Thomas, James, son of Alphaeus, and Simon, called the Zealot, 16 Jude, brother of James and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. 17 Having gone down with them, he stopped on a plateau, where there was a crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, from Jerusalem and from all the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon. 18 They had come to hear him and to be healed of their illnesses. Those who were tormented by unclean spirits were healed. 19 And all these people sought to touch him, because a virtue emanated from him that healed them all. 20 Then, looking up at his disciples, he said to them, «Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of heaven. 21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed are you when people hate you, exclude you from their company, heap reproach upon you, and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven: for thus did their fathers treat the prophets. 24 But woe to you!, You are rich, for you have your consolation. 25 Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. 27 But I tell you who are listening: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you. 28 Bless those who curse you and pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also, and if someone takes your coat from you, do not prevent him from taking your tunic as well. 30 Give to anyone who asks you, and if your property is taken from you, do not demand it back. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. 32 If you love those who love you, what recognition will you receive in return? The fishermen They love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what recognition will you receive? The fishermen They do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 As for you, love your enemies, do good and lend without expecting anything in return and your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, who is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. 36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. 37 Do not judge and you will not be judged, do not condemn and you will not be condemned, forgive and it will be forgiven you. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.» 39 He made this comparison to them: «Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into the pit?” 40 The disciple is not above the master, but every disciple, when his instruction is complete, will be like his master. 41 Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and do not notice the plank in your own eye? 42 Or how can you say to your brother, «Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,” when you yourself do not see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. 43 Indeed, there is no good tree that bears bad fruit, nor a bad tree that bears good fruit., 44 Each tree is recognized by its fruit. You don't pick figs from thorns, you don't cut grapes from brambles. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil treasure of his heart, for the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. 46 Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say? 47 Everyone who comes to me and listens to my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what he is like. 48 It is like a man who, building a house, dug deep beforehand and laid its foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent crashed against that house and could not shake it, because it had its foundation on rock. 49 But the one who listens and does not put into practice is like a man who built his house on the ground without a foundation; the torrent came and struck it, and immediately it collapsed, and great was the ruin of that house.»
Luke 7
1 After he had finished saying all his words to the people, Jesus entered Capernaum. 2 Now, a centurion had a sick servant who was going to die, and he loved him very much. 3 Having heard about Jesus, he sent Jewish leaders to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4 When they came to Jesus, they begged him earnestly, saying, «He deserves that you do this for him, 5 "Because he loves our nation and he even built our synagogue."» 6 So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent some of his friends to say to him, «Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, 7 Therefore I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you, but say the word and my servant shall be healed. 8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes; and that one, 'Do this,' and he does it.» 9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at the man and, turning to the crowd following him, said, «Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.» 10 Upon their return to the centurion's house, the messengers found the servant who had been ill healed. 11 Some time later, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and many disciples and a large crowd went with him. 12 As he approached the city gate, he found that a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and many people from the city were accompanying her. 13 When the Lord saw her, he was moved with compassion for her and said to her, «Do not weep.» 14 And approaching, he touched the coffin, the pallbearers having stopped, then he said: "Young man, I command you, get up."« 15 Immediately the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. 16 They were all filled with awe and they glorified God, saying, «A great prophet has appeared among us, and God has visited his people.» 17 And this word spoken about him spread throughout all Judea and all the surrounding country. 18 John's disciples having reported all these things to him, 19 He called two of them and sent them to Jesus to say, «Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?» 20 So they came to him and said, «John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, »Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’” 21 At that very moment, Jesus healed a great number of people afflicted by illness, infirmity, or evil spirits, and gave sight to several blind people. 22 Then he answered the messengers, «Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor are evangelized. 23 Blessed is the one who is not offended by me.» 24 When John's messengers had left, Jesus began to speak to the people about John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 What did you go out into the desert to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? But those who wear fine clothes and live in luxury are in royal palaces. 26 So what did you go to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 It is of him that it is written: I am sending my messenger before your face, to go before you and prepare the way for you. 28 For I tell you, among those born of women there is no prophet greater than John the Baptist, but the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. 29 All the people who heard him, including the tax collectors, justified God by being baptized with the baptism of John., 30 while the Pharisees and the teachers of the law rejected God's plan for them by not being baptized by him.» 31 «To whom then,” the Lord continued, “shall I compare the men of this generation? To whom are they like?” 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace, calling out to one another and saying: We played the flute for you and you did not dance, we sang dirges for you and you did not cry. 33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.'. 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.'. 35 But Wisdom has been vindicated by all her children.» 36 A Pharisee having asked Jesus to eat with him, he went into his house and sat down at the table. 37 And behold, a woman who was leading a dissolute life in the city, having learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster jar full of perfume, 38 And standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to sprinkle them with her tears and to wipe them with the hair of her head, and she kissed them and anointed them with perfume. 39 At this sight, the Pharisee who had invited him said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him, and that she is a sinner."« 40 Then Jesus spoke up and said to him, «Simon, I have something to tell you.» «Teacher, speak,» he said. 41 A creditor had two debtors, one owed five hundred denarii and the other fifty. 42 Since they had no way to pay their debt, he forgave them both. Which of them will love him more?» 43 Simon replied, "I suppose the one to whom he forgave the larger sum." Jesus said to him, "You have judged correctly."« 44 And turning to the woman, he said to Simon, «Do you see this woman? I entered your house, and you did not pour water on my feet, but she has wet them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You didn't give me a kiss, but she, ever since I came in, has kept kissing my feet. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she anointed my feet with perfume. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven her, because she loved much; but he who is forgiven little loves little.» 48 Then he said to the woman, "Your sins are forgiven."« 49 And those who were at the table with him began to say to themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?"« 50 But Jesus said to the woman, «Your faith has saved you; go in peace.»
