Chapter 1
1 Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:
2 to know wisdom and instruction; to understand sensible speech;
3 to acquire enlightened education, justice, fairness and righteousness;
4 to give discernment to the simple, and knowledge and discretion to the young.
5 Let the wise listen, and they will gain knowledge; the discerning person will understand prudent advice,
6 he will understand proverbs and the mysterious meanings, the maxims of the wise and their enigmas.
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
PART ONE.
GENERAL WARNINGS OF WISDOM.
— Do not associate with men of violence. —
8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and do not forsake your mother’s teaching;
9 for it is a crown of grace for your head, and an ornament for your neck.
10 My son, if sinners want to seduce you, do not give in.
11 If they say, «Come with us, let us set traps for spread blood, tendons for no reason traps to the innocent.
12 Let us swallow them alive, as do the entire Sheol, like those who go down into the pit.
13 We will find all kinds of precious goods, we will fill our houses with plunder;
14 you will shoot your share "If we are drawn by lot, there will only be one purse for all of us."
15 My son, do not go with them on the road, turn your foot away from their path;
16 For their feet run to evil, they hasten to shed blood.
17 It is in vain that one casts the net before the eyes of all that has wings;
18 of them, it's against their own blood with which they lay traps; it is to their souls that they tend traps.
19 Such are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain; gain brings ruin to those who have it.
— Calls of wisdom. —
20 Wisdom cries out in the streets, she raises her voice in the public squares.
21 She preaches in noisy street corners; at the entrance of the city gates, she speaks her words:
22 «How long, simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?”
23 Turn around to hear my rebuke; behold, I will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you.
24 «Because I call and you resist, because I stretch out my hand and no one pays attention,
25 Since you disregard all my advice and do not want my rebuke,
26 I too will laugh at your misfortune; I will mock you when terror comes upon you.,
27 when terror comes upon you like a storm, when calamity strikes you like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.
28 «Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; they will seek me, but they will not find me.
29 Because they hated knowledge and did not desire the fear of the Lord,
30 because’They did not want my advice, and they scorned all my rebukes,
31 They will eat the fruit of their ways, and they will be filled with their own advice.
32 For the error of the simple kills them, and the complacency of fools destroys them.
33 But whoever listens to me will rest securely, and will be at ease, without fear of harm.»
Chapter 2
— Advantages associated with the pursuit of wisdom. —
1 My son, if you receive my words and treasure my commandments within you;
2 making your ear attentive to wisdom, and inclining your heart towards understanding;
3 Yes, if you call for prudence, and if you raise your voice to understanding,
4 if you seek it like money, and if you dig it like to discover a treasure;
5 Then you will understand the fear of Yahweh, and you will find the knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom from his mouth exit science and prudence;
7 He keeps happiness for the upright; he is a shield for those who walk in perfection;
8 He protects the paths of justice; he watches over the ways of his faithful ones.
9 Then you will understand justice, equity, uprightness, and all the paths of goodness.

11 Discernment will watch over you, and understanding will guard you,
12 to deliver you from the way of evil, from the man who speaks perverse words,
13 of those who abandon the straight paths, in order to walk in dark ways,
14 who rejoice in doing evil, and take pleasure in the worst perversions,
15 whose paths are winding and which follow oblique routes; —
16 to deliver you from the woman who belongs to another, from the adulterous woman who uses seductive words,
17 who abandons the companion of his youth, and forgets the covenant of his God;
18 For she and her house are inclined toward death, and her way conduit to hell;
19 of all those who go to her, none return, none find their way back to the paths of life.
20 So you will walk in the way of good men, and you will keep to the paths of the righteous.
21 For the upright will inhabit the earth, and the blameless will dwell there;
22 But the wicked will be cut off from the earth, and the faithless will be uprooted from it.
Chapter 3

1 My son, do not forget my teachings, and let your heart keep my precepts.
2 They will give you long days, years of life and peace.

4 So you will find favor and auras true wisdom, in the eyes of God and men.
5 Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 Remember him in all your ways, and he will make straight your paths.
7 Don't be wise to your own eyes; fear Yahweh and turn away from evil.
8 This will bring health to your body and refreshment to your bones.
9 Honor God with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your income.
10 Then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will overflow with new wine.
11 My son, do not despise the discipline of Yahweh, and do not abhor his punishments.
12 For the Lord disciplines those he loves, like a father punished the child he cherishes.
— The price of wisdom. —
13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who acquires understanding!
