Chapter 1
1 After several people have undertaken to compose an account of things of which we are fully convinced,
2 according to what was handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word;
3 I too have resolved, after applying myself to knowing exactly all things from the beginning, to write you a continuous account of them, excellent Théophile,
4 so that you may recognize the certainty of the teachings you have received.
5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah; and his wife, who was one of the daughters of Aaron, was named Elizabeth.
6 Both of them were righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.
7 They had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.
8 Now while Zechariah was serving as priests before God, according to the order of his division,
9 He was chosen by lot, according to the custom observed by the priests, to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and offer incense there.
10 And all the multitude of the people were outside praying at the hour of incense.
11 But an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.
12 When Zechariah saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
13 But the angel said to him, »Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard; your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call him John.
14 He will be a source of joy and gladness for you, and many will rejoice at his birth;
15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He will drink neither wine nor anything intoxicating, for he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb.
16 He will convert many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God;
17 And he himself will go before him, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a perfect people.«
18 Zechariah said to the angel, »How will I know that that will be Because I am old, and my wife is advanced in years.«
19 The angel answered him, »I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God; I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.
20 And behold, you will be mute and unable to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.«
21 However, the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they wondered why he was staying so long in the sanctuary.
22 But when he went out, he could not speak to them, and they understood that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary, which he made them understand by signs; and he remained mute.
23 When the days of his ministry were completed, he went home.
24 Some time later, Elizabeth, his wife, conceived, and she remained hidden for five months, saying:
25 »This is the grace the Lord has shown me, on the day he looked upon me to take away my disgrace among men.«
26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,
27 to a virgin who was betrothed to a man of the house of David, named Joseph, and the virgin's name was Married.
28 The angel came to her and said, »Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you; blessed are you among women.«
29 Married Having caught sight of him, she was troubled by his words, and she wondered what this greeting could mean.
30 The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.".
31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.
32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever.,
33 and his kingdom will have no end.«
34 Married He said to the angel, »How can this be, since I am a virgin?«
35 The angel answered her, »The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.”.
36 Even Elizabeth, your relative, has conceived a son in her old age, and this is now her sixth month, she who is called barren:
37 For nothing will be impossible with God.«
38 Married Then she said, "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.
39 In those days, Married Getting up, he went with haste to the land of the mountains, to a city in Judah.
40 And she entered the house of Zechariah, and greeted Elizabeth.
41 Now, as soon as Elizabeth heard the greeting of Married, The child leaped in her womb, and she was filled with the Holy Spirit.
42 And raising her voice, she cried out: »Blessed are you among the people of the kingdom of heaven.” women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
43 And why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For no sooner had your voice reached my ears when you greeted me than my child in my womb leaped for joy.
45 Blessed is she who believed, for what was spoken to her from the Lord will be fulfilled!«
46 And Married said:
»"My soul glorifies the Lord.".
47 And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 Because he has looked upon the lowliness of his servant.
Indeed, from now on all generations will call me blessed.,
49 Because he, who is mighty, has done great things in me,
And whose name is holy,
50 And of which mercy extends from age to age,
On those who fear him.
51 He displayed the strength of his arm;
He has dispelled those who were proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
52 He overthrew the powerful from their thrones,
And he raised the little ones;
53 He has filled the hungry with good things,
And he sent the rich away empty-handed.
54 He has cared for his servant Israel,
Remembering his mercy,
55 (As he had promised to our fathers)
To Abraham and his descendants, forever.«
56 Married stayed with Elisabeth for about three months, and then returned home.
57 However, the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she gave birth to a son.
58 Her neighbors and relatives, having heard that the Lord had shown mercy to her, rejoiced with her.
59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they named him Zechariah after his father.
60 But his mother spoke up: »No,« she said, “but he will be called John.”
61 They said to him, »There is no one in your family who is called by that name.«
62 And they asked his father by sign what he wanted to be named.
63 Having asked for a writing tablet, he wrote: »His name is John»; and they were all amazed.
64 At that same instant his mouth opened, his tongue untied ; And he spoke, blessing God.
65 Fear seized all the inhabitants of the surrounding area, and all over the mountains of Judea, these wonders were recounted.
66 All who heard about it pondered these things in their hearts, saying, »What then will this child become? For the hand of the Lord was with him.«
67 And Zechariah, his father, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he prophesied, saying:
68 » Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
Because he visited and redeemed his people.
69 And that he has raised up a Force to save us,
In the house of David, his servant,
70 (As he promised through the mouth of his saints,
From his prophets, from ancient times).
71 To save us from our enemies
And the power of all those who hate us.
72 In order to exercise his mercy towards our fathers.
And to remember his holy covenant;
73 According to the oath he swore to Abraham, our father,
[74] To grant us that,
74 without fear,
Freed from the power of our enemies,
[75] We served him,
75 with holiness and justice
Worthy of his gaze, every day of our lives.
76 As for you, child, you will be called prophet of the Most High,
For you will walk before the face of the Lord,
To prepare the way for him;
77 To teach his people to recognize salvation
In the remission of their sins:
78 Through the tender mercy of our God,
Through which the rising sun visited us from above,
79 To give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
To guide our steps along the path of peace.«
80 Now the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he remained in the wilderness until the day of his appearance before Israel.
Chapter 2
1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the earth should be registered.
2 This first census took place while Quirinius was in command of the Syria.
3 And all went to be registered, each in his own town.
4 Joseph went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, called Bethlehem, because he was of David's house and family,
5 to be counted with Married his wife, who was pregnant.
6 Now while they were there, the time came for her to give birth.
7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son, wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 There were shepherds in the vicinity who were spending the night in the fields, watching over their flocks.
9 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the radiance of the glory of the Lord surrounded them, and they were filled with great fear.
10 But the angel said to them, »Do not be afraid, for I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
12 And this will be a sign to you: You will find a newborn baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.«
13 At that very moment, a multitude of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying:
14 » Glory to God in the highest!
And, on earth, peace to men,
Object of divine benevolence!«
15 When the angelsAs they ascended to heaven, having left them, the shepherds said to one another: "Let's go on to Bethlehem, Let us now consider this event which has occurred, and which the Lord has made known to us.«
16 They went there in haste, and found Married, Joseph, and the newborn lying in the manger.
17 After seeing him, they made public the revelation that had been given to them concerning this Child.
18 And all who heard them were amazed at what the shepherds told them.
19 Gold Married He carefully preserved all these things, pondering them in his heart.
20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had seen and heard, just as they had been told.
21 When the eight days were completed, for the circumcision of the Child, he was called Jesus, the name which the angel had given him before he was conceived in the womb.
22 Then, when the days of their purification were completed, according to the law of Moses, Married And Joseph brought the Child to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.,
23 according to what is written in the law of the Lord: »Every firstborn male shall be consecrated to the Lord»;
24 and to offer as a sacrifice, as prescribed by the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two small pigeons.
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon; he was a righteous man and a worshiper of God, who was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
26 The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
27 So he came into the temple, moved by the Spirit. And when the parents brought in the infant Jesus to observe the legal customs concerning him,
28 He too took him in his arms and blessed God, saying:
29 »Now, O Master, you let your servant go.”
In peace, according to your word;
30 Since my eyes have seen your salvation,
31 Which you have prepared in the sight of all peoples:
32 Light to dispel the darkness of the nations
And glory to Israel, your people.«
33 The Child's father and mother were amazed at the things that were said about him.
34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Married, his mother: "This Child is in the world for the fall and the resurrection of a great number in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted;
35 A sword will pierce your own soul; — and so the thoughts hidden in the hearts of many will be revealed.«
36 There was also a prophetess, Anna, daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher; she was very old, having lived seven years with her husband since her virginity.