Luke 8
1 Then Jesus traveled through the towns and villages, preaching and announcing the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, 2 as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Married, known as Magdala, from which seven demons had emerged, 3 Joanna, wife of Chusa, Herod's steward, Susanna, and several others, who supported him from their resources. 4 A large crowd having gathered, and people having come to him from various towns, Jesus said in a parable: 5 «"The sower went out to sow, and as he was sowing, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air ate it up. 6 Another part fell onto the stone and, as soon as it was lifted, it dried, because it had no moisture. 7 Another part fell among the thorns, and the thorns, growing with it, suffocated it. 8 Another part fell on good soil, and when it sprouted, it produced a hundredfold.» Speaking these words, he said aloud, «He who has ears to hear, let him hear.» 9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant: 10 «To you,” he said, “the knowledge of the mystery of the kingdom of God has been given, while to others it is proclaimed in parables, so that by seeing they do not see and by hearing they do not understand. 11 This is what this parable means: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those along the way are the ones who hear the word, but then the devil comes and takes it away from their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13 Those in whom the seed was sown on the rock are those who, hearing the word, receive it with joy, but they have no root: they believe for a while and in the hour of testing fall away. 14 What fell on the thorns represents those who, having heard the word, gradually allow themselves to be suffocated by the worries, riches and pleasures of life and they do not reach maturity. 15 Finally, what fell on good soil represents those who, having heard the word with a good and excellent heart, keep it and bear fruit by perseverance. 16 No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be discovered, nothing secret that will not eventually be known and come to light. 18 Therefore, be careful how you listen, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away.» 19 Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they could not get in because of the crowd. 20 They came and told him, "Your mother and brothers are outside and they want to see you."« 21 He replied, "My mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and put it into practice."« 22 One day, Jesus got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, "Let's cross to the other side of the lake." And they set out to sea. 23 While they were sailing, he fell asleep and a whirlwind of wind having struck the lake, their boat filled with water and they were in peril. 24 So they approached him and woke him, saying, «Master, Master, we are perishing!» He got up and rebuked the wind and the agitated waves, and they calmed down and there was peace. 25 Then he said to them, «Where is your faith?» They were filled with fear and amazement, saying to one another, «Who then is this, that he commands the wind and the sea, and they obey him?» 26 They then landed in the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, a man from the town who had long been possessed by demons came to meet him; he wore no clothes and had no other dwelling than the tombs. 28 As soon as he saw Jesus, he cried out and came to his feet, saying in a loud voice, «What do you have to do with me, Jesus, Son of God, Most High? Please, do not torment me.» 29 Indeed, Jesus commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times the spirit had seized him, and although he was kept bound with chains and shackles on his feet, he would break his bonds and the demon would drive him out into deserted places. 30 Jesus asked him, «What is your name?» He said to him, «My name is Legion,» because many demons had entered him. 31 And these demons begged Jesus not to command them to go into the abyss. 32 Now, there was a large herd of pigs grazing on the mountain, and they begged him to allow them to enter, and he allowed them. 33 So, coming out of the man they went into the pigs and the herd, taking its run, rushed down the steep slopes into the lake and drowned there. 34 At this sight, the guards fled and carried the news throughout the town and countryside. 35 The people went out to see what had happened: they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at his feet, clothed and sane in spirit, and they were filled with fear. 36 Those who had witnessed it also told them how the demoniac had been delivered. 37 Then all the inhabitants of the country of the Gerasenes begged him to leave them, because they were filled with great fear. So Jesus got into the boat to return. 38 Now the man from whom the demons had gone out begged him to admit him to his side, but Jesus sent him away, saying: 39 «Go back home and tell everyone how much God has done for you.» So he went away and told all over town what Jesus had done for him. 40 When Jesus returned, he was welcomed by the people, for they were all waiting for him. 41 And behold, a man named Jairus, who was a leader of the synagogue, came and fell at Jesus' feet, begging him to come into his house, 42 because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, who was dying. 43 As Jesus was walking there and was pressed by the crowd, a woman who had suffered from a flow of blood for twelve years and who had spent all her money on doctors, without any being able to cure her, 44 She approached him from behind and touched the fringe of his coat. Instantly, his bleeding stopped. 45 And Jesus said, «Who touched me?» They all denied it, but Peter and those with him said, «Master, the crowd is surrounding you and pressing against you, and you are asking, »Who touched me?’” 46 But Jesus said, "Someone touched me, for I felt power go out from me."« 47 Seeing herself discovered, the woman came trembling and threw herself at his feet and told everyone why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 And Jesus said to her, «Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace.» 49 While he was still speaking, someone from the synagogue leader's household came to him and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher."« 50 When Jesus heard this, he replied to the father, «Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be saved.» 51 When he arrived home, he let no one in with him except Peter, James and John, with the child's father and mother. 52 But everyone was weeping and mourning for her, and Jesus said, «Do not weep, she is not dead, but asleep.» 53 And they mocked him, knowing full well that she was dead. 54 But he, taking her by the hand, said aloud, "Child, get up."« 55 And her spirit returned to her and she got up at once, and Jesus ordered that she be given something to eat. 56 His parents were overjoyed, but he advised them not to tell anyone what had happened.
Luke 9
1 Having gathered the Twelve together, Jesus gave them power and authority over all demons and the power to heal diseases. 2 And he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick, 3 and he said to them, «Take nothing for the journey, neither staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money, and do not have two tunics. 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that place. 5 If they refuse to receive you, leave that city and shake the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.» 6 The disciples went from village to village, preaching the Gospel and performing healings everywhere. 7 However, Herod the tetrarch heard about all that Jesus was doing, and he did not know what to think, for some were saying, "John has risen from the dead,", 8 Others say, "Elijah has appeared," others say, "One of the ancient prophets has risen from the dead."« 9 Herod said, "As for John, I had him beheaded. Who then is this man about whom I hear such things?" And he sought to see him. 10 The apostles returned and told Jesus everything they had done. He took them with him and withdrew by himself to a solitary place near a town called Bethsaida. 11 When the people heard about it, they followed him. Jesus welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and he healed those who were sick. 12 As the day was drawing to a close, the Twelve came to him and said, «Send the people away so that they may spread out into the surrounding villages and hamlets and find shelter and food, for we are here in a desolate place.» 13 He replied, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "We only have five loaves of bread and two fish, unless perhaps we ourselves go and buy enough to feed all these people."« 14 For there were about five thousand men. Jesus said to his disciples, «Have them sit down in groups of fifty.» 15 They obeyed him and made them sit down. 16 Then Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to serve the people. 17 They all ate and were satisfied, and of the leftover pieces, they took away twelve baskets. 18 One day, while he was praying in a solitary place, with his disciples with him, he asked them this question: "Who do the crowds say I am?"« 19 They replied: "John the Baptist, others Elijah, others that one of the ancient prophets has risen again. 20 »And you,« he asked them, »who do you say I am?” Peter replied, “The Christ of God.” 21 But he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone. 22 «It is necessary,» he added, “that the Son of Man suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the scribes, and that he be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” 23 Then, addressing everyone, he said: «If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will save it. 25 What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and yet forfeit himself? 26 And if anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.» 28 About eight days after he said these words, Jesus took with him Peter, James and John and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 While he was praying, the appearance of his face changed and his clothes became dazzlingly white. 30 And then two men were talking with him: they were Moses and Elijah., 31 Appearing in glory, they discussed his death, which was to take place in Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were overcome with sleep, but having stayed awake, they saw the glory of Jesus and the two men who were with him. 33 As they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, «Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.» He did not know what he was saying. 34 As he spoke these words, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and the disciples were terrified as they entered the cloud. 35 And a voice came from the cloud, saying, «This is my beloved Son; listen to him.» 36 While the voice was speaking, Jesus was alone. The disciples remained silent and told no one at that time what they had seen. 37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd came to meet Jesus. 38 And a man cried out from the midst of the crowd, "Master, I beg you, take a look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and immediately he cries out, the spirit violently agitates him, making him foam at the mouth, and scarcely leaves him after having bruised him all over. 40 I asked your disciples to drive him out, but they could not. 41 »O unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long will I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” 42 And as the child approached, the demon threw him to the ground and shook him violently. 43 But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the child, and gave him back to his father. 44 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. While everyone was marveling at what Jesus was doing, he said to his disciples, «Listen carefully to this: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.» 45 But they did not understand this saying; it was veiled to them, so that they did not have the understanding and they were afraid to question him about it. 46 Then a thought crept into their minds: which of them was the greatest. 47 Jesus, seeing the thoughts of their hearts, took a little child and laid him by his side., 48 And he said to them, «Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For the one among you who is least is the one who is great.» 49 John, speaking up, said: «Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he was not one of us.» 50 »Do not stop him,” Jesus replied, “for whoever is not against you is for you.” 51 When the days of his being taken from the world were near, he resolved to go to Jerusalem. 52 He sent messengers ahead of him, who set out and entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his arrival., 53 But the inhabitants refused to receive him, because he was heading towards Jerusalem. 54 When his disciples James and John saw this, they said, «Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?» 55 Jesus turned and rebuked them, saying, «You do not know what kind of spirit you are.» 56 The Son of Man did not come to destroy lives, but to save them.» And they went to another village. 57 While they were on their way, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."« 58 Jesus answered him, «Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.» 59 He said to another, "Follow me." The man replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."« 60 But Jesus said to him, «Let the dead bury their own dead, but go and proclaim the kingdom of God.» 61 Another said to him, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me go and say goodbye to those of my household."« 62 Jesus answered him, «No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.»