14 Its acquisition is better than that of money, its possession than that of pure gold.
15 It is more precious than pearls, all the jewels cannot equal it.
16 In his right hand is long life, in his left hand, riches and honor.
17 Its paths are pleasant paths, all its trails, trails of peace.
18 It is a tree of life for those who grasp it, and the one who clings to it is happy.
19 By wisdom the Lord laid the foundations of the earth, and by understanding he established the heavens.
20 It is through his science that the abysses have opened, and that the clouds distill the dew.
21 My son, do not let them depart from your sight; keep wisdom and discretion;
22 They will be the life of your soul, and the ornament of your neck.
23 Then you will walk securely in your path, and your foot will not stumble.
24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid; and when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
25 You will not have to fear sudden terror, nor an attack from the wicked.
26 For Yahweh will be your confidence, and he will keep your foot from every snare.
— Advice concerning relationships with others. —
27 Do not withhold a favor from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to L'’to agree.
28 Do not say to your neighbor, «Go and come back, tomorrow I will give,» when you can give on time.
29 Do not plot evil against your neighbor when he is at peace near you.
30 Do not argue with someone without cause, when he has not wronged you.
— Don't envy the violent. —
31 Do not envy a violent man, and do not choose any of his ways:
32 For Yahweh detests the perverse, but his intimacy is with the upright in heart.
33 The curse of Yahweh is in the house of the wicked, but he blesses the house of the righteous.
34 He mocks the mockers, and gives grace to the humble.
35 Glory will be the portion of the wise, but the fools will have disgrace.
Chapter 4
— Advantages of wisdom. —
1 Listen, my sons, the instruction of a father, and pay attention, to learn understanding;
2 For I give you good teaching: do not forsake my teaching.
3 I too was a son to my father, a tender and only son to my mother.
4 He instructed me and said to me, «Let your heart hold fast to my words, observe my precepts, and you will live.
5 Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget the words of my mouth, and do not turn away from them.
6 Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will preserve you.
7 Here is The beginning of wisdom: acquire wisdom; at the cost of all that you possess, acquire understanding.
8 Hold her in high esteem, and she will exalt you; she will bring you glory if you embrace her.
9 She will place a crown of grace on your head, and adorn you with a beautiful diadem.»
10 Listen, my son, and receive my words, and the years of your life will multiply.
11 I will teach you the way of wisdom, I will lead you in the paths of uprightness.
12 When you walk, your steps will not be hindered, and when you run, you will not stumble.
13 Hold fast to instruction, do not forsake it; guard it, for it is your life.
14 Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of evil men.
15 Avoid it, do not pass by it, turn away from it and pass by.
16 For they do not sleep unless they do evil; their sleep flees unless they cause to fall person.
17 For they eat the bread of wickedness, they drink the wine of violence.
18 The path of the righteous is like the brilliant light morning, whose brightness increases until day breaks.
19 The way of the wicked is like darkness; they do not see what makes them stumble.
20 My son, pay attention to my words, listen closely to my speeches.
21 Do not let them depart from your sight, keep them in the midst of your heart.
22 For they are life to those who find them, health to their whole body.
23 Guard your heart above all else, for from it spring forth the sources of life.
24 Remove crooked speech from your mouth, and put falsehood far from your lips.
25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, and let your eyelids turn directly before you.
26 Make a level path for your feet, and let all your ways be straight.
27 Do not incline to the right or to the left, and turn your foot away from evil.
Chapter 5
— Avoid the adulterous woman. —
1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom, and listen to my understanding,
2 so that you may retain discretion, and that your lips may preserve knowledge.
3 For the lips of the adulteress drip honey, and her palate is sweeter than oil.
4 But in the end it is bitter like wormwood, sharp like a double-edged sword.
5 His feet descend towards death, his steps go straight to Sheol.
6 She does not consider the path of life, her steps go uncertain, she does not know Or.
7 And now, my Sons, listen to me, and do not stray from the words of my mouth.
8 Keep your way away from her, do not approach the door of her house,
9 lest you give the flower to others of your youth, and your years under the cruel tyrant;
10 lest strangers should become filled with your possessions, and that the fruit of your work does not pass in someone else's house;
11 lest you should groan at last, when your flesh and your body are consumed,
12 and that you do not say, “How then could I have hated discipline, and how could my heart despise reproof?”
13 How could I have Not to listen to the voice of my teachers, not to lend an ear to those who instructed me?
14 I almost came to the height of misfortune, in the midst of the people and the assembly.
15 Drink water from your cistern, from the streams that flow from your well.
16 Let your springs flow outwards, that your Streams flow in the public squares!
17 Let them be for you alone, and not for strangers with you!
18 May your fountain be blessed, and find joy in the wife of your youth.
19 Charming doe, graceful gazelle, — may her charms intoxicate you at all times, be always enamored of her love!
20 Why, my son, should you fall in love with a stranger, and kiss the breast of an unknown woman?
21 For before the eyes of the Lord are the ways of man; he considers all his paths.
22 The villain is caught in his own iniquities, he is seized by the bonds of his sin.
23 He will die for lack of correction; he will be deceived by the excess of his folly.
Chapter 6
— Against sureties. —
1 My son, if you have stood surety for your friend, if you have given your pledge for a stranger,
2 If you are bound by the words of your mouth, if you are caught by the words of your mouth,
3 So do this, my friend: free yourself! Since you have fallen into the hands of your neighbor, go, bow down and urge him on!