37 She remained a widow, and reached the age of eighty-four, yet she did not leave the temple, serving God night and day with fasting and prayer.
38 She too, coming up at that hour, began to praise the Lord and to speak about the Child to all those in Jerusalem who were waiting for the redemption.
39 When they had done everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to Nazareth, their own town.
40 And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon him.
41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Passover festival.
42 When he reached his twelfth year, they went up there, according to the custom of that festival;
43 And when they returned, the days of the festival having passed, the Child Jesus remained in the city, without his parents having noticed.
44 Thinking that he was with their traveling companions, they walked for a whole day, then they looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances.
45 Not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him.
46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and questioning them.
47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.
48 When they saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said to him, »My child, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been searching for you anxiously.«
49 And he answered them, »Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s business?«
50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
51 So he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. And his mother treasured all these things in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
Chapter 3
1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, Philip his brother tetrarch of Ituraea and the land of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene;
2 In the days of the high priests Annas and Caiaphas, the word of the Lord came to John, son of Zechariah, in the wilderness.
3 And he went throughout all the region of the Jordan, preaching repentance for the remission of sins,
4 as it is written in the book of the oracles of the prophet Isaiah: »A voice heard in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low; the crooked roads shall become straight, and the rough ones smooth.
6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.«
7 He said to those who were coming in large numbers to be baptized by him, »Brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Therefore bear worthy fruits of repentance, and do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘Abraham is our father,’ for I tell you that out of these very stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham.
9 The axe is already at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.«
10 And the people asked him, »What then should be done?«
11 He answered them, »Whoever has two tunics should give one to the one who has none, and whoever has food should do likewise.«
12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, »Teacher, what should we do?«
13 He told them, »Do not demand anything beyond what you are commanded.«
14 Some soldiers also questioned him, saying, »And what should we do?» He replied, »Refrain from all violence and fraud, and be content with your pay.«
15 As the people waited expectantly, and all wondered in their hearts whether John might be the Christ,
16 John said to them all, »I baptize you with water; but he who is more powerful than I is coming, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
17 His hand holds the winnowing fork, and he will clear his threshing floor, and he will gather the wheat into his barn, and he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.«
18 With these exhortations, and many others like them, he proclaimed the good news to the people.
19 But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, his brother's wife, and all the evil he had done,
20 He added this crime to all the others, and imprisoned John in prison.
21 Now when all the people had just been baptized, Jesus also was baptized, and while he was praying, the heavens were opened,
22 And the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form, like a dove, and a voice came from heaven, saying, »You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.«
23 Jesus was about thirty years old when he began his ministry ; He was, as was believed, the son of Joseph, the son of Eli.,
24 sons of Matthat, son of Levi, son of Melchi, son of Janneh, son of Joseph,
25 sons of Mattathias, son of Amos, son of Nahum, son of Hesli, son of Naggé,
26 sons of Maath, sons of Mattathias, sons of Shemei, sons of Josech, sons of Judah,
27 sons of Joanan, son of Resa, son of Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, son of Neri,
28 sons of Melchi, son of Addi, son of Cosam, son of Elmadam, son of Her,
29 sons of Jesus, sons of Eliezer, sons of Jorim, sons of Matthat, sons of Levi,
30 sons of Simeon, son of Judah, son of Joseph, son of Jonan, son of Eliakim,
31 sons of Melea, sons of Menna, sons of Mattatha, sons of Nathan, sons of David,
32 sons of Jesse, sons of Obed, sons of Boaz, sons of Salmon, sons of Nahshon,
33 sons of Amminadab, son of Aram, son of Hezron, son of Perez, son of Judah,
34 sons of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham, son of Terah, son of Nahor,
35 sons of Sarug, son of Reu, son of Peleg, son of Eber, son of Salé,
36 sons of Cainan, son of Arphaxad, son of Shem, son of Noah, son of Lamech,
37 sons of Methuselah, son of Enoch, son of Jared, son of Malaleel, son of Cainan,
38 sons of Enos, sons of Seth, sons of Adam, sons of God.
Chapter 4
1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
2 For forty days, he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over, he was hungry.
3 Then the devil said to him, »If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.«
4 Jesus answered him, »It is written: «Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word of God.’”
5 And the devil took him up to a high mountain and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the earth,
6 and said to him, »I will give you all this power and all the glory of these kingdoms; for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I want.
7 If you therefore bow down before me, she shall be entirely yours.«
8 Jesus answered him, »It is written: «You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’”
9 The devil took him again to Jerusalem, and having placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, he said to him, »If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here.
10 For it is written: “His angels have been commanded concerning you to guard you,”,
11 and they will take you into their hands, lest your foot strike against the stone.«
12 Jesus answered him, »It is written: «You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
13 After he had thus tempted him in every way, the devil left him for a while.
14 Then Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and his fame spread throughout all the surrounding country.
15 He taught in their synagogues, and all proclaimed his praise.
16 Having come to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went, according to his custom, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.
17 He was given the book of the prophet Isaiah ; And having unrolled it, he found the place where it was written:
18 »The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, and he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted,
19 To proclaim liberty to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.«
20 Having rolled up the book, he gave it back to the minister and sat down; and all in the synagogue had their eyes fixed on him.
21 Then he began to say to them, »Today your ears have heard the fulfillment of this oracle.«
22 And all bore witness to him, and marveling at the gracious words that came from his mouth, they said, »Is not this the son of Joseph?«
23 And he said to them, »No doubt you will cite to me this saying: «Physician, heal yourself!’ and you will say to me: ‘The great things we have heard you did in Capernaum, do them here in your homeland.’”
24 And he added: »Truly I tell you, no prophet is well received in his hometown.
25 I tell you truly, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up for three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout the land;
26 And yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath, in the land of Sidon.
27 Likewise, there were many lepers in Israel in the days of the prophet Elisha; yet not one of them was healed, but Naaman the Syrian.«
28 When they heard this, they were all filled with anger in the synagogue.
29 And getting up, they drove him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the mountain on which their city was built, to throw him down.
30 But he, passing through the midst of them, went away.
31 He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and there he taught on the Sabbath days.
32 And his teaching astonished them, because he spoke with authority.
33 There was a man in the synagogue possessed by an unclean demon, who cried out with a loud voice,
34 saying, »Leave me alone! What do we have to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.«
35 But Jesus said sternly to him, »Be quiet, and come out of him!» And the demon threw him to the ground in the midst of the assembly and came out of him without harming him.
36 And they were all amazed and said to one another, »What is this teaching? With authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!«
37 And his fame spread throughout the land.
38 Then Jesus got up and left the synagogue and went to Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they begged him to help her.
39 Bending over the sick woman, he commanded the fever, and the fever left her; and having risen at once, she began to serve them.
40 When the sun had set, all those who had sick people in their homes, whatever their illness, brought them to him; and Jesus laid his hand on each one of them and healed them.
41 Demons also came out of many, crying out, »You are the Son of God!» And he rebuked them to be quiet, because they knew that he was the Christ.
42 As soon as day broke, he went out and left for a deserted place. A crowd of people went looking for him, and when they came to him, they wanted to keep him from leaving them.