Luke 10
1After that, the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into all the cities and places where he himself was to go. 2 He told them:« The harvest is plentiful, but there are few workers. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3 Go: behold, I am sending you out like lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals, and greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, "Peace to this house."« 6 And if there is a child of peace there, your peace will rest upon him; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they have, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move from one house to another. 8 In whatever town you enter, if you are welcomed, eat what is offered to you., 9 heal the sick who are there, and tell them: The kingdom of God is near to you. 10 But in whatever town you enter, if they do not welcome you, go out into the public squares and say: 11 Even the dust of your city, which has clung to us, we wipe away against you; yet know this, that the kingdom of God is near. 12 I tell you, on that day there will be less severity for Sodom than for this city. 13 Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if miracles who were made in your midst, had been made in Tyre and Sidon, they would have long ago done penance, sitting under hair shirts and ashes. 14 That is why, at the judgment, there will be less severity for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, who exalt yourself to heaven, you will be brought down to hell. 16 »Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever despises you despises me; and whoever despises me despises the one who sent me.” 17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name."« 18 He replied to them, "I saw Satan falling from the sky like lightning. 19 Behold, I have given you the power to trample on serpents and scorpions and all the power of the enemy, and it shall not be able to harm you in any way. 20 »Do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” 21 At that same time, he leaped for joy through the Holy Spirit and said: «I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to little children. Yes, I praise you, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.”. 22 »All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows what the Son is except the Father, and what the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” 23 And turning to his disciples, he said to them privately, «Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24 For I tell you, many prophets and kings longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.» 25 And behold, a lawyer stood up and asked him to test him, «Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?» 26 Jesus said to him, «What is written in the Law? How do you read it?» 27 He replied, «You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.» 28 Jesus said to him, «You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.» 29 But this man, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"« 30 Jesus continued: «A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him and beat him severely, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now, it happened that a priest was coming down the same path, he saw this man and passed by. 32 Likewise, a Levite, having come to that place, approached, saw him, and passed on by. 33 But a Samaritan, who was traveling, came near him and, seeing him, was moved with compassion. 34 He approached, bandaged his wounds, after pouring oil and wine on them, then he put him on his own mount, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day, taking out two denarii, he gave them to the innkeeper and said to him: Take care of this man and whatever more you spend, I will repay you on my return. 36 Which of these three do you think was the next man to fall into the hands of the robbers? 37 The doctor replied, "The one who practiced mercy to him.» And Jesus said to him, «You also go and do likewise.» 38 While they were on their way, Jesus entered a village and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 She had a sister, named Married, who, having seat at the Lord's feet, listening to his word, 40 While Martha was busy with the various tasks of serving, she stopped and said, «Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do the work alone? Tell her to help me.» 41 The Lord answered her, «Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things. 42 Only one is needed. Married He chose the better part, which will not be taken away from him.»
Luke 11
1 One day, while Jesus was praying in a certain place, when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, «Lord, teach us to pray, "as John taught his disciples."» 2 He told them, «When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. 3 Give us this day the bread we need to sustain ourselves, 4 "Forgive us our trespasses, for we ourselves forgive everyone who trespasses against us, and lead us not into temptation."» 5 He also said to them, «If one of you has a friend and goes to him at midnight, saying, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,’, 6 because a friend of mine who is traveling has arrived at my house and I have nothing to offer him., 7 and that from inside the house, the other replies: Don't bother me, the door is already closed, my children and I are in bed, I can't get up to give you some: 8 I tell you, even if he would not get up to give him anything because he is his friend, he will get up because of his shamelessness and give him as much bread as he needs. 9 And I tell you: Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you shall find, Knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11 Which of you fathers, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or, if he asks her for an egg, will he give her a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!» 14 Jesus was casting out a demon, and this demon was mute. When the demon was expelled, the mute man spoke, and the people were amazed. 15 But some of them said, "It is by Beelzebul, prince of demons, that he drives out demons."« 16 Others, to test him, asked him for a sign in the sky. 17 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, «Every kingdom divided against itself will be destroyed, and houses will fall one upon another. 18 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I drive out demons. 19 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20 But if it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons, The kingdom of God has therefore come to you. 21 When a strong and well-armed man guards the entrance to his house, what he owns is safe. 22 But if someone stronger comes along and defeats him, he takes away all the weapons in which he trusted and divides his spoils. 23 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. 24 When an unclean spirit leaves a man, it goes through arid places, seeking rest. Not finding any, it says, “I will return to my house from which I came.”. 25 And when he arrives, he finds it cleaned and decorated. 26 Then he goes away, taking with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they go in and dwell there. And the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.» 27 As he was speaking, a woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that you suckled."« 28 Jesus replied, «Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it.» 29 As the people gathered in crowds, he began to say:« This generation is a wicked generation, She asks for a sign, and she will receive no other sign than that of the prophet Jonah. 30 For just as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so the Son of Man will be a sign to this generation. 31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon: and there is something greater than Solomon here. 32 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and something greater than Jonah is here. 33 No one lights a lamp and puts it in a hidden place or under a basket, but on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light; if it is unhealthy, your body will be full of darkness. 35 Therefore, beware lest the light that is in you become darkness. 36 »If your whole body is in the light, without any mixing of darkness, it will be fully illuminated, as when the light of a lamp shines upon you.” 37 While he was speaking, a Pharisee invited him to dinner at his house, and Jesus went in and sat down at the table. 38 But the Pharisee was astonished to see that he had not performed ablution before dinner. 39 The Lord said to him, «Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you all is full of greed and iniquity. 40 Fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? 41 However, give alms according to your means and everything will be pure for you. 42 But woe to you!, Pharisees, who tithe mint, rue, and every kind of garden plant, and have no concern for justice or the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 43 Woe to you, Pharisees, who love the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 Woe to you, for you are like unseen tombs, and people walk over them without knowing it.» 45 Then a lawyer spoke up and said to him, "Teacher, by speaking in this way you insult us also."« 46 Jesus replied, «Woe to you also, teachers of the law! Because you load people down with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not lift a finger to help them.”. 47 Woe to you, who build tombs for the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them. 48 So you are witnesses and you applaud the works of your fathers, for they killed them and you build tombs for them. 49 That is why the Wisdom of God said: I will send them prophets and apostles, they will kill some of them and persecute others: 50 so that this generation may be held accountable for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the creation of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held accountable for it. 52 »Woe to you, experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge; you yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.” 53 As Jesus was saying these things to them, the Pharisees and the scribes began to press him sharply and to overwhelm him with questions, 54setting traps for him and seeking to catch him in a word to accuse him.