4 Give neither sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids;
5. Break free, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like the bird from the fowler's hand.
— Against laziness. —
6 Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider its ways and be wise.
7 She who has neither boss nor inspector works, nor sovereign,
8 It gathers its food in the summer, it collects its sustenance at harvest time.
9 How long, O sluggard, will you lie down? When will you get up from your sleep?
10 "A little sleep, a little dozing, a little folding of the hands on the bed."«
11 And your poverty He will come like a traveler, and your want like an armed man!
— Against duplicity. —
12 A perverse man, an unjust man, walks with perversity in his mouth;
13 He blinks his eyes, scratches his foot, makes signs with his fingers.
14 Perversity is in his heart; he plots evil at all times; he stirs up quarrels.
15 Therefore his ruin will come suddenly; he will be broken all at once and beyond remedy.
— Seven things that displease Yahweh. —
16 There are six things that Yahweh hates, seven that are abhorrent to him:
17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that spill innocent blood,
18 The heart that devises sinful plans, the feet eager to rush into evil,
19 the false witness who utters lies, and the one who sows discord among brothers.
— Against adultery. —
20 My son, keep the commandment of your father, and do not forsake the teaching of your mother.
21 Bind them constantly to your heart, fasten them around your neck.
22 He will guide you in your walk, he will watch over you in your sleep; when you awake, he will talk with you.
23 For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light, and the admonitions that instruct are the way of life.
24 They will protect you from the wicked woman, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.
25 Do not covet her beauty in your heart, and let not her seduce you with her eyelids.
26 For the courtesan we reduce to a piece of bread, and the married woman traps a precious life.
27 Can a man put fire in his bosom, and not his clothes catch fire?
28 Or shall a man walk on hot coals and not have his feet burned?
29 Thus is it the same for He who goes to his neighbor's wife: whoever touches her will not go unpunished.
30 We do not despise a thief who steals to satisfy his hunger when he has nothing to eat:
31 surprised, he gives back seven times as much, he gives away everything he has in his house.
32 But he who corrupts a woman lacks sense; he who acts in this way destroys himself;
33 he born collects that a wound and an ignominy, and its disgrace will not be erased.
34 For jealousy excites the man's fury outraged ; He is merciless on the day of vengeance;
35 He shows no regard for any ransom; he does not’in He doesn't want to, but you'd still multiply the gifts.
Chapter 7
— Same subject. —
1 My son, hold fast to my words, and keep my commandments within you.
2 Observe my precepts, and you will live, guard my teaching as the apple of your eye.
3. Bind them on your fingers, write them on the table of your heart.
4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister!” and call understanding your friend,
5 so that she may protect you from another man's wife, from the adulteress who speaks sweet words.
6 Being At the window of my house, I was looking through the latticework.
7 I saw among the fools, I noticed among the young men a boy devoid of sense.
8 He was walking in the street, near the home of’a foreigner, and he walked towards his home.
9 It was at dusk, at the fall of day, in the middle of the night and darkness.
10 And then a woman approached him, having the attire of a courtesan and the dissimulation in the heart.
11 She is impetuous and untamable; her feet cannot rest in her house;
12 Sometimes in the street, sometimes in the squares, and near every corner, she lies in wait.
13 She seized the young man and kisses her, and with a cheeky face says to her:
14 «I was supposed to offer peaceful victims, today I have fulfilled my vows.
15 That is why I went out to meet you, to seek you, and I found you.
16 I have dressed my bed with blankets, with rugs of Egyptian thread.
17 I perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
18 Come, let us be intoxicated with love until morning, let us give ourselves over to the delights of pleasure.
19 Car My My husband is not at home; he has gone on a long trip.;
20 He took the bag of money with him; he will not return home until the full moon.»
21 She seduces him with her words, she entices him with the words of her lips;
22 He immediately follows her, like an ox going to the slaughter, like a fool running to punishment by fetters,
23 until an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird that rushes into a net, not knowing that its life is at stake.
24 And now, my sons, listen to me, and pay attention to the words of my mouth.
25 Do not let your heart turn away to his ways, do not stray into his paths.
26 For it has caused many injuries, and many were its victims.
27 His house is the way to Sheol, which leads down to the abode of death.
Chapter 8
— Wisdom praises itself. —
1 Does not wisdom cry out, does not understanding raise her voice?
2 It is at the top of the heights, on the road, at the junction of the paths, that it places itself;
3 Near the gates, at the city gates, at the entrance to the gates, she raises her voice:
4 «Men, it is to you that I cry out, and my voice is addressed to the children of men.