43 But he said to them, »I must proclaim the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is what I was sent for.«
44 And Jesus preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
Chapter 5
1 Now one day, pressed by the crowd who wanted to hear the word of God, he was standing on the shore of the Sea of Galilee,
2 He saw two boats moored near the shore; the fishermen had gone ashore to wash their nets.
3 So he got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the shore; then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, »Put out into the deep sea, and let down your nets for a catch.«
5 Simon answered him, »Master, we have worked all night and caught nothing; but because you say so, I will let down the nets.«
6 When they had cast it, they caught such a large quantity of fish that their net began to break.
7 And they signaled to their companions, who were in the other boat, to come to their aid. They came, and they filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' feet, saying, "Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinner!"»
9 For terror had seized him and all those who were with him, because of the catch of fish they had made;
10 The same was true of James and John, sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. And Jesus said to Simon, »Do not be afraid, for from now on you will be catching men.«
11 Immediately, they brought their boats ashore, left everything, and followed him.
12 While he was in a town, a man covered with leprosy saw Jesus and fell with his face to the ground and begged him, »Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.«
13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched him, saying, »I do will it; be healed!» And immediately his leprosy disappeared.
14 And he commanded him not to tell anyone; but: »Go, he said, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your healing what Moses prescribed, to attest to it to the people.«
15 His fame spread more and more, and people came in large numbers to hear him and to be cured of their illnesses.
16 As for him, he would withdraw to deserts and pray.
17 One day while he was teaching, there was someone sitting there around him, Pharisees and teachers of the Law came from all the villages of Galilee, as well as from Judea and Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord was manifested by healings.
18 And behold, some men were carrying a paralyzed man on a bed, and were trying to bring him in and put him before him.
19 And finding no way to do so because of the crowd, they went up onto the roof and, through the tiles, lowered the sick man with his mat into the midst of everyone, in front of Jesus.
20 Seeing their faith, he said, »Man, your sins are forgiven.«
21 Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason and say, »Who is this who utters blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?«
22 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, spoke to them and said, »What are you thinking in your hearts?
23 Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'?
24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins, he said to the paralytic, «I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”
25 At once, he got up in front of them, took the bed on which he had been lying, and went home, praising God.
26 And they were all amazed; they glorified God, and, filled with awe, they said, »We have seen marvelous things today.«
27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax collector's booth. He said to him, »Follow me.«
28 And he, leaving everything, got up and followed him.
29 Levi gave a great feast for him in his house; and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were at table with them.
30 The Pharisees and their scribes murmured and said to his disciples, »Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and the fishermen ?«
31 Jesus answered them, »It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
32 I have not come to call the righteous to repentance, but the fishermen.«
33 Then they said to him, »Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast and pray often, but yours eat and drink?«
34 He answered them, »Can you make the friends of the Bridegroom fast while the Bridegroom is with them?
35 The days will come when the Bridegroom will be taken away from them; they will fast on those days.«
36 He also offered them this comparison: "No one puts a piece of a new garment on an old one: otherwise the new one will be torn, and the piece of the new one will not fit the old garment well.
37 No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and spill out, and the skins will be ruined.
38 But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both will keep.
39 And no one, after drinking old wine, immediately wants new wine; for they say, «Old wine is better.”
Chapter 6
1 One Sabbath day, says the second-first, as Jesus was passing through the grain fields, his disciples picked some ears of grain, and, crushing them in their hands, ate them.
2 Some Pharisees said to them, »Why are you doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath day?«
3 Jesus answered them, »Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
4 How did he enter the house of God, and take the consecrated bread, eat it and give it to those who were with him, although it is permitted only for the priests to eat it?«
5 And he added, »The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.«
6 On another Sabbath, Jesus entered the synagogue and was teaching. And a man was there whose right hand was withered.
7 Now the scribes and the Pharisees were observing this, to see if he performed healings on the Sabbath day, in order to have a pretext to accuse him.
8 But he, perceiving their thoughts, said to the man with the withered hand, »Get up and stand in the middle»; and he got up and stood.
9 Then Jesus said to them, »I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to take it away?«
10 Then, looking around at them all, he said to the man, »Stretch out your hand.» He stretched it out, and his hand was restored.
11 But they, filled with madness, were plotting what they might do to Jesus.
12 In those days he withdrew to the mountain to pray, and he spent the whole night praying to God.
13 When day came, he called his disciples to him, and chose twelve of them, whom he named apostles:
14 Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,
15 Matthew and Thomas, James, son of Alphaeus, and Simon, called the Zealot,
16 Jude, brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
17 Having gone down with them, he stood on a plateau, where there was a crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, from Jerusalem and from all the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon.
18 They had come to hear him and to be healed of their illnesses. Those who were tormented by unclean spirits were healed.
19 And all these people sought to touch him, because a virtue emanated from him that healed them all.
20 Then, looking up at his disciples, he said to them:
»Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of heaven!”
21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
22 Blessed are you when people hate you, exclude you from their company, heap reproach upon you, and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven: for thus did their fathers treat the prophets.
24 But woe to you!, You are rich, for you have your consolation!
25 Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry! Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep!
26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets!
27 But I tell you who are listening: Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you.
28 Bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you.
29 If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also; and if someone takes away your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic as well.
30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.
31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.
32 If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? The fishermen They love those who love them.
33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? The fishermen They do the same.
34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full.
35 As for you, love your enemies, do good, and lend without expecting to get anything back; and your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, who is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
37 Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and it will be forgiven you.
38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.«
39 He made this comparison to them: »Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?”
40 The disciple is not above the teacher; but every disciple, when he has completed his training, will be like his teacher.
41 Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, and do not notice the plank that is in your own eye?
42 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
43 For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit;
44 Each tree is recognized by its fruit. Figs are not picked from thorns; grapes are not cut from brambles.
45 A good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil treasure of his heart; for the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
46 Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say?
47 Everyone who comes to me and listens to my words and puts them into practice, I will show you who he is like.
48 He is like a man building a house, who dug down long beforehand and laid its foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent crashed against that house, but could not shake it, because it had its foundation on rock.
49 But the one who hears and does not put into practice is like a man who built his house on the ground without a foundation; the torrent came and struck it, and it immediately fell down, and great was the ruin of that house.«
Chapter 7
1 After he had finished saying all these things to the people, Jesus entered Capernaum.
2 Now a centurion had a sick servant who was about to die, and he loved him very much.
3 When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his servant.
4 When they came to Jesus, they begged him earnestly, saying, »He deserves that you do this for him;
5 because he loves our nation, and he has even built our synagogue.«
6 So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent some of his friends to say to him, »Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof;
7 So I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you; but say the word, and my servant shall be healed.
8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, «Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and that one, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.«
9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at the man, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, »Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.«
10 Upon their return to the house of the centurion, The messengers found the servant who had been ill healed.
11 Some time later, Jesus went to a town called Nain; many disciples and a large crowd were traveling with him.
12 As he approached the city gate, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and many people from the city were accompanying her.
13 When the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, »Do not weep.«
14 And approaching, he touched the coffin, the bearers having stopped; then he said, »Young man, I command you, get up.«
15 Immediately the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16 They were all filled with awe, and they glorified God, saying, »A great prophet has appeared among us, and God has visited his people.«
17 And this word spoken about him spread throughout all Judea and all the surrounding country.
18 When John's disciples had reported all these things to him,
19 He called two of them and sent them to Jesus to say, »Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?«
20 So they came to him and said, »John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, «Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”
21 — At that very moment, Jesus healed a great number of people afflicted by disease, infirmity, or evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind.
22 Then he answered the messengers, »Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor are evangelized.
23 Blessed is the one who is not offended by me!«
24 When John’s messengers had left, Jesus began to speak to the people about John: »What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
25 What did you go out into the desert to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? But those who wear fine clothes and live in luxury are in royal palaces.