Luke 12
1 Meanwhile, when thousands of people had gathered, to the point of trampling one another, Jesus began to say to his disciples: «Beware above all of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 There is nothing hidden that should not be revealed, nothing secret that should not be known. 3 Therefore, everything you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear inside the house will be proclaimed from the housetops. 4 But I tell you, my friends: Do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5 I will teach you whom you should fear: fear him who, after killing, has the power to throw into hell; yes, I tell you, fear him. 6 Are not five sparrows worth two aces? And not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 But even the hairs on your head are all numbered.. So do not be afraid: you are worth more than many sparrows. 8 I tell you again, whoever confesses me before men, the Son of Man will also confess him before the angels of God, 9 But whoever denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. 10 And whoever speaks against the Son of Man will obtain forgiveness, but for the one who has blasphemed against the Holy Spirit, there will be no forgiveness. 11 When you are brought before the synagogues, the magistrates, and the authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say., 12For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what you ought to say.» 13 Then someone from the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."« 14 Jesus answered him, «Man, who appointed me to be a judge or to divide your property?» 15 And he said to the people, «Be on your guard against all kinds of greed, for even in abundance, a person’s life does not consist in the wealth they possess.» 16 Then he told them this parable: «There was a rich man whose land produced an abundant harvest. 17 And he was discussing these thoughts to himself: What shall I do? For I have no place to store my harvest. 18 “This is what I will do,” he said. “I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my harvests and possessions.”. 19 And I will say to my soul: My soul, you have great riches laid up for many years; take rest, eat, drink, and be merry. 20 But God said to him, “You fool!”, This very night, they will ask for your soul and what you have stored away., For whom will it be? 21 So it is with the man who stores up treasures for himself and is not rich before God.» 22 Then Jesus said to his disciples, «Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 Life is more than food and the body is more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than these birds? 25 Which of you, through constant worrying, could add an arm to the length of your life? 26 If even the smallest things are beyond your power, why worry about others? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither labor nor spin; and I tell you, Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass, which is today in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, you of little faith. 29 You too, don't worry about what you'll eat or drink and don't be anxious. 30 For it is the people of this world who are concerned about these things, but your Father knows that you need them. 31But seek first the kingdom of God, and all these things will be given to you as well. 32 Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is more pleasing to your Father to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell what you have and give alms. Make for yourselves purses that time does not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where thieves do not enter and moths do not destroy. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 35 Keep your belt tight around your waist and your lights on. 36 Be like men who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that as soon as he arrives and knocks at the door, they may open it for him at once. 37 Blessed are those servants whom the master, upon his return, will find watchful. I tell you truly, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table, and will come and wait on them. 38 Whether he arrives at the second watch, or at the third, if he finds them thus, blessed are those servants. 39 But you should know that if the father of the family knew what time the thief was coming, he would be vigilant and would not let his house be broken into. 40 You too must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect.» 41 Then Peter said to him, «Are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?» 42 The Lord replied, «Who is the faithful and wise manager whom the master will put in charge of his servants, to distribute the measure of wheat at the proper time?” 43 Blessed is that servant whom the master finds so doing when he comes. 44 I tell you truly, he will establish it over all his possessions. 45 But if that servant says to himself, 'My master is taking a long time to come,' and begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will have him torn with blows and assign him a place with the unbelievers. 47 That servant who knew his master's will and did not prepare anything or act according to his will will receive many blows. 48 But he who has not known it and has done things deserving of punishment will receive few blows. Much will be demanded of him to whom much has been given, and the more one has entrusted to someone, the more we ask of him. 49 I have come to cast fire upon the earth, and how I desire that it already be kindled. 50 I still have to be baptized, and what anguish I feel until it is accomplished. 51 Do you think I came to establish peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather the division. 52 For now, if there are five people in one house, they will be divided, three against two and two against three, 53 The father will be divided against his son and the son against his father, the mother against her daughter and the daughter against her mother, the mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.» 54 He also told the people: "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say: Rain is coming, and so it happens. 55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say: It will be hot, and it is. 56 Hypocrites, you know how to recognize the aspects of the sky and the earth, How is it that you do not recognize the time in which we live? ? 57 And how is it that you do not discern for yourselves what is right? 58 Indeed, when you go with your adversary before the magistrate, try to extricate yourself from his pursuit on the way, lest he drag you before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59 I'm telling you, you won't get out of here until you've paid every last penny.»
Luke 13
1 At that time some people came and told Jesus what had happened to the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mixed with that of their sacrifices. 2 He answered them, «Do you think that these Galileans were greater sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? 3 No, I tell you, but if you do not repent, You will all perish like them. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower of Siloam fell and whom it killed, do you think their debt was greater than that of all the other inhabitants of Jerusalem? 5No, I tell you, but if you do not repent, you will all perish in the same way. » 6 He also told this parable: «A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard. He went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any, 7 He said to the winegrower: For three years I have been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and I find none, cut it down then: why does it make the land unproductive? 8 The vinedresser replied, "Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I have dug up and put manure all around it.". 9 Perhaps it will bear fruit later; if not, you can cut it down.» 10 Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath. 11 Now, there was a woman there who had been possessed for eighteen years by a spirit that made her infirm: she was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her and said, «Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.» 13 And he laid his hands on her, and immediately she sat up and glorified God. 14 But the synagogue leader, indignant that Jesus had performed this healing on the Sabbath, spoke up and said to the people, «There are six days for work, so come and be healed on those days and not on the Sabbath day. 15 "Hypocrite," the Lord replied, "doesn't each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from its stall and lead it out to water?" 16 And this daughter of Abraham, that Satan had kept bound for eighteen years, She should not have been released from this chain on the Sabbath day.. » 17 While he was speaking, all his opponents were covered in confusion, and all the people were delighted by all the wonderful things he was accomplishing. 18 He also said, «What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden; it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made their homes in its branches.» 20 He also said, «To what shall I compare the kingdom of God?” 21 It is like the leaven that a woman takes and mixes with three measures of flour, so that the whole dough rises.» 22 So he went through the towns and villages, teaching and making his way towards Jerusalem. 23 Someone asked him, "Lord, will only a few be saved?" He told them: 24 «Strive to enter through the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able.”. 25 Once the head of the household has gotten up and closed the door, if you are outside and start knocking, saying: Lord, open the door for us. He will answer you: I don't know where you are from. 26 Then you will begin to say: We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our public squares. 27And he will answer you: I tell you, I do not know where you come from; depart from me, all you workers of iniquity. 28 Then there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, while you are thrown out. 29 People will come from the East and the West, from the North and the South, and they will take their places at the banquet in the kingdom of God. 30 And those who are last will be first, and those who are first will be last.» 31 That same day some Pharisees came to him and said, «Get away from here, because Herod wants to kill you.» 32 He replied to them, "Go and tell that fox: I drive out demons and heal." the sick Today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will have finished. 33 But I must continue on my way today and tomorrow and the day after, for it is not fitting that a prophet should die outside of Jerusalem. 34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to her! How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing!. 35 »Your house is left to you. I tell you, you will not see me again until the day comes when you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
Luke 14
1 One Sabbath, Jesus went into the house of one of the leading Pharisees to eat, and they were watching him closely. 2 And there before him stood a man suffering from dropsy. 3 Jesus, speaking up, said to the teachers of the law and the Pharisees, «Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?» 4 And they remained silent. He, taking the man by the hand, healed him and sent him away. 5 Then, addressing them, he said: «Which of you, if his donkey or ox falls into a well, "Doesn't he remove it immediately on the Sabbath day?"» 6 And to that they knew only how to reply. 7 Then, noticing the eagerness of the guests to choose the best seats, Jesus told them this parable: 8«When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, lest there be a man more distinguished than you.” 9 and let not the one who invited you both come and say to you: Give him the seat and then let you not begin in confusion to occupy the last place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when the one who invited you comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, move up higher.' Then it will be an honor for you in the presence of the other guests. 11 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. 12 He also said to the one who had invited him, «When you give a dinner or a supper, do not invite your friends, your brothers, your relatives, or rich neighbors, lest they invite you in turn and repay you for what they have received from you. 13 But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind, 14 And you will be glad that they cannot repay you, for it will be repaid to you. the resurrection righteous people.» 15 One of those who were at the table with him, having heard these words, said to Jesus, «Blessed is the one who will share in the banquet in the kingdom of God.» 16 Jesus said to him, «A man gave a great banquet and invited many people. 17 At mealtime, he sent his servant to tell the guests: Come, for everything is now ready. 18 And all of them, unanimously, began to apologize. The first one said to him: I have bought some land and I need to go and see it, please excuse me. 19 The second one said: I bought five pairs of oxen and I'm going to try them out, please excuse me. 20 Another said: I have just gotten married and that is why I cannot go. 21 The servant returned and reported these things to his master. Then the angry head of the household said to his servant, “Go quickly to the streets and lanes of the city and bring here.” the poor, the cripples, the blind and the lame. 22 The servant said, "Master, it has been done as you commanded, and there is still room.". 23 The master said to the servant: Go along the paths and hedges and those you find, force them to enter, so that my house may be filled. 24 For I tell you, none of these men who were invited will taste my feast.» 25 As a large crowd was walking with him, he turned around and said to them: 26 «If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. 28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, and whether he has enough to complete it? 29 For fear that, having laid the foundations of the building, he might not be able to bring it to completion and that all who see it might begin to mock him, 30 saying: This man began to build and he was unable to finish. 31 Or which king, if he is going to do the war To another king, does he not first sit down to deliberate whether he can, with ten thousand men, face an enemy who comes to attack him with twenty thousand? 32 If he cannot do so, while the latter is still far away, he sends him an embassy to negotiate. peace. 33 Therefore, whoever among you does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. 34 Salt is good, but if salt loses its flavor, how can we give it back its taste? 35 Useless for both soil and manure, it is thrown out. Let anyone who has ears hear.»
