A fifty-year-old schism

Founded in 1970 by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in opposition to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) has always maintained a firm doctrinal line: Catholic truth is not negotiable. The schism became formalized in 1988 with the unauthorized ordination of four bishops, leading to their excommunication. Since then, Rome and the Society have continued to engage in dialogue without ever truly reconciling.

Concessions without reconciliation

The Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) does not reject the Catholic faith—it rejects what it perceives as its distortion. Its doctrinal "fixism," the conviction that truth was established before the 19th century, makes any dialogue with a Church that recognizes the authority of recent councils structurally impossible. Benedict XVI, and then Francis, made numerous canonical concessions: liberalization of the Latin Mass, lifting of excommunications, and sacramental faculties. Nothing was enough, because the SSPX demands doctrinal recognition, not just practical tolerance.

The 2026 Break

Father Pagliarani's letter in February 2026 marked the end of ambiguities. The Society announced new episcopal ordinations for July 2026 and clearly signaled to Rome that it wished to be left alone. For the Vatican, this was a definitive break. For the SSPX, it was a logical continuation.

The interest of some young people in the Latin Mass should not be confused with an adherence to the radical doctrinal positions of the Fraternity — many are seeking a liturgical aesthetic, not a rejection of Vatican II.