5 You simple ones, learn prudence; you fools, learn understanding.
6 Listen, for I have wonderful things to say, and my lips are ready to teach which is right.
7 «For my mouth speaks the truth, and my lips abhor iniquity.
8 All the words of my mouth are just; there is nothing false or crooked in them.
9 All are just for the intelligent, and right for those who find knowledge.
10 Receive my instruction rather than silver, and knowledge rather than pure gold.
11 For wisdom is better than pearls, and the most precious things cannot equal it.
12 «I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and I possess knowledge of discretion.
13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil, pride and arrogance, the way of evil and perverse speech, that's what I hate it.
14 Counsel and success are mine; I am the intelligence, the strength is mine.
15 Through me kings reign, and princes decree what is just.
16 Through me rule the chiefs and the great men—all the judges of the earth.
17 I love those who love me, and those who earnestly seek me find me.
18 With me are riches and honor, lasting wealth and righteousness.
19 My fruit is better than gold, than pure gold, and what comes from me is better than refined silver.
20 I walk in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of justice,
21 to give wealth to those who love me, and to fill their treasures.
22 «Yahweh possessed me at the beginning of his ways, before his former works.
23 I was founded from eternity, from the beginning, before the origins of the earth.
24 There were no deeps when I was born, no springs full of water.
25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills, I was brought forth,
26 when he had not yet made the earth, nor the plains, nor the first elements of the dust of the globe.
27 When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,
28 when he established the clouds above, and subdued the springs of the deep,
29 when he fixed its limit to the sea, so that the waters would not transgress its boundaries, when he laid the foundations of the earth.
30 I was working beside him, rejoicing every day, and constantly playing in his presence,
31 playing on the globe of his earth, and finding my delight among the children of men.
32 «And now, my sons, listen to me; blessed are those who keep my ways!”
33 Listen to instruction and become wise; do not reject it.
34 Blessed is the man who listens to me, who watches daily at my gates, and who guards my doorposts!
35 For whoever finds me finds life, and obtains favor from Yahweh.
36 But whoever offends me wounds his own soul; all who hate me love death.»
Chapter 9
— Banquet of Wisdom. —
1 Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn its seven pillars.
2 She sacrificed her victims, mixed her wine, and set her table.
7 He who rebukes a mocker invites ridicule, and he who rebukes the wicked attracts the outrage.
8 Do not rebuke a mocker, lest he hate you; rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.
9 Give instruction to the wise, and they will become wiser; teach the righteous, and they will increase her know.
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
11 For through me your days will be multiplied, by me The years of your life will increase.
12 If you are wise, you are wise to your own advantage; if you are a mocker, you alone will bear the consequences. the penalty.
— Banquet of madness. —
13 Madness is a noisy, stupid woman who knows nothing.
14 She has seat, at the door of his house, on a seat, in the heights of the city,
15 to invite passers-by who are going straight on their way:
16 «Let the simple one come in here!» She said to the one who lacked sense:
17 «The stolen waters are more sweet, and the bread of mystery is more pleasant ! "»
18 And he does not know that there are shadows there, and that his guests arealready in the depths of Sheol.

21 The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of understanding.
22 It is the blessing of the Lord that brings riches, and hardship that we take It adds nothing to that.

32 The lips of the righteous know grace, but the mouth of the wicked knows perversity.
Chapter 11
1 A false balance is an abomination to Yahweh, but a just weight is pleasing to him.
2 If pride comes, then disgrace will follow; but wisdom is with the humble.

13 A slanderer reveals secrets, but a faithful man keeps hidden things.

34 You will be like a man lying in the middle of the sea, like a man asleep at the top of a mast.
35 «I was hit… I’m not hurt! I was beaten… I don’t feel anything!… When will I wake up?… I need more!»
Chapter 24
— 4-NEW SERIES OF TIPS. —
— Don't arouse envy in the wicked. —
1 Do not envy wicked men, nor desire to be with them.
2 For their hearts devise violence, and their lips speak only misfortune.
— Practical advantages of wisdom. —
3 By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established.
4 It is through science that the interior is filled with all precious and pleasant goods.
5 A wise man is full of strength, and he who has knowledge shows great power.
6 For with prudence you will drive the war, and salvation lies in the abundance of counselors.
7 Wisdom is too much high for the fool; he does not open his mouth at the door of the city.
— The intriguing one. —
8 He who plans to do evil is called a craftsman of schemes.
— The madman. —
9 The plan of the fool is sin, and the mocker is an abomination among men.
— The indolent one. —
10 If you show yourself weak in the day of distress, your strength is only weakness.
— To come to the aid of the unfortunate oppressed. —
11 Deliver those who are being dragged to their deaths; save those who are staggering to the slaughter!
12 If you say, «But we didn’t know!» He who weighs hearts will not THE Doesn't he see? He who watches over your soul doesn't THE Does he not know, and will he not repay each person according to their deeds?