26 So what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
27 It is about him that it is written: I am sending my messenger before your face, to go before you and to prepare the way for you.
28 For I tell you, among those born of women there is no prophet greater than John the Baptist; but the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
29 All the people who heard him, even the tax collectors, justified God by being baptized with the baptism of John,
30 while the Pharisees and the teachers of the law rejected God’s purpose for them by not being baptized by him.«
31 »To whom then,” the Lord continued, “shall I compare the people of this generation? To whom are they like?”
32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace, calling to one another and saying, “We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang dirges for you, and you did not mourn.”.
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, He has a demon.
34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.
35 But Wisdom has been vindicated by all her children.«
36 A Pharisee invited Jesus to eat with him, so he went into his house and sat down at the table.
37 And behold, a woman who was leading a dissolute life in the city, having learned that he was reclining at table in the house of the Pharisee, brought an alabaster jar full of perfume;
38 and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet them with her tears and to wipe them with the hair of her head, and she kissed them and anointed them with perfume.
39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, »If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him, and that she is a sinner.«
40 Then Jesus spoke up and said to him, »Simon, I have something to tell you.» »Teacher,« he said, “speak.”
41 » A creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii and the other fifty.
42 Since they could not pay their debt, he forgave them both. Which of them will love him more?«
43 Simon answered, »I suppose the one to whom he forgave the larger sum.» Jesus said to him, »You have judged correctly.«
44 And turning to the woman, he said to Simon, »Do you see this woman? I entered your house, and you did not pour water on my feet, but she has wet them with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
45 You did not give me a kiss; but she, from the moment I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet.
46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she anointed my feet with perfume.
47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven her—for she loved much. But whoever is forgiven little loves little.«
48 Then he said to the woman, »Your sins are forgiven.«
49 And those who were at the table with him began to say to themselves, »Who is this who even forgives sins?«
50 But Jesus said to the woman, »Your faith has saved you; go in peace.«
Chapter 8
1 Then Jesus traveled through the towns and villages, preaching and announcing the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him,
2 as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Married, called Magdala, from which seven demons had come out;
3 Joanna, wife of Chusa, Herod's steward, Susanna, and many others, who supported him out of their resources.
4 A large crowd having gathered, and people having come to him from various towns, Jesus said in a parable:
5 "The sower went out to scatter his seed; and as he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air ate it up.
6 Another part fell on the stone, and, as soon as it was lifted up, it dried, because it had no moisture.
7 Another part fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it.
8 Another part fell on good soil, and when it sprouted, it produced a hundredfold. Speaking these words, he said aloud, »He who has ears to hear, let him hear.»
9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant:
10 »To you,” he said, “the knowledge of the mystery of the kingdom of God has been given, but to others, it is announced in parables, so that, seeing, they do not see, and hearing, they do not understand.
11 This is what this parable means: The seed is the word of God.
12 Those along the way are the ones who hear the word; but then the devil comes and takes it away from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.
13 Those in whom it is sown on the rock are those who, hearing the word, receive it with joy; but they have no root: they believe for a while, and in the hour of testing they fall away.
14 What fell on the thorns represents those who, having heard the word, are gradually choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and they do not reach maturity.
15 Finally, what fell on good soil represents those who, having heard the word with a good and excellent heart, keep it and bear fruit by perseverance.
16 No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed; but they put it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light.
17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing secret that will not eventually be known and brought to light.
18 Therefore, be careful how you listen; for to everyone who has, more will be given, and from him who does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away.«
19 Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they could not get in because of the crowd.
20 Someone came and told him, »Your mother and brothers are outside, and they want to see you.«
21 He answered them, »My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and put it into practice.«
22 One day, Jesus got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, »Let us cross to the other side of the lake.» And they set out to sea.
23 While they were sailing, he fell asleep; and a squall of wind came down upon the lake, their boat was filling with water, and they were in peril.
24 So they came to him and woke him up, saying, »Master! Master! We are perishing!» He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they calmed down, and there was a complete calm.
25 Then he said to them, »Where is your faith?» They were filled with fear and amazement, saying to one another, »Who then is this, that he commands the wind and the sea, and they obey him?«
26 They then landed in the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.
27 When Jesus stepped ashore, a man from the town who had long been possessed by demons came to meet him; he wore no clothes and had no other dwelling than the tombs.
28 As soon as he saw Jesus, he cried out and came to his feet, saying in a loud voice, »What do you have to do with me, Jesus, Son of God Most High? Please, don’t torment me.«
29 For Jesus commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times the spirit had seized him, and although he was kept bound with chains and shackles on his feet, it broke his bonds, and the demon drove him out into deserted places.
30 Jesus asked him, »What is your name?» He said to him, »My name is Legion»; for many demons had entered into him.
31 And these demons begged Jesus not to command them to go into the abyss.
32 Now there was a large herd of pigs grazing on the mountain; they begged him to allow them to go in, and he allowed them.
33 So they came out of the man and went into the pigs; and the herd, running, rushed down the steep slopes into the lake, and drowned.
34 At this sight, the guards fled, and carried the news throughout the city and the countryside.
35 The people went out to see what had happened: they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at his feet, clothed and sane; and they were filled with fear.
36 Those who had witnessed it also told them how the demoniac had been delivered.
37 Then all the inhabitants of the country of the Gerasenes begged him to leave them, because they were filled with great fear. So Jesus got into the boat to return.
38 Now the man from whom the demons had gone out begged him to admit him to his side; but Jesus sent him away, saying:
39 »Go back to your house and tell everyone how much God has done for you.» So he went away and told all over town what Jesus had done for him.
40 When Jesus returned, he was welcomed by the people, for they were all waiting for him.
41 And behold, a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, begging him to come into his house,
42 because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, who was dying.
As Jesus was going there, and was pressed by the crowd,
43 A woman who had suffered from a flow of blood for twelve years, and who had spent all her money on doctors, without any of them being able to cure her,
44 approached him from behind and touched the tassel of his coat. Instantly his bleeding stopped.
45 And Jesus said, »Who touched me?» They all denied it, but Peter and those with him said, »Master, the crowd is surrounding you and pressing against you, and you are asking, «Who touched me?’”
46 But Jesus said, »Someone touched me, for I felt power go out from me.«
47 When she saw that she had been discovered, the woman came trembling and fell at his feet, and told everyone why she had touched him, and how she had been healed instantly.
48 And Jesus said to her, »Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace.«
49 While he was still speaking, someone from the synagogue leader's house came to him and said, "Your daughter is dead; don't trouble the teacher."»
50 When Jesus heard this, he replied to the father, »Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be saved.«
51 When he arrived at the house, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, James and John, with the child’s father and mother.
52 Now all were weeping and wailing for her, and Jesus said, »Do not weep; she is not dead, but asleep.«
53 And they mocked him, knowing full well that she was dead.
54 But he took her by the hand and said in a loud voice, »Child, get up!«
55 And her spirit returned to her, and she got up at once; and Jesus ordered that she be given something to eat.
56 His parents were overjoyed, but he instructed them not to tell anyone what had happened.
Chapter 9
1 Having gathered the Twelve together, Jesus gave them power and authority over all demons, and the power to heal diseases.
2 And he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick,
3 and he said to them, »Take nothing for the journey, neither staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money, and do not have two tunics.
4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that place.
5 If they refuse to receive you, leave that city and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.«
6 The disciples went out and traveled from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.
7 However, Herod the tetrarch heard about all that Jesus was doing, and he did not know what to think;
8 For some were saying, »John has risen from the dead»; others, »Elijah has appeared»; and still others, »One of the ancient prophets has risen.«
9 Herod said, »As for John, I had him beheaded. Now who is this man about whom I hear such things?» And he sought to see him.