Luke 15
1 All the publicans and the fishermen They approached Jesus to listen to him. 2 And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, «This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.» 3 Then he told them this parable: 4 «Which of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?” 5 And when he found her, he joyfully put her on his shoulders, 6 And, back home, he gathers his friends and neighbors and says to them: Rejoice with me, because I found my sheep which was lost. 7 So, I tell you, There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents., than for ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance. 8 Or what woman, having ten drachmas, if she loses one, does not light a lamp, sweep her house, and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she found it, she gathered her friends and neighbors and said to them: Rejoice with me, because I found the drachma I had lost. 10 So, I tell you, there are joy in front the angels of God for one sinner who repents.» 11 He also said: "A man had two sons. 12 The younger son said to his father, “Father, give me my share of the estate.” So the father divided his estate between them. 13 A few days later, the youngest son, having gathered all that he had, left for a distant country and there squandered his wealth living in debauchery. 14 When he had spent everything, a great famine came upon that country, and he began to feel need. 15 So he went away and entered the service of a resident of that country, who sent him to his country house to tend the pigs. 16 He would have liked to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but nobody gave him any. 17Then, coming to his senses, he said: How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, while I am dying here of hunger. 18 I will get up and go to my father and say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you,”, 19 I no longer deserve to be called your son: treat me like one of your workers. 20 And he got up and went to his father. As he was still a long way off, his father saw him and, deeply moved, ran up, threw himself on his neck and covered him with kisses. 21 His son said to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.". 22 But the father said to his servants, “Bring the best robe and dress him, put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.”. 23 Bring also the fattened calf and kill it, let us have a celebratory feast: 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. And they began to celebrate. 25 Now the older son was in the fields, and as he came back and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 Calling one of the servants over, he asked him what it was. 27 The servant told him, "Your brother has arrived, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has found it safe and sound.". 28 But he became angry and refused to go in. So the father went out and began to pray to him. 29 He replied to his father: "For so many years I have served you, and have never disobeyed your orders, yet you have never given me a young goat to celebrate with my friends.". 30 And when that other son, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, arrives, you kill the fattened calf for him. 31 The father said to him: You, my son, are always with me and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.»
Luke 16
1 Jesus also said to his disciples: «A rich man had a manager who was accused in his presence of wasting his possessions. 2 He called him and said: What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management: for from now on you will no longer be able to manage my property. 3 Then the steward said to himself, "What shall I do, since my master is taking away my management of his property? I am not strong enough to work the land, and I am ashamed to beg.". 4 I know what I will do, so that when my job is taken away from me, there will be people who will receive me into their homes. 5 So he called in his master's debtors one after another, and said to the first, "How much do you owe my master?" 6 He replied: One hundred barrels of oil. The steward told him: Take your note: sit down quickly and write fifty. 7 Then he said to another, "And you, how much do you owe?" He replied, "One hundred measures of wheat." The steward told him, "Take your bill and write eighty.". 8 And the master praised the dishonest steward for having acted skillfully, because the children of this world are more skillful in dealing with each other than the children of light. 9 I also tell you: Make friends for yourselves by means of the riches of iniquity, so that when you leave this life, they may receive you into the eternal dwellings. 10 He who is faithful in small things is faithful also in great things, and he who is unjust in small things is unjust also in great things. 11 Therefore, if you have not been faithful in the riches of unrighteousness, who will entrust you with the true assets ? 12 And if you have not been faithful in a stranger's possession, who will give you what is yours? 13 No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.» 14 The Pharisees, who loved money, also listened to all this and mocked him. 15 Jesus said to them, «You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts, and what is highly valued in the sight of men is an abomination in the sight of God. 16 The Law and the Prophets go up to John; since John, the kingdom of God has been proclaimed, and everyone strives to enter it. 17 Heaven and earth will pass away more easily than one stroke of the law will perish. 18 Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and anyone who marries a woman divorced by her husband commits adultery. 19 There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who held sumptuous feasts every day. 20 A poor man named Lazarus was lying at his gate, covered with sores, 21 and wishing to fill himself with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table, but even the dogs came to lick his ulcers. 22 Now, it happened that the poor man died and he was carried by the angels in Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side., 24 And he cried out, “Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony from these flames.”. 25 Abraham replied: My son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus received his bad things: But now he is comforted here, and you are in pain. 26 Moreover, between us and you there is forever a great chasm, so that those who would like to pass from here to you cannot do so, and it is impossible to pass from there to us. 27 And the rich man said, “Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, to testify to these things to them lest they also come to this place of torment. 29 Abraham replied: They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them. 30No, Abraham, our father, he replied, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent. 31 But Abraham said to him, »If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, someone will rise from the dead, yet they will not believe it.”
Luke 17
1 Jesus also said to his disciples: «It is impossible that scandals should not come, but woe to him through whom they come. 2 It would be better for him to have a millstone put around his neck and be thrown into the sea, than to scandalize one of these little ones. 3 Be careful of yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. 4 And even if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times returns to you saying, »I repent,” you must forgive him.” 5 The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith."« 6 The Lord replied, «If you had faith like a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and transplanted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. 7 Which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will say to him, when he comes in from the field, “Come quickly and sit down to eat”? 8 Won't he say to him, on the contrary: Prepare my supper, gird yourself and serve me, until I have eaten and drunk, and after that you shall eat and drink? 9 Does he show gratitude to this servant because he did what he was ordered to do? 10 I don't think so. Likewise, when you have done what you were commanded, say: We are useless servants., we did what we had to do. » 11 On his way to Jerusalem, Jesus was close to the border of Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he entered a village, ten lepers came to meet him and, keeping their distance, 13 They raised their voices, saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us."« 14 As soon as he saw them, he said, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were healed. 15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, retraced his steps, glorifying God aloud, 16 And falling face down at Jesus' feet, he gave him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. 17 Then Jesus spoke up and said, «Were not the ten healed? And where are the nine?” 18 Was this foreigner the only one among them found to return and give glory to God? 19 And he said to him, »Rise and go; your faith has saved you.” 20 The Pharisees asked him when the kingdom of God would come, and he answered them, «The kingdom of God does not come in a way that can be observed. 21 We will not say, »It is here,” or “It is there,” for behold, the kingdom of God is in your midst.» 22 He also said to his disciples, «The time will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 You will be told: He is here and: He is there, beware of going there and running after him. 24 For as the flash of lightning shines from one end of the sky to the other, so will it be with the Son of Man in his day. 25 But first he must suffer greatly and be rejected by this generation. 26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 The men ate and drank, they married and gave in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 And as it happened in the days of Lot: people ate and drank, they bought and sold, they planted and built, 29 But on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all: 30 So it will be on the day the Son of Man appears. 31 On that day, let no one who is on the roof and whose belongings are in the house go down to get them, and let no one who is in the field go back. 32 Remember Lot's wife. 33 Whoever seeks to save their life will lose it, and whoever has lost their life will preserve it. 34 I tell you, on that night, of the two people who will be in the same bed, one will be taken and the other left., 35 of two women who will grind together, one will be taken and the other left, [36 of two men who will be in a field, one will be taken and the other left].» 37 They asked him, "Where, Lord?" He replied, "Where the body is, there the vultures will gather."«
Luke 18
1 He told them another parable, to show that they should always pray and never give up. 2 He said: «There was in a certain city a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. 3 There was also a widow in that town who kept coming to him, saying, “Grant me justice against my adversary.”. 4And for a long time he did not want to, but then he said to himself: even if I do not fear God and do not care about men, 5 However, because this widow is bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not keep coming to torment me. 6 "Listen," added the Lord, "to what this unjust judge is saying.". 7 And God would not bring justice to his chosen ones who cry out to him night and day, and he would delay in their regard. ? 8 I'm telling you, He will soon bring them justice. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?» 9 He told this parable again, this time to some people who were convinced of their own perfection and full of contempt for others: 10 «Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself: O God, I thank you that I am not like other men, who are thieves, unjust, and adulterers, nor even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week, and I tithe all my income.» 13 The tax collector, standing at a distance, would not even lift his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying: O God, have mercy on me, a sinner. 14 I'm telling you, He went down to his house, justified., rather than that one, for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.» 15 People also brought their small children to him so that he could touch them, and seeing this, his disciples rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called the children and said, «Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.» 18 Then a leader asked him, "Good Master, what must I do to obtain eternal life?"« 19 Jesus said to him, «Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.”. 20 You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and mother.» 21 He replied, "I have observed all of this since my youth."« 22 Having heard this answer, Jesus said to him, «You still lack one thing: sell everything you have and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.» 23 But when he heard these words, he became sad, because he was very rich. 24 Seeing that he had become sad, Jesus said, «How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God. 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.» 26 Those who were listening to him said, "Who then can be saved?"« 27 He replied, "What is impossible for men is possible for God."« 28 Pierre then said, "You see, we left everything and followed you."« 29 He said to them, «Truly I tell you, no one will ever leave home or parents or brothers or wife or children for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 without receiving much more in this age or in the age to come eternal life.» 31 Then Jesus took the Twelve aside and said to them, «We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that the prophets have written about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. 32 He will be handed over to the pagans and mocked and insulted and spat upon, 33 And after they have flogged him, they will put him to death, and he will rise again on the third day.» 34 But they understood nothing of it; it was a hidden language to them, the meaning of which they did not grasp. 35 As Jesus approached Jericho, it happened that a blind man was sitting by the roadside, begging for alms. 36 Hearing many people passing by, he asked what it was. 37 They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by."« 38 Immediately he cried out, "Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me."« 39 Those who were walking in front rebuked him to silence him, but he shouted all the louder: «Son of David, have mercy on me!» 40 Then Jesus stopped and ordered that he be brought to him, and when the blind man approached, he asked him: 41 «What do you want me to do for you?» He said, «Lord, that I see. » 42And Jesus said to him, «See, your faith has saved you.» 43 At once he saw him and followed him, glorifying God. And all the people, seeing this, gave praise to God.