— The honey of wisdom. —
13 My son, eat honey, for it is good; a honeycomb is sweet to your taste.
14 Know that wisdom is the same for your soul; if you acquire it, there is a future, and your hope will not be frustrated.
— The villain became a victim of his own wickedness. —
15 Do not, O wicked one, lay snares for the dwelling of the righteous, and do not devastate the place where he rests;
16 For the righteous fall seven times, yet rise again, but the wicked stumble into calamity.
— Do not rejoice in the misfortune of your enemy. —
17 If your enemy falls, do not rejoice, and let not your heart be glad in his ruin,
18 lest Yahweh should see it, and it should be evil in his sight, and turn away his anger from him.
— Don't arouse envy in the wicked. —
19 Do not fret because of the wicked, nor envy the perverse,
20 For there is no future for him who does evil, and the lamp of the wicked will be put out.
— Fear Yahweh and the king. —
21 My son, fear Yahweh and the king; do not associate with turbulent men;
22 For suddenly their calamity will arise, and who knows the ruin of each?
OTHER WORDS OF THE WISE.
23 The following also comes from the wise:
— Justice in judgment. —
It is not good to take persons into account when making judgments.
24 Whoever says to the wicked, «You are righteous,» the peoples curse him, the nations abhor him.
25 But those who correct him are applauded; blessing and happiness come upon them.
— Various maxims. —
26 He kisses on the lips the one who answers with true words.
27 Order your work outside, apply it to your field, then you will build your house.
28 Do not bear light witness against your neighbor: would you deceive with your lips?
29 Do not say, «As he has done to me, I will do to him; I will repay him according to his deeds.»
— The lazy man's field. —
30 I passed by the field of a sluggard, and by the vineyard of a fool.
31 And behold, … thorns grew up everywhere, brambles covered its surface, and the stone wall collapsed.
32 I looked, And I applied my heart, I considered, and I drew this lesson:
33 «A little sleep, a little dozing, a little folding of the hands to sleep,
34 and your poverty will come like a prowler, and your poverty like an armed man.»
Proverbs of Solomon collected by the people of Hezekiah.
Chapter 25
1 These are also some of Solomon's Proverbs, collected by the men of Hezekiah, king of Judah.
2 It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search them out.
3 Heaven in its height, earth in its depth, and the hearts of kings are unsearchable.
— Dangers caused by the villain. —
4 Remove the dross from the silver, and a vessel for the refiner will come out.
5 Remove the wicked from before the king, and his throne will be established in righteousness.
— Humility in front of the big boys. —
6 Do not put on airs before the king, and do not put yourself in the place of the great;
7 For it is better that they say to you, «Come up here,» than that they humiliate you before the prince whom your eyes have seen.
— Discretion. —
8 Don't leave too much quickly in protest, for fear that in the end you won't know What to do?.
9 When your neighbor insults you, defend yourself against your neighbor, but do not reveal another's secret.,
10 lest the one who hears of it should cover you with shame, and your disgrace should not be erased.
11 Like apples of gold in settings of silver, so is a word spoken at the right time.
12 Like a gold ring and an ornament of fine gold, so is the wise man who takes back a docile ear.
13 Like the coolness of snow at harvest time, so is a faithful messenger to those who send him; he gladdens the soul of his master.
14 Clouds and wind without rain, such is the man who boasts of false gifts.
15 By patience The judge is persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break bones.
— Another form of discretion. —
16 If you find honey, eat only what you need, lest you vomit it up when you are full.
17 Do not set foot in your neighbor’s house often, lest he become weary of you and hate you.
18 A club, a sword, and a sharp arrow—that is the man who bears false witness against his neighbor.
19 A broken tooth and a slipping foot, that's the confidence that’inspired a treacherous man on the day of misfortune.
20. Take off your coat on a cold day, spread Vinegar on saltpeter, that is what he does when he sings songs to a grieving heart.
— Noble revenge. —
21 If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink;
22 because you are heaping coals on his head, and Yahweh will reward you.
23 The north wind brings forth the rain, and the tongue who slanders In secret, an irritated face.
24 It is better to live in the corner of a roof than to stay with a quarrelsome wife.
25 Fresh water for a thirsty person is good news. coming from a distant land.
26 A troubled fountain and a corrupt spring—that is the righteous man who stumbles before the wicked.
27 It is not good to eat much honey; thus, whoever wants to fathom the majesty divine will be overwhelmed by his own glory.