10 When the apostles returned, they told Jesus everything they had done. He took them with him and withdrew by himself to a deserted place near a town called Bethsaida.
11 When the people heard about it, they followed him; Jesus welcomed them, and he spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and he healed those who needed it.
12 As the day was drawing to a close, the Twelve came to him and said, »Send the people away so that they may spread out into the surrounding villages and hamlets and find shelter and food, for we are here in a desolate place.«
13 He answered them, »You give them something to eat.» They said to him, »We only have five loaves of bread and two fish—unless perhaps we ourselves go and buy enough to feed all these people!«
14 For there were about five thousand men. Jesus said to his disciples, »Have them sit down in groups of fifty.«
15 They obeyed him and made them sit down.
16 Then Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks, broke them and gave them to his disciples to serve the people.
17 They all ate and were satisfied, and of the leftover pieces they picked up twelve baskets.
18 One day, as he was praying in a solitary place, with his disciples with him, he asked them this question: »Who do the crowds say I am?«
19 They replied, »Some say John the Baptist; others Elijah; and still others, that one of the ancient prophets has risen from the dead.”
20 »And you,» he asked them, «who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”
21 But he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone.
22 »The Son of Man must,« he added, “suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”
23 Then he said to them all, »If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.
24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will save it.
25 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit himself?
26 And if anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
27 Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.«
28 About eight days after he had said these things, Jesus took with him Peter, James and John, and went up on the mountain to pray.
29 While he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white.
30 And behold, two men were talking with him: they were Moses and Elijah,
31 appearing in glory; they were talking about his death which was to take place in Jerusalem.
32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy; but when they became awake, they saw the glory of Jesus, and the two men who were with him.
33 As they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, »Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.« He did not know what he was saying.
34 As he spoke these words, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and the disciples were terrified as they entered the cloud.
35 And a voice came from the cloud, saying, »This is my beloved Son; listen to him.«
36 While the voice was speaking, Jesus was alone. The disciples remained silent, and at that time they told no one anything about what they had seen.
37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Jesus.
38 And a man cried out from the midst of the crowd, »Teacher, I beg you, look upon my son, for he is my only child.
39 A spirit seizes him, and immediately he cries out; the spirit agitates him violently, making him foam at the mouth, and scarcely leaves him after having bruised him all over.
40 I asked your disciples to drive him out, but they could not.
41 «O unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long will I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”
42 And as the child approached, the demon threw him to the ground and shook him violently.
43 But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the child, and gave him back to his father.
44 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.
While everyone was marveling at what Jesus was doing, he said to his disciples, »Listen carefully to this: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.«
45 But they did not understand this saying; it was veiled to them, so that they did not have the understanding, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
46 Now a thought crept into their minds, as to which of them was the greatest.
47 Jesus, seeing the thoughts of their hearts, took a little child and laid him by his side,
48 and said to them, »Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For the one who is least among you all is the one who is great.«
49 John answered, »Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he was not one of us.”
50 «Do not stop him,” Jesus replied, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”
51 When the days of his being taken up from the world drew near, he resolved to go to Jerusalem,
52 He sent messengers ahead of him, who set out and entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his arrival;
53 But the inhabitants refused to receive him, because he was heading towards Jerusalem.
54 When his disciples James and John saw this, they said, »Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?«
55 Jesus turned around and rebuked them, saying, »You do not know what kind of spirit you are of!”
56 The Son of Man did not come to destroy lives, but to save them.» And they went to another village.
57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, »I will follow you wherever you go.«
58 Jesus answered him, »Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.«
59 He said to another, »Follow me.» This man replied, »Lord, first let me go and bury my father.«
60 But Jesus said to him, »Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.«
61 Another said to him, »I will follow you, Lord, but first let me go back and say goodbye to those in my household.«
62 Jesus answered him, »No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.«
Chapter 10
1 After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into all the cities and places where he himself was to go.
2 He told them, »The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.”.
3 Go: behold, I am sending you out like lambs in the midst of wolves.
4 Carry no purse, no bag, no shoes, and greet no one on the road.
5 In whatever house you enter, first say: Peace to this house!
6 And if there is a child of peace there, your peace will rest upon him; if not, it will return to you.
7 Stay in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they have, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move from one house to another.
8 In whatever town you enter, if you are received, eat what is offered to you;
9 Heal the sick who are there, and tell them: The kingdom of God is near to you.
10 But whatever town you enter, if they do not welcome you, go into the public squares and say:
11 Even the dust of your city, which has clung to us, we wipe off against you; yet know this, that the kingdom of God is near.
12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for this city.
13 Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if miracles who were made in your midst, had been made in Tyre and Sidon, they would have long ago done penance, sitting under hair shirts and ashes.
14 Therefore, at the judgment, it will be less severe for Tyre and Sidon than for you.
15 And you, Capernaum, who exalt yourself to heaven, you will be brought down to hell.
16 Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever despises you despises me; and whoever despises me despises the one who sent me.«
17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, »Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name!«
18 He answered them, »I saw Satan falling like lightning from heaven.
19 Behold, I have given you authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and all the power of the enemy, and it shall not harm you at all.
20 Only do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.«
21 At that very moment, he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, »I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and prudent, and revealed them to little children. Yes, I bless you, O Father, because it has pleased you thus.
22 All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows what the Son is except the Father, and what the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.«
23 And turning to his disciples, he said privately, »Blessed are the eyes that see what you see!
24 For I tell you, many prophets and kings longed to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.«
25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to test him, saying, »Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?«
26 Jesus said to him, »What is written in the Law? How do you read it?«
27 He replied, »You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.«
28 Jesus said to him, »You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.«
29 But this man, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, »And who is my neighbor?«
30 Jesus continued: »A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho; he fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, and having beaten him, departed, leaving him half dead.
31 Now it happened that a priest was going down the same road; he saw this man and passed on by.
32 Likewise, a Levite, having come to that place, approached, saw him, and passed on by.
33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came near him, and when he saw him, he was moved with compassion.
34 He approached him, bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
35 The next day, he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, “Take care of this man, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I return.”.
36 Which of these three do you think was a neighbor of the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?«
37 The doctor replied, »The one who practiced mercy to him.» And Jesus said to him, »You also go and do likewise.«
38 While they were on their way, Jesus entered a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.
39 She had a sister, named Married, who, having seat at the Lord's feet, listening to his word,
40 While Martha was busy with the various chores, she stopped and said, »Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me.«
41 The Lord answered her, »Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things.
42 Only one is needed. Married He has chosen the better part, which will not be taken from him.«
Chapter 11
1 One day, while Jesus was praying in a certain place, when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, »Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.«
2 He said to them, »When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.
3 Give us today our daily bread,
4 And forgive us our trespasses, for we ourselves forgive everyone who trespasses against us; and lead us not into temptation.«
5 He also said to them, »If any of you has a friend and goes to him in the middle of the night saying, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,’”,
6 because a friend of mine who is travelling has arrived at my house, and I have nothing to offer him;
7 and that from inside the house, the other replies: Do not bother me; the door is already closed, my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up to give you anything:
8 I tell you, even if he would not get up to give him anything because he is his friend, he will get up because of his persistence and give him as much bread as he needs.
9 And I tell you: Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.
10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
11 Which of you fathers, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish?
12 Or, if he asks him for an egg, will he give him a scorpion?
13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?«
14 Jesus was driving out a demon, and the demon was mute. When the demon had left, the mute man spoke, and the people were amazed.