Luke 19
1 Jesus having entered Jericho, was passing through the city. 2 And there was a man named Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector and wealthy, 3 He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he couldn't because of the crowd, since he was short in stature. 4 Running ahead, he climbed a sycamore tree to see it, because he had to pass by there. 5 When Jesus arrived at that place, he looked up and, seeing him, said to him, «Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for I must stay at your house today.» 6 Zacchaeus hurried downstairs and received him with joy. 7 Seeing this, they all murmured, saying, "He has gone to stay with a sinner."« 8 But Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, «Look, Lord, I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.» 9 Jesus said to him, «Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.» 11 As they listened to this speech, he added a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was about to appear. 12 He said, "A man of noble birth went to a distant country to be invested with the kingship and then return. 13 Having called ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas and said to them: Put them to good use until I return. 14 But his fellow citizens hated him, and they sent messengers after him saying, "We do not want this man to rule over us."» 15 When he returned, after being invested with the kingship, he summoned the servants to whom he had given the money, to find out what profit each had made. 16 The first one came and said: Lord, your mine has gained ten more mines. 17 He said to him, “Well done, good servant; because you have been faithful over a little, you shall have authority over ten cities.”. 18 The second one came and said: Lord, your mine has produced five more mines. 19 "You too," he told him, "govern five cities.". 20 Then another came and said, "Lord, here is your mina, which I have kept in a cloth as a deposit.". 21 Because I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man: you take what you did not deposit and you reap what you did not sow. 22 The king replied, “I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I am a strict man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow.”, 23 Why didn't you put my money in the bank? And when I returned, I would have withdrawn it with the interest. 24 And he said to those who were there, “Take the mina from him and give it to the one who has ten.”. 25 "Sir," they said to him, "he has ten.". 26 I tell you, to everyone who has, more will be given, and from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 27 As for those people who hate me and refused to have me as their king, bring them here and slaughter them in my presence.» 28 After this speech, Jesus began to walk ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When he approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the mountain called Olivet, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 30 saying: "Go to the village opposite, when you enter it, you will find a donkey tied up, on which no man has ever sat, untie it and bring it here. 31 And if someone asks you why you are untying it, you will answer: Because the Lord needs it.» 32 Those who were sent went and found things just as Jesus had told them. 33 As they were untying the donkey, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying this donkey?"« 34 They replied, "Because the Lord needs it."« 35 And they brought it to Jesus, and then, having thrown their cloaks over the donkey, they made Jesus get on it. 36 As he passed by, people spread their coats on the road. 37 When he was nearing the descent from the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples, filled with joy, began to praise God aloud for all miracles that they had seen. 38 «Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord,» they said. “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.” 39 Then some Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, «Teacher, rebuke your disciples.» 40 He replied, "I tell you, if they remain silent, the stones will cry out."« 41 And when he drew near and saw Jerusalem, he wept over it, saying: 42 «"If you too knew, at least on this day given to you, which would bring you peace. But now these things are hidden from your eyes.. 43 Days will come upon you when your enemies will surround you with trenches, besiege you, and press in on you from all sides., 44 They will overthrow you and the children in your womb, and they will not leave one stone upon another within your walls, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.» 45 Having entered the temple, he began to drive out those who were buying and selling there, 46 saying to them, «It is written: My house is a house of prayer, and you have turned it into a den of thieves.. » 47 Jesus spent his days teaching in the temple. And the chief priests, the scribes, and the notables sought to destroy him., 48 But they did not know how to proceed, for all the people were listening, hanging on his every word.
Luke 20
1 One day, as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and proclaiming the good news, the chief priests and the scribes arrived with the elders, 2 and said to him, «Tell us by what authority you are doing these things, or who gave you this authority?» 3 Jesus answered them, «I too have a question for you. Answer me.”. 4Was John's baptism from heaven or from men?» 5 But they were discussing this among themselves: "If we answer, 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why did you not believe in him?'" 6 And if we answer, "Men," the whole crowd will stone us, because they are convinced that John was a prophet.» 7 So they replied that they didn't know where he was from. 8 «And I,» Jesus said to them, “do not tell you by what authority I do these things.” 9 Then he began to tell the people this parable: «A man planted a vineyard and rented it to tenants, and then he went away for a long time to a foreign country. 10 When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants to give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But they beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 He sent yet another servant, but, having beaten him also and treated him unworthily, they sent him away empty-handed. 12 He sent a third, but the tenants also wounded him and threw him out. 13 Then the owner of the vineyard said to himself, »What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps when they see him, they will respect him.” 14 But when the tenants saw him, they said to one another, "This is the heir; let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.". 15 And having thrown him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those tenants and give his vineyard to others.» When they heard this, they said, «God forbid!» 17 But, looking intently at them, Jesus said, «What then is this saying in Scripture: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone?’” 18 Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, and anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.» 19 The chief priests and the scribes sought to seize him at once, but fear of the people held them back, for they understood that it was against them that Jesus had told this parable. 20 They therefore kept a close eye on him and sent spies pretending to be just, to catch him in his words, in order to deliver him to the authority and power of the governor. 21 These people questioned him in these terms: «Teacher, we know that you speak and teach with integrity and impartiality, but that you teach the way of God in truth. 22 Are we permitted, or not, to pay tribute to Caesar?» 23 Jesus, knowing their deceitfulness, said to them, «Why are you tempting me? 24 "Show me a denarius. Whose image and name does it bear?" They answered him, "Caesar's."» 25 And he said to them, «Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.» 26 Thus they could not catch him in any of his words before the people, and admiring his response, they remained silent. 27 Some of the Sadducees, who deny the resurrection, They then approached and questioned him: 28 «Teacher,” they said to him, “Moses gave us this law: If a man dies and has no children, his brother must take his wife and raise up children for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers, the first one took a wife and died childless. 30 The second man took his wife and also died childless., 31 The third one then took her, and so did all seven of them, and they died without leaving any children. 32 After all of them, the woman also died. 33 Which one, then, in the time of the resurrection, "Will she be the woman, as she was of all seven?"» 34 Jesus said to them, «The children of this world marry and are given in marriage, 35 but those who were found worthy to share in the age to come and in the resurrection of the dead, do not take wives and have no husbands, 36 They can no longer die, since they are like the angels and that they are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37 But that the dead are raised, this is what Moses himself made known in the passage of the Burning Bush, when he names the Lord: The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38 But he is not the God of the dead, but living people, "For all are alive before him."» 39 Some of the scribes, taking the floor, said to him, "Master, you have spoken well."« 40 And they no longer dared to ask him any questions. 41 Jesus said to them, «How can anyone say that the Christ is the son of David? 42 David himself said in the Book of Psalms The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, 43 until I make your enemies the footstool for your feet. 44 David calls him Lord, so how can he be his son?» 45 While all the people were listening to him, he said to his disciples: 46 «Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, who like to be greeted in public squares, to occupy the best seats in the synagogues and the best places at banquets: 47 Those who devour widows' houses and make a show of long prayers will suffer a more severe condemnation.»