28 A forced city that no longer has walls, such is the man who cannot contain himself.
Chapter 26
1 Like snow in summer, and rain during harvest, so honor is not fitting for a fool.
2 Like the sparrow that escapes, like the swallow that flies away, so the curse without cause does not reach.
— About fools. —
3 The whip is for the horse, the bit for the donkey, and the rod for the backs of fools.
4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you yourself become like him.
5 Answer the fool according to his folly, lest he consider himself wise.
6 He cuts off his feet, he drinks iniquity, he who gives messages to a fool.
7 “Take off the legs of the lame,” is the saying from the mouth of the fool.
8 It is like attaching a stone to a sling to give glory to a fool.
9 Like a thorn that pierces the hand of a man "Drunk" is a saying in the mouth of fools.
10 Like an archer who wounds everyone, so is he who hires fools and passersby.
11 Like a dog that returns to its vomit, so is a fool who returns to his folly.
12 If you see a man who is wise in his own eyes, you should have more hope for a fool than for him.
— The lazy one. —
13 The lazy man said, «There is a lion on the road, there is a lion in the streets.»
14 The door turns on its hinges, so does the sluggard on his bed.
15 The lazy man puts his hand in the dish, and it is difficult for him to bring it to his mouth.
16 The sluggard is wiser in his eyes than seven prudent advisers.
17 Like one who seizes a dog by the ears, so is the passerby who becomes inflamed in another's quarrel.
18 Like a madman who hurls flaming darts, arrows, and death,
19 So is a man who has deceived his neighbor and says, «Was I not joking?»
— The rapporteur. —
20 For lack of wood, the fire goes out; remove the gossip, and the quarrel subsides.
21 Coal makes a blaze and wood makes fire: so a quarrelsome man stirs up a discussion.
22 The words of the reporter are like sweets; they go down to the inmost parts of the body.
— The hater. —
23 Like silver dross applied to an earthen vessel, so are burning lips with an evil heart.
24 He who hates disguises himself with his lips, but inwardly he harbors treachery.
25 When he softens his voice, do not trust him, for he has seven abominations in his heart.
26 He may well hide his hatred under dissimulation, but his wickedness will be revealed in the assembly.
27 He who digs a pit falls into it, and the stone will roll back on him who rolls it.
28 A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth causes ruin.
Chapter 27
1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what the day will bring forth following.
2 Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.
3 The stone is heavy and the sand is weighty: heavier than both is the anger of the fool.
4 Fury is cruel and anger impetuous; but who can stand before jealousy?
5. An open rebuke is better than a hidden friendship.
6. A friend's wounds are inspired by loyalty, But the kisses of an enemy are deceptive.
7 The one who is full tramples the honeycomb underfoot, but to the hungry all that is bitter appears soft.
8 Like a bird that wanders far from its nest, so a man wanders far from his place.
9 Oil and perfumes gladden the heart; such gentleness from a friend whose advice comes from the heart.
10 Do not forsake your friend and your father’s friend, and do not enter your brother’s house in the day of your distress; better is a neighbor who is near than a brother who is far away.
11 My son, become wise and gladden my heart, so that I may answer him who insults me.
12 The prudent man sees evil and hides himself; the simple pass by and bear the penalty.
13 Take his garment, for he has answered for another; demand pledges on behalf of foreigners.
14 Blessing one's neighbor aloud and early in the morning is considered a curse.
15 A continuous gutter on a rainy day and a quarrelsome woman are alike.
16 He who restrains it restrains the wind, and his hand grasps oil.
17 Iron sharpens iron; so one man sharpens another.
18 He who looks after his fig tree will eat its fruit, and he who looks after his master will be honored.
19 As In the water the face answers to the face, so too the heart of man answers to man.
20 Sheol and the abyss are not Never Even when satiated, the eyes of man are not Never satiated.
21 The crucible is for silver, and the furnace for gold; let a man likewise experience the praise he receives!
22 Though you pound the fool in a mortar, as one grinds grain with a pestle, his folly would not depart from him.
— Foresight. —
23 Know well the condition of your sheep, apply your attention to your flock;
24 because wealth does not hard not always, nor a crown from age to age.
25 But when the grass has appeared, and the green plants have come forth, and the mountain hay is gathered,
26 you have lambs to clothe you, goats to pay for a field;
27 you have in abundance the milk of goats, for your food and that of your household, and for the maintenance of your servants.
Chapter 28
1 The wicked flee when no one pursues them, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.
2 In a country in revolt, leaders multiply; but with an intelligent and wise man the order continues.
3 A poor man who oppresses the unfortunate is like a violent rain that causes famine.
4 Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, while those who observe it are angry with them.