15 But some of them said, »It is by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that he casts out demons.«
16 Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven.
17 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, »Every kingdom divided against itself will be destroyed, and houses will fall one upon another.”.
18 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebub that I drive out demons.
19 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.
20 But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
21 When a strong, well-armed man guards the entrance to his house, his possessions are safe.
22 But if someone stronger comes and defeats him, he will take away all the weapons in which he trusted, and divide his spoils.
23 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
24 When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, it goes through dry places seeking rest. Not finding any, it says, “I will return to my house from which I came.”.
25 And when he arrives, he finds it cleaned and adorned.
26 Then he goes away, taking with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they go in and dwell there, and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.«
27 As he was speaking, a woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you suckled!"»
28 Jesus replied, »Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!«
29 The people gathered in crowds, and he began to say, "This generation is a wicked generation; it asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
30 For just as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so the Son of Man will be a sign to this generation.
31 LThe Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon: and there is something greater than Solomon here.
32 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and there is something greater than Jonah here.
33 No one lights a lamp and puts it in a hidden place or under a basket. Instead, they put it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light.
34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light; if it is unhealthy, your body will also be full of darkness.
35 Therefore, take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.
36 Therefore, if your whole body is in the light, without any mixing of darkness, it will be fully illuminated, as when the light of a lamp shines upon you.«
37 While he was speaking, a Pharisee invited him to dinner at his house; Jesus went in and sat down at the table.
38 Now the Pharisee was astonished to see that he had not performed ablution before dinner.
39 The Lord said to him, »Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you all is full of greed and iniquity.
40 Fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also?
41 However, give alms according to your means, and everything will be pure for you.
42 But woe to you Pharisees, who tithe mint, rue and every garden plant, and have no concern for justice and the love of God! These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
43 Woe to you, Pharisees, who love the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces!
44 Woe to you, for you are like unseen graves, and people walk over them without knowing it!«
45 Then one of the lawyers spoke up and said to him, »Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.«
46 Jesus answered, »And woe to you also, teachers of the law! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not lift a finger to help them!”
47 Woe to you, who build tombs for the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them!
48 So you are witnesses and you applaud the works of your fathers; for they killed them, and you build tombs for them.
49 That is why the Wisdom of God said: I will send them prophets and apostles; they will kill some of them and persecute others:
50 so that this generation may be held accountable for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the creation of the world,
51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held accountable for it.
52 Woe to you, experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge; you yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering!«
53 As Jesus was saying these things to them, the Pharisees and the scribes began to press him sharply and to overwhelm him with questions,
54 laying traps for him, and seeking to catch him in some word to accuse him.
Chapter 12
1 Meanwhile, when thousands of people had gathered, so that they were trampling one another, Jesus began to say to his disciples:
»"Above all, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.".
2 There is nothing hidden that should not be revealed, nothing secret that should not be known.
3 Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear inside the house will be proclaimed from the housetops.
4 But I tell you, my friends: Do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.
5 I will tell you whom you should fear: fear him who, after you have killed, has the power to throw you into hell; yes, I tell you, fear him.
6 Are not five sparrows sold for two asses? And not one of them is forgotten by God.
7 But even the hairs on your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
8 I tell you again, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God;
9 But whoever denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God.
10 And whoever speaks against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
11 When they bring you before the synagogues, the magistrates, and the authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say;
12 For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what you ought to say.«
13 Then someone from the crowd said to Jesus, »Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.«
14 Jesus answered him, »Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?«
15 And he said to the people, »Be on your guard against all kinds of greed, for even in abundance a person’s life does not consist in the wealth they possess.«
16 Then he told them this parable: »There was a rich man whose land produced an abundant harvest.
17 And he was thinking to himself, “What shall I do? For I have no room to store my harvest.”.
18 This, he said, is what I will do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my crops and my possessions.
19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.”.
20 But God said to him, “Fool! This very night your soul will be demanded from you; and what you have laid up, whose will it be?”
21 So it is with the man who stores up treasures for himself, yet is not rich before God.«
22 Then Jesus said to his disciples, »Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.
23 Life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.
24 Consider the ravens: they do not sow or reap; they have no storeroom or barn, and yet God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than these birds?
25 Which of you, by worrying, could add a cubit to the length of your life?
26 If then the smallest things are beyond your power, why do you worry about the rest?
27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither labor nor spin; yet I tell you, Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
28 If that is how God clothes the grass, which is here today in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, you of little faith!
29 You too, do not seek what you will eat or drink, and do not be in suspense in anxiety.
30 For it is the people of this world who are concerned about all these things; but your Father knows that you need them.
31 But seek first the kingdom of God, and all these things will be given to you as well.
32 Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is more pleasing to your Father to give you the kingdom.
33 Sell what you have and give alms. Provide purses for yourselves that time will not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where thieves do not enter and moths do not destroy.
34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
35 Keep your belts fastened and your lamps lit!
36 Be like men who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that as soon as he arrives and knocks at the door, they may open it for him at once.
37 Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he returns! Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table, and will come and wait on them.
38 Whether he arrives at the second watch, or at the third, if he finds them thus, blessed are those servants!
39 But know well that if the father of the family knew at what hour the thief was to come, he would watch and would not let his house be broken into.
40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect.«
41 Then Peter said to him, »Are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?«
42 The Lord replied, »Who is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master will put in charge of his servants, to distribute the measure of wheat at the proper time?”
43 Blessed is that servant whom the master finds so doing when he comes!
44 I tell you truly, he will establish it over all his possessions.
45 But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time to come,’ and begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk,
46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will have him torn with blows, and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
47 That servant who knows the will of his master, and does not prepare anything or act according to his will, will receive many blows.
48 But the one who has not known it, and who has done things deserving of punishment, will receive few blows. Much will be demanded of the one to whom much has been given; and the more one has entrusted to someone, the more will be required of him.
49 I have come to set the earth on fire, and what do I desire, if it is already kindled?
50 I still have to be baptized with a baptism, and what anguish I feel until it is accomplished!
51 Do you think I came to establish peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.
52 For from now on, if there are five persons in a house, they shall be divided, three against two, and two against three;
53 The father will be divided against his son, and the son against his father; the mother against her daughter, and the daughter against her mother; the mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.«
54 He also said to the people: "When you see the cloud rising in the west, you immediately say: 'The rain is coming'; and it so happens.
55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, 'It will be hot,' and it is.
56 Hypocrites, you know how to recognize the appearances of heaven and earth; how then do you not recognize the time in which we live?
57 And how is it that you do not discern for yourselves what is right?
58 Indeed, when you go with your adversary before the magistrate, try on the way to free yourself from his pursuit, lest he drag you before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer of the court, and the latter throw you into prison.
59 I tell you, you will not leave there until you have paid every last penny.«
Chapter 13
1 At that time some people came and told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with that of their sacrifices.
2 He answered them, »Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered in this way?
3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did.
4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed, do you think their debt was greater than that of all the other inhabitants of Jerusalem?
5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as well.«
6 He also told this parable: »A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; he went to look for fruit on it, and finding none,
7 He said to the vinedresser: For three years now I have been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree, and I find none; cut it down then: why does it make the land unproductive?
8 The vinedresser replied, “Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I have dug up and put manure all around it.
9 Perhaps it will bear fruit afterward; if not, you can cut it down.«
10 Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath.
11 Now, there was a woman there who had been possessed for eighteen years by a spirit that made her infirm: she was bent over, and could not straighten up at all.