Luke 21
1 Jesus, looking up, saw the rich putting their offerings into the offering box. 2 He also saw a very poor widow who put two small coins in it., 3 And he said, «I tell you truly, this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4 For all these people gave out of their abundance as an offering to God, but this woman out of her poverty gave everything she had to live on.» 5 Some said that the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and rich offerings, Jesus said: 6 «"Days will come when, of all that you are looking at here, Not one stone will be left upon another that will not be overturned.. » 7 So they asked him, «Teacher, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign that they are about to take place?» 8 Jesus replied, «Beware lest you be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ and the time is near.’ Do not follow them.”. 9 And when you hear of wars and revolts, do not be afraid; these things must happen first, but the end will not come soon.» 10 He then said to them, «Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, plagues and famines in various places, and in the sky terrifying apparitions and extraordinary signs. 12 But before all this, they will lay hands on you and persecute you, dragging you into synagogues and prisons, and bringing you before kings and governors because of my name. 13 This will happen to you, so that you may bear witness to me. 14 Therefore, make it clear to yourselves not to think about your defense in advance., 15 for I myself will give you a mouth and wisdom to which all your enemies will neither be able to respond nor resist. 16 You will be betrayed even by your parents, by your brothers, by your relatives and by your friends, and they will put many of you to death. 17 You will all be hated because of my name. 18 However, not a single hair from your head will be lost, 19 by your consistency, you will save your souls. 20 But when you see armies besieging Jerusalem, Know then that its desolation is near. 21 Those who are in Judea should flee to the mountains, those who are in the city should leave it, and those who are in the countryside should not enter the city. 22 For these will be days of punishment, for the fulfillment of all that is written. 23 Woe to those who are pregnant or nursing in those days, for there will be great distress on the earth and great wrath against that people. 24 They will fall by the edge of the sword, they will be taken captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. 25 And there will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars, and on the earth nations will be in anguish and dismay at the roaring and tossing of the sea., 26 Men wither with fear, expecting what is to come upon the whole earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with great power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to happen, stand up straight and lift up your heads, because your deliverance is drawing near.» 29 And he told them this comparison: «Look at the fig tree and all the trees: 30 As soon as they start to grow, you know by yourselves, just by seeing them, that summer is near. 31 Likewise, when you see these things happening, Know that the kingdom of God is near.. 32 I tell you truly, this generation will not pass away until everything is accomplished. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. 34 Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap., 35 for it will come like a net upon all those who inhabit the face of the whole earth. 36 Therefore, watch and pray without ceasing., so that you may be found worthy to escape all these evils that are going to happen and to stand before the Son of Man. 37 During the day, Jesus taught in the temple, and he would leave it to spend the night on the mountain called Olivet. 38 And all the people, from early morning, came to him in the temple to listen to him.
Luke 22
1 The Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called Passover, was approaching, 2 And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they might put Jesus to death, for they feared the people. 3 Then Satan entered into Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve, 4 and he went to consult with the Princes of the priests and the magistrates on how to hand him over to them. 5 They, filled with joy, promised to give him money. 6 He took matters into his own hands and was looking for a favorable opportunity to hand Jesus over to them without the crowd knowing. 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed. 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, «Go and prepare the Passover meal for us.» 9 They said to him, "Where would you like us to prepare it?"« 10 He answered them, «When you enter the city, you will meet a man carrying a jug of water; follow him into the house he enters, 11 and you will say to the master of this house: The Teacher says to you: Where is the room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples? 12 And he will show you a large, furnished chamber: prepare what is needed there.» 13 They went and found things just as he had told them, and they prepared for Passover. 14 When the hour had come, Jesus and the twelve Apostles sat down to eat, 15 And he said to them, «I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until the Passover is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.» 17 And taking a cup, he gave thanks and said, «Take and share among yourselves. 18 For I tell you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.» 19 Then he took bread, and having given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, «This is my body, which is given for you: do this in remembrance of me.» 20 He did the same for the cup after supper, saying, «This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. 21 However, here is the hand of the one who betrayed me, with me at this table. 22 As for the Son of Man, he will go according to what has been decreed, but woe to the man by whom he is betrayed!» 23 And the disciples began to ask one another which of them should do this. 24A dispute also arose among them as to which of them should be considered the greatest. 25 Jesus said to them, «The kings of the nations rule over them, and those who command them are called Benefactors. 26 But you should not do so, but let the greatest among you be like the least, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who sits at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28 You have remained with me in my trials, 29 And I am preparing a kingdom for you, just as my Father has prepared it for me., 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.» 31 And the Lord said, «Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has asked to sift you like wheat, 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail, and when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers. 33 “Lord,” Peter said to him, “I am ready to go with you and in prison and to death.» 34 Jesus answered him, «I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know me.» 35 He also said to his disciples, «When I sent you out without purse, bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?» “Nothing,” they said to him. 36 He added: «But now, let him who has a purse take it, and likewise the one who has a bag, and let him who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you, this Scripture must still be fulfilled in me: »He was numbered with the transgressors.” For what concerns me is drawing to a close.» 38 They said to him, "Lord, there are two swords here." He replied, "That is enough."« 39 Having gone out, he went, according to his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40 When he arrived at that place, he said to them, «Pray that you will not fall into temptation.» 41 Then he moved away from them to a distance of a stone's throw, and having knelt down, he prayed, 42 saying, «Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me. Yet not my will, but yours be done.» 43 Then an angel appeared to him from heaven and strengthened him. 44 And being in agony, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like drops of blood flowing to the ground. 45 After praying, he got up and came to the disciples, whom he found asleep from sorrow. 46 And he said to them, «Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray, so that you will not fall into temptation.» 47 While he was still speaking, a group of people appeared, with the one called Judas, one of the Twelve, leading the way. He approached Jesus to kiss him. 48 And Jesus said to him, «Judas, you are betraying the Son of Man with a kiss.» 49 Those who were with Jesus, seeing what was going to happen, said to him, «Lord, should we strike with the sword?» 50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus said, «Stay there.» And he touched the man’s ear and healed him. 52 Then, addressing the Princes of the priests, the officers of the temple, and the Elders who had come to take him, he said to them: «You have come as after a robber, with swords and clubs. 53 »I was with you in the temple every day, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.” 54 Having seized him, they led him away and brought him into the house of the high priest, Peter following at a distance. 55 Having lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard, they sat around it and Peter sat among them. 56 A servant girl, who saw him sitting by the fire, stared at him intently and said, "This man was also with him."« 57 But Peter denied Jesus, saying, "Woman, I do not know him."« 58Shortly after, another man saw him and said, "You are one of them." Peter replied, "Man, I am not."« 59 An hour had passed when another man began to say confidently, "Surely this man was with him, for he is from Galilee."« 60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you mean." And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter, and Peter remembered the word that the Lord had spoken to him: «Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.» 62 And having left the house, Pierre wept bitterly. 63 But those who were holding Jesus mocked him and beat him. 64 They blindfolded him and, striking him in the face, questioned him, saying, "Guess who hit you."« 65 And they hurled many other insults at him. 66 As soon as it was light, the elders of the people, the chief priests, and the scribes gathered together and brought Jesus into their assembly. They said, «If you are the Christ, tell us.» 67 He answered them, «If I tell you, you will not believe, 68 And if I question you, you will not answer me and you will not release me. 69 "From now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God."» 70 Then they all said, "Are you then the Son of God?" He answered them, "You say so, and I am."« 71 And they said, "What further need do we have of testimony? We ourselves have heard it from his own lips."«
Luke 23