5 The wicked do not understand what is right, but those who seek Yahweh understand everything.
6 Better is a poor man in his integrity than a man of crooked ways who is rich.
7 He who observes the law is a wise son, but he who feeds debauchers shames his father.
8 He who increases his wealth by interest and usury amasses it for him who is kind to the poor.
9 If anyone turns a deaf ear to the law, even their prayer is an abomination.
10 Whoever leads the upright astray into evil will himself fall into the pit he dug ; But upright men will possess happiness.
11 The rich man is wise in his own eyes, but the poor man who is wise knows him.
12 When the righteous triumph, there is great celebration; but when the wicked rise up, everyone hides.
13 He who conceals his sins will not prosper, but he who THE confess and THE He who quits will obtain mercy.
14 Blessed is the man who always fears the Lord! But he who hardens his heart will fall into misfortune.
15 A roaring lion and a hungry bear are like the wicked one who rules over a poor people.
16 A prince without understanding multiplies oppression, but he who hates greed will have long days.
17 A man covered with another's blood flees to the pit: do not stop him!
18 He who walks in integrity will find salvation, but he who follows crooked ways will fall, never to rise again.
19 He who tills his field will have plenty of bread, but he who chases vain things will have plenty of poverty.
20 A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one who is eager to get rich will not escape sin.
21 It is not good to show partiality; for a piece of bread a man becomes a criminal.
22 The envious man is eager to get rich; he does not know that poverty will come upon him.
23 He who rebukes someone finds more favor in the end than he who flatters with his tongue.
24 Whoever steals from his father and mother and says, «It is not a sin,» is a companion of a robber.
25 A greedy man stirs up quarrels, but he who trusts in the Lord will be satisfied.
26 He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be saved.
27 He who gives to the poor will not want, but he who closes his eyes will be cursed.
28 When the wicked rise up, everyone hides; when they perish, the righteous multiply.
Chapter 29
1 Man worthy of reproaches and that which stiffens the neck will be broken suddenly and without remedy.
2 When the righteous increase, the people rejoice; when the wicked exercise power, the people groan.
3 A man who loves wisdom makes his father glad, but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.
4 A king establishes the land through justice; but he who is greedy of presents ruins him.
5 The man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net under his feet.
6 In the sin of the wicked there is a snare, but the righteous rejoice and joy.
7 The righteous man knows the cause of the poor, but the wicked man does not understand knowledge.
8 The mockers are huffing and puffing fire in the city, but the wise calm the anger.
9 If a wise man argues with a fool, whether he is angry or laughs, there will be no peace.
10 Bloodthirsty men hate the’man integrity, but the men rights protect his life.
11 The fool gives full vent to his passion, but the wise man calms and restrains it.
12 When the prince listens to lying words, all his servants are wicked.
13 The poor and the oppressor meet together; it is Yahweh who enlightens the eyes of both.
14 A king who judges faithfully the poor will have his throne secured forever.
15 The rod and correction give wisdom, but the neglected child at his whim It shames his mother.
16 When the wicked multiply, crime multiplies, but the righteous will see their downfall.
17 Discipline your son, and he will give you rest, and bring delight to your soul.
18 Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint; blessed is he who obeys the law!
19 A slave cannot be corrected by words; even if he understands, he does not obey.
20 If you see a man quick to speak, there is more hope for a fool than for him.
21 If someone treats his slave softly from childhood, the slave will end up thinking of himself as a son.
22 An angry man stirs up quarrels, and a violent man falls into many sins.
23 A man's pride leads to humiliation, but the humble in spirit obtain glory.
24 He who shares with a thief hates his soul; he hears the curse and says nothing.
25 The fear of men carries with it a snare, but he who trusts in Yahweh is safe.
26 Many seek the favor of the prince, but justice comes to each one from the Lord.
27 The wicked man is an abomination to the righteous, and he whose way is upright is an abomination to the wicked.
WORDS OF AGUR.
Chapter 30
1 The words of Agur, son of Jakeh; the judgment. This man said:
— Introduction. —
I got tired to know God, for to know God, and I am at the end of my strength.
2 For I am more stupid than anyone, and I do not have the intelligence of a man.
3 I have not learned wisdom, nor do I know the knowledge of the Holy One.
4 Who ascends to heaven and who descends? Who gathers the wind in his hands? Who binds the waters in his garment? Who establishes all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is the name of his son? Surely you know!
— Word of God. —
5 Every word of God is flawed by fire ; He is a shield for those who take refuge in him.
6 Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.
— Truth and honest livelihood. —
7 I ask two things of you, do not refuse me before I die:
8 Keep falsehood and lying far from me; give me neither poverty, No wealth, but grant me the bread I need:
9 lest, being full, I should not you deny and do not say: "Who is Yahweh?"; and that, having become poor, I do not steal and insult the name of my God.