12 When Jesus saw her, he called her and said, »Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.«
13 And he laid his hands on her; immediately she sat up and glorified God.
14 But the synagogue leader, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, spoke up and said to the people, »There are six days for work; come and be healed on those days and not on the Sabbath.”
15 "Hypocrite," the Lord replied, "doesn't each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from its stall and lead it out to water?"
16 And this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan had kept bound for eighteen years, she was not to be freed from this chain on the Sabbath day!«
17 While he was speaking, all his opponents were covered in confusion, and all the people were delighted by all the wonderful things he accomplished.it wrinkled.
18 He also said, »What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it?
19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden; it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made their homes in its branches.«
20 He also said, »To what shall I compare the kingdom of God?”
21 It is like leaven which a woman takes and mixes into three measures of flour, so that the whole batch of dough rises.«
22 So he went about through the towns and villages, teaching and making his way toward Jerusalem.
23 Someone asked him, »Lord, will only a few be saved?» He said to them:
24 »"Strive to enter through the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able.".
25 Once the head of the household has risen and closed the door, if you stand outside and begin to knock, saying, Lord, open the door for us! he will answer you, I do not know where you are from.
26 Then you will begin to say, “We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our public squares.”.
27 And he will answer you: I tell you, I do not know where you come from; depart from me, all you workers of iniquity.
28 Then there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, while you are thrown out.
29 People will come from the East and the West, from the North and the South, and will take their places at the banquet in the kingdom of God.
30 And the last will be first, and the first will be last.«
31 That same day some Pharisees came to him and said, »Get out of here, for Herod wants to kill you.«
32 He replied to them: "Go and tell that fox: I will drive out demons and heal the sick today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will have finished.".
33 But I must continue on my way today, and tomorrow, and the day after; for it is not fitting that a prophet should die outside of Jerusalem.
34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to her! How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!
35 Your house is left to you. I tell you, you will not see me again until the day comes when you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'"«
Chapter 14
1 One Sabbath, Jesus went into the house of one of the leading Pharisees to eat, and they were watching him closely.
2 And behold, a man with dropsy was standing before him.
3 Jesus, speaking to the teachers of the law and the Pharisees, asked, »Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?«
4 And they remained silent. He, taking the man by the hand, healed him and sent him away.
5 Then, addressing them, he said, »Which of you, if your donkey or ox falls into a well, does not immediately pull it out on the Sabbath day?«
6 And to that they knew not what to answer him.
7 Then, noticing how eager the guests were to choose the best seats, Jesus told them this parable:
8 »When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, lest there be someone more distinguished than you,
9 and let not the one who invited you both come and say to you, Give him your seat; and let not then you begin with shame to occupy the last place.
10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place; so that when your host comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, move up higher.' Then you will be honored in the presence of the other guests.
11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.«
12 He also said to the one who had invited him, »When you give a dinner or a supper, do not invite your friends, your brothers, your relatives, or rich neighbors, lest they invite you in turn and repay you for what they have received from you.
13 But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind;
14 And you will be glad that they cannot repay you, for it will be repaid to you. the resurrection righteous people.«
15 One of those who were at the table with him, having heard these words, said to Jesus, »Blessed is the one who will share in the banquet in the kingdom of God!«
16 Jesus said to him, »A man gave a great banquet and invited many people.
17 At the time for the meal, he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, “Come, for everything is now ready.”.
18 And they all unanimously began to excuse themselves. The first one said to him: I have bought some land, and I must go and see it; I beg you to excuse me.
19 The second one said: I have bought five pairs of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please excuse me.
20 Another said, “I have just gotten married, and that is why I cannot go.”.
21 The servant returned and reported these things to his master. Then the head of the household, angered, said to his servant, “Go quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring here the poor, the cripples, the blind and the lame.
22 The servant said, "Master, it has been done as you commanded, and there is still room.".
23 The master said to the servant, “Go out into the highways and hedges, and urge those you find to come in, so that my house may be filled.
24 For I tell you, none of these men who were invited will taste my feast.«
25 As a large crowd was walking with him, he turned around and said to them:
26 »If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.”.
27 And whoever does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, and whether he has enough to complete it?
29 lest, after he has laid the foundations of the building, he should not be able to complete it, and all who see it should begin to mock him,
30 saying: This man began to build, and he was not able to finish.
31 Or what king, if he will do the war To another king, does he not first sit down to deliberate whether he can, with ten thousand men, face an enemy who comes to attack him with twenty thousand?
32 If he cannot do so, while the latter is still a long way off, he sends him an embassy to negotiate peace.
33 Therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
34 Salt is good; but if salt loses its flavor, how can it be made salty again?
35 Useless both for the soil and for manure, it is thrown out. Let him who has ears hear!«
Chapter 15
1 All publicans and the fishermen They approached Jesus to listen to him.
2 And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, »This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.«
3 Then he told them this parable:
4 »Which of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?”
5 And when he found her, he joyfully put her on his shoulders;
6 And when he returned home, he gathered his friends and neighbors together and said to them, “Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.”.
7 Therefore, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
8 Or what woman, having ten drachmas, if she loses one, does not light a lamp, sweep her house, and search carefully until she finds it?
9 And when she found it, she gathered her friends and neighbors and said to them: Rejoice with me, because I have found the drachma that I had lost.
10 Therefore, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.«
11 He also said, »A man had two sons.
12 The younger son said to his father, “Father, give me my share of the estate.” So the father divided his estate between them.
13 A few days later, the younger son gathered all that he had, set out for a distant country, and there he squandered his wealth in wild living.
14 When he had spent everything, a great famine came upon that country, and he began to feel need.
15 So he went away and entered the service of a citizen of the country, who sent him to his country house to tend the pigs.
16 He would have liked to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but nobody gave him any.
17 Then, coming to his senses, he said, “How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I am dying here of hunger!”
18 I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you;
19 I no longer deserve to be called your son: treat me like one of your mercenaries.
20 And he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him, and was deeply moved; he ran up and threw himself on his neck and kissed him.
21 His son said to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.”.
22 But the father said to his servants, “Bring the best robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.”.
23 Bring also the fattened calf and kill it; let us have a celebratory feast:
24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. And they began to celebrate.
25 Now the older son was in the fields; as he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing.
26 Calling one of the servants, he asked him what it was.
27 The servant said to him, “Your brother has arrived, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received it back safe and sound.”.
28 But he became angry and refused to go in. So the father went out and began to beg him.
29 He answered his father, “Look, all these years I have served you and have never disobeyed your orders, yet you have never given me even a young goat to celebrate with my friends.”.
30 And when that other son, who has devoured your wealth with prostitutes, arrives, you kill the fattened calf for him!
31 The father said to him, “You, my son, are always with me, and everything I have is yours.”.
32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.«
Chapter 16
1 Jesus also said to his disciples: "A rich man had a manager who was accused in his presence of wasting his possessions.
2 He called him and said to him, “What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your administration, for from now on you will no longer be able to manage my property.”.
3 Then the steward said to himself, “What shall I do, since my master is taking away my management of his property? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg.”.
4 I know what I will do, so that when my job is taken away from me, there will be people who will receive me into their homes.
5 So he called in his master’s debtors one by one, and said to the first, “How much do you owe my master?
6 He replied: One hundred barrels of oil. The steward told him: Take your bill: sit down quickly, and write fifty.
7 Then he said to another, “And you, how much do you owe?” He replied, “One hundred measures of wheat.” The steward told him, “Take your bill and write eighty.”.
8 And the master praised the dishonest steward for having acted skillfully; for the children of this age are more skillful with one another than the children of light.
9 I also tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when you leave this life, they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.