1 Then the whole assembly stood up and led Jesus before Pilate, 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, "We have found this man inciting our nation to revolt and forbidding us to pay tribute to Caesar, calling himself Christ the King."« 3 Pilate questioned him, saying, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus answered him, "You say so."« 4 Pilate said to the chief priests and the people, "I find no guilt in this man."« 5 But redoubling their efforts, they said, "He is stirring up the people, spreading his teaching throughout Judea, from Galilee, where he began, even here."« 6 When Pilate heard Galilee mentioned, he asked if the man was a Galilean., 7and having learned that he was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him back to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. 8 Herod was overjoyed to see Jesus, for he had long desired to do so, because he had heard much about him and hoped to see him perform some miracle. 9 He asked him many questions, but Jesus did not answer him. 10 Now, the Princes of the priests and the Scribes were there, accusing him obstinately. 11 But Herod, with his guards, treated him with contempt, after mocking him and dressing him in a splendid robe, and sent him back to Pilate. 12 On that very day, Herod and Pilate became friends, from having been enemies before. 13 Pilate, having assembled the chief priests, the magistrates, and the people, 14 He told them: «You brought this man to me as someone inciting the people to revolt; I questioned him in your presence and found none of the crimes you accuse him of,”, 15 nor Herod either, for I sent you back to him and, as you see, nothing deserving of death has been proven against him. 16 "I will therefore release him after having him punished."» 17 [Pilate was obliged, on the day of the festival, to grant them the release of a prisoner]. 18 But the whole crowd cried out, "Kill this man and release Barabbas to us!"« 19 which had been put in prison because of a sedition that had taken place in the city and a murder. 20 Pilate, who wished to release Jesus, addressed them again, 21 But they responded with this cry: «Crucify him! Crucify him!» 22 For the third time, Pilate said to them, «What wrong has he done? I have found nothing in him deserving death. So I will have him punished and send him away.» 23 But they persisted, loudly demanding that he be crucified, and their clamor grew louder. 24 Pilate therefore declared that it would be done as they asked. 25 He released the one they were demanding, who had been put in prison for sedition and murder, and he handed Jesus over to their will. 26 As they led him away, they seized a man named Simon, from Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and they laid the cross on him, to carry it behind Jesus. 27 However, he was followed by a large crowd of people and women who beat their breasts and lamented over him. 28 Turning to them, Jesus said, «Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children, 29 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, “Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.”. 30 Then men will begin to say to the mountains: Fall on us, and to the hills: Cover us. 31 For if we treat green wood this way, what will we do with dry wood?» 32 And two criminals were also brought in to be put to death with Jesus. 33 When they arrived at the place called Calvary, they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on the right, the other on the left. 34 But Jesus said, «Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.» Then they divided his clothes among themselves by casting lots. 35 The people stood there watching. The rulers joined him in mocking Jesus, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ, the chosen one of God."« 36 The soldiers also mocked him, approaching and offering him vinegar, saying: 37 «"If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself."» 38 Above his head was an inscription bearing, in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew characters: "This is the king of the Jews."« 39 But one of the criminals who were hanged on the cross was insulting him, saying, «Since you are the Christ, Save yourself and save us. » 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, you too, condemned as you are to the same punishment? 41 "For us, it's justice, because we're receiving what our crimes deserve, but he did nothing wrong."» 42 And he said to Jesus, «Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.» 43 Jesus answered him, «Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.» 44 It was about the sixth hour, when darkness covered the whole land until the ninth hour. 45 The sun grew dark and the veil of the temple was torn in two. 46And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, «Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.» And when he had said this, he breathed his last. 47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, glorified God and said, "Surely this man was righteous."« 48 And all the multitude that had gathered for this spectacle, considering what had happened, went back beating their chests. 49 But all of Jesus' friends kept their distance, with women who had followed him from Galilee and were contemplating all of this. 50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the council, a good and righteous man, 51 who had not given his assent either to the plan of others, nor to their actions, he was from Arimathea, a city of Judea, and he too was waiting for the kingdom of God. 52 This man went to Pilate and asked him for the body of Jesus., 53 and having taken him down, he wrapped him in a shroud and laid him in a tomb hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever been laid before. 54It was Preparation Day and the Sabbath was about to begin. 55 Women who had come from Galilee with Jesus, having accompanied Joseph, considered the tomb and how the body of Jesus had been laid in it. 56 So they returned home and prepared spices and perfumes, and on the Sabbath day they rested, according to the commandment.
Luke 24
1 But on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they went to the tomb with the spices they had prepared. 2They saw that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb, 3 And when they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were filled with anxiety about this, two men, dressed in resplendent robes, appeared standing beside them. 5 As they bowed their faces to the ground in their terror, the men said to them, «Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but he has risen. Remember what he told you while he was still in Galilee: 7 "The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinners, be crucified, and on the third day rise again."» 8 They then remembered the words of Jesus, 9 And when they returned from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 Those who told these things to the Apostles were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Married, mother of Jacques and their other companions. 11 But they regarded their speeches as delusion and did not believe these women. 12 However, Peter got up and ran to the tomb and, having bent down, saw only the linen cloths on the ground and went home, astonished at what had happened. 13 Now, on that same day, two disciples were on their way to a village called Emmaus, about sixty stadia from Jerusalem, 14 and they talked about all these events. 15 While they were conversing and exchanging thoughts, Jesus himself joined them and walked with them., 16 but their eyes were held back so that they did not recognize him. 17 He said to them, "What are you discussing as you walk?" Then they stopped, looking very sad. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only foreigner who has come to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?" 19 »What things?« he asked them. They replied, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: 20 how the chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. 21 As for us, we had hoped that he was the one who would deliver Israel, but besides all this, it is now the third day since these things have happened. 22 In truth, some of the women who are with us have greatly astonished us: they went to the tomb before daybreak, 23 And not having found his body, they came and said that angels had appeared to them and announced that he was alive. 24 Some of our people went to the tomb and found everything as women They had said so, but they didn't see him.» 25 Then Jesus said to them, «O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken. 26 Did not Christ have to suffer all these things in order to enter into his glory?» 27 Then, beginning with Moses and going through all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. 28 When they were near the village they were going to, he pretended to go further. 29 But they urged him strongly, saying, «Stay with us, for it is getting late and the day is almost over.» So he went in to stay with them. 30 While he was at the table with them, he took the bread, said a blessing, then broke it and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he became invisible to their eyes. 32 And they said to one another, «Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?» 33 Rising at that very hour, they returned to Jerusalem, where they found the Eleven and their companions gathered together, 34 who were saying, "The Lord has truly risen and has appeared to Simon."« 35 They, in turn, recounted what had happened to them on the way and how they had recognized him in the breaking of the bread. 36 While they were talking like this, Jesus stood among them and said to them, « Peace "Be with you. It is I, do not be afraid."» 37 Seized with astonishment and terror, they thought they were seeing a spirit. 38 But he said to them, «Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Look at my hands and my feet, it is I. Touch me and see that a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.» 40 Having spoken thus, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 As in their joy they still hesitated to believe and could not recover from their astonishment, he said to them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"« 42 They presented him with a piece of roasted fish and a honeycomb. 43 He took them and ate them in front of them. 44 Then he said to them, «This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.» 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 And he said to them, «Thus it is written: ‘And thus the Christ had to suffer, and on the third day rise from the dead,’”, 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses to these things. 49 »I am going to send you the gift that my Father promised; and you, stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” 50 Then he led them out of the city, as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he parted from them and was taken up into heaven. 52 For them, after worshipping him, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God.