— Do not slander a servant. —
10 Do not slander a servant to his master, lest he curse you and you bear the penalty.
— Perverse races. —
11 There is a generation that curses its father and does not bless its mother.
12 There is a race that is pure in its own eyes, and which is not washed clean of its defilement.
13 He is a race — how haughty are his eyes, and how high his eyelids!
14 There is a race whose teeth are swords, and molars knives, to devour the unfortunate of above the earth, and the poor among men.
— Insatiable things. —
15 The leech has two daughters: Give! Give! Three things are insatiable, four never say: Enough:
16 Sheol, the barren womb, the earth that is not satisfied with water, and the fire that never says, "Enough!"
— The disrespectful son. —
17 The eye that mocks a father, and scorns obedience to a mother, the ravens of the brook will peck it out, and the young eagles will devour it.
— Mysterious things. —
18 There are three things that are beyond me, and even four that I don't understand:
19 the eagle's footprint in the heavens, the serpent's footprint on the rock, the ship's footprint in the middle of the sea, and the man's footprint with the young woman.
20 This is the way of an adulterous woman: she eats, and wiping her mouth, she says, «I have done nothing wrong.»
— Harmful things. —
21 Under three things the earth trembles, and under four, that’She cannot bear:
22 under a slave when he come to reign, and a fool when he is full of bread,
23 under a woman scorned when she married, and under a servant when she inherits from her mistress.
— Small and wise animals. —
24 There are four very small animals on earth, and they are However very wise:
25 The ants, a people without strength, prepare their food in the summer;
26 The hyraxes, a people without power, place their den in the rocks;
27 The locusts have no king, and they all come out in flocks;
28 you can take the lizard with your hand, and it is located in the palace of kings.
— Beautiful animals. —
29 There are three who have a handsome appearance, and four who have a beautiful gait:
30 The lion, the bravest of animals, shrinking from nothing opponent ;
31 the animal with agile loins, or the goat, and the king, whom no one resists.
— Pride and anger. —
32 If you are foolish enough to let yourself be carried away by pride, and if you even have the thought of it, dishes your hand over your mouth,
33 For pressing milk produces butter, pressing the nose produces blood, and pressing anger produces strife.
WORDS OF KING LAMUEL.
Chapter 31
1 The words of King Lamuel; the sayings by which his mother instructed him:
— Women. —
2. That shall I tell you, My son? What? shall I tell you, son of my womb? What shall I tell you, My son, the object of my desires?
3 Do not give your strength to women, nor your ways to those who destroy kings.
— Wine. —
4 It is not for kings, Lamuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, nor for the mighty to search fermented liqueurs:
5 lest, by drinking, they forget the law, and pervert the justice of all the unfortunate.
6 Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to the one whose soul is filled with bitterness:
7 Let him drink, and forget his misery, and remember no more his sorrows.
— Protection of the weak. —
8 Open your mouth in favor of the mute, for the cause of all the abandoned.
9 Open your mouth, render just judgments, and do justice to the poor and needy.
THE STRONG WOMAN.
10 ALEPH. Who can find a strong woman? Her price wins from afar on that of the pearls.
11 BETH. Her husband's heart trusts in her, and profits will not fail him.
12 GHIMEL. It does him good, and not harm, all the days of his life.
13 DALETH. She searches for wool and linen, and works with her joyful hand.
14 HE. She is like the merchant's ship, she brings her bread from afar.
15 VAV. She rises while it is still night, and provides food for her household, and tasks for her maids.
16 ZAÏN. She thinks of a field, and she acquires it; with the fruit of her hands, she plants a vineyard.
17 HETH. She girded her loins with strength, and she made her arms firm.
18 TETH. She feels that her gain is good; her lamp does not go out during the night.
19 YOD. She puts her hand to the distaff, and her fingers grasp the spindle.
20 CAPH. She extends her hand to the unfortunate, she opens her hand to the needy.
21 LAMED. She does not fear the snow for her house, for all her house is clothed in crimson.
22 MEM. She makes coverings for herself; byssus and purple are her garments.
23 NUN. Her husband is well known at the gates of the city, when he sits with the elders of the country.
24 SAMECH. She makes shirts and sells them, and she supplies belts to the merchant.
25 AÏN. There Strength and grace are her adornment, and she laughs at the future.
26 PHEA. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and good words are on her tongue.
27 TSADÉ. She watches over the paths of her house, and she does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 QOPH. Her sons rise up and proclaim her blessed; her husband gets up and praises him:
29 RESCH. "Many girls have shown themselves to be virtuous; but you surpass them all."«
30 SHIN. Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31 TABH. Give him the fruit of his hands, and let his works proclaim his praise at the gates of the city.