10 He who is faithful in small matters is faithful also in large matters, and he who is unjust in small matters is unjust also in large matters.
11 If you have not been faithful in the riches obtained through iniquity, who will entrust to you the true riches?
12 And if you have not been faithful in a stranger's possession, who will give you your own possession?
13 No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.«
14 The Pharisees, who loved money, also listened to all this and mocked him.
15 Jesus said to them, »You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts; and what is exalted in the sight of men is an abomination in the sight of God.
16 The Law and the Prophets go back to John; since John, the kingdom of God has been proclaimed, and everyone strives to enter it.
17 Heaven and earth will pass away more easily than one stroke of the law will perish.
18 Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and anyone who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.
19 There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen, and who lived lavishly every day.
20 A poor man named Lazarus was lying at his gate, covered with sores,
21 and wishing to be filled with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table; but even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22 Now it happened that the poor man died, and he was carried by the angels in Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.
23 In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side,
24 and he cried out, “Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony with this flame.”.
25 Abraham replied, “My son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus received his bad things, but now he is comforted here, and you are in pain.
26 Moreover, between us and you there is forever a great chasm, so that those who would like to pass from here to you cannot, and it is impossible to pass from there to us.
27 And the rich He said, “I beg you then, father, to send Lazarus to my father’s house.”,
28 — for I have five brothers — to testify to these things to them lest they also come to this place of torment.
29 Abraham replied, “They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.”
30 No, Abraham, our father, he replied; but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.
31 But Abraham said to him, «If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, someone will rise from the dead, yet they will not believe it.”
Chapter 17
1 Jesus also said to his disciples, »It is impossible that scandals should not come; but woe to him through whom they come!”
2 It would be better for him to have a millstone hung around his neck and to be thrown into the sea than to cause one of these little ones to stumble.
3. Take heed to yourselves.
If your brother sins against you, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.
4 And even if he sins against you seven times in a day, and returns seven times [in a day] to you saying, «I repent,” you must forgive him.«
5 The apostles said to the Lord, »Increase our faith.«
6 The Lord replied, »If you had faith like a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.
7 Which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will say to him, when he comes in from the field, “Come quickly and sit down to eat?”
8 Will he not, on the contrary, say to him, Prepare my supper, and gird yourself, and serve me, until I have eaten and drunk; and after that you shall eat and drink?
9 Does he give thanks to that servant because he did what he was commanded?
10 I don't think so. Likewise, when you have done what you were commanded, say: We are useless servants; we have done what we had to do.«
11 On his way to Jerusalem, Jesus was near the border of Samaria and Galilee.
12 As he entered a village, ten lepers came to meet him, and standing at a distance,
13 They raised their voices, saying, »Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!«
14 As soon as he saw them, he said to them, »Go, show yourselves to the priests.» And as they went, they were healed.
15 One of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice,
16 and falling facedown at Jesus’ feet, he gave him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan.
17 Then Jesus spoke up and said, »Were not the ten healed? Where are the nine?
18 Was this foreigner the only one among them found to return and give glory to God?
19 And he said to him, «Get up and go; your faith has saved you.”
20 When the Pharisees asked him when the kingdom of God would come, he replied, »The kingdom of God does not come in a way that can be observed.
21 No one will say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' for behold, the kingdom of God is in your midst.«
22 He also said to his disciples, »The time will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.
23 People will tell you, “Here he is!” and “There he is!” Beware of going after them and running after them.
24 For as the flash of lightning shines from one end of the sky to the other, so will it be with the Son of Man in his day.
25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be in the days of the Son of Man.
27 The men were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark; and the flood came and destroyed them all.
28 And as it happened in the days of Lot: men ate and drank, they bought and sold, they planted and built;
29 But on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all:
30 So it will be on the day the Son of Man is revealed.
Chapter 18
1 He told them another parable, to show them that they should always pray and not give up.
2 He said: »There was in a certain city a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men.
3 There was also a widow in that town who kept coming to him, saying, “Grant me justice against my adversary.”.
4 For a long time he did not want to; but afterward he said to himself, “Even though I do not fear God or care about men,
5 However, because this widow is bothering me, I will see justice done to her, so that she will not keep coming and tormenting me.
6 Listen, added the Lord, to what this unjust judge says.
7 And will God not bring about justice for his chosen ones who cry out to him night and day, and will he delay in their regard?
8 I tell you, he will soon see that they get justice. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?«
9 He also told this parable to some people who were confident of their own perfection and full of contempt for others:
10 »Two men went up to the temple to pray; one was a Pharisee, the other a tax collector.”.
11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself: O God, I thank you that I am not like other men, who are thieves, unjust, and adulterers, nor even like this tax collector.
12 I fast twice a week; I pay a tithe of all my income.
13 The tax collector, standing at a distance, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast and said, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner!”
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.«
15 People were also bringing their little children to him so that he might touch them; when his disciples saw this, they rebuked them.
16 But Jesus called the children to him and said, »Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
17 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.«
18 Then a ruler asked him, »Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?«
19 Jesus said to him, »Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.
20 You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery; do not murder; do not steal; do not bear false witness; honor your father and mother.«
21 He replied, »I have observed all these things since my youth.«
22 When Jesus heard this answer, he said to him, »You still lack one thing: sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.«
23 But when he heard these words, he became sad, because he was very rich.
24 When Jesus saw that he had become sad, he said, »How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!”
25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.«
26 Those who were listening to him said, »Who then can be saved?«
27 He replied, »What is impossible with men is possible with God.«
28 Then Peter said, »See, we have left everything and followed you.«
29 He said to them, »Truly I tell you, no one will ever leave home or parents or brothers or wife or children for the sake of the kingdom of God,
30 without receiving much more in this age, or in the age to come, eternal life.«
31 Then Jesus took the Twelve aside and said to them, »We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that the prophets have written about the Son of Man will be fulfilled.
32 He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and mocked, and insulted, and spat upon;
33 and after they have flogged him, they will put him to death, and he will rise again on the third day.«
34 But they did not understand any of it; it was a hidden language to them, the meaning of which they did not grasp.
Chapter 19
11 As they listened to this speech, he added a parable, because he was near Jerusalem, and the people thought that the kingdom of God was about to appear.
12 He said then:
28 After this saying, Jesus went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
29 When he approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the mountain called Olivet, Jesus sent two of his disciples,
30 saying, "Go to the village opposite; when you enter it, you will find a donkey tied up, on which no man has ever sat; untie it and bring it here.
31 And if anyone asks you why you are untying it, you shall answer: Because the Lord needs it.«
32 Those who were sent went and found things just as Jesus had told them.
33 As they were untying the donkey, its owners said to them, »Why are you untying this donkey?«
34 They replied, »Because the Lord needs it.«
35 And they brought it to Jesus; then, having thrown their cloaks over the donkey, they put Jesus on it.
36 As he passed by, people spread their coats on the road.
37 When he was nearing the descent from the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples, filled with joy, began to praise God with a loud voice for all miracles that they had seen.
38 »Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord,« they said. “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
39 Then some Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, »Teacher, rebuke your disciples!«
40 He answered them, »I tell you, if these remain silent, the stones will cry out.«
41 And when he drew near and saw Jerusalem, he wept over it, saying:
42 »If you, even you, had only known on this day which would bring you peace! But now these things are hidden from your eyes.
43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will surround you with trenches, besiege you, and hem you in on every side;
44 They will knock you to the ground, you and the children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another within your walls, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.«
47 Jesus spent his days teaching in the temple. And the chief priests, the scribes, and the leading men of the people were seeking to destroy him;
48 But they did not know how to do it, for all the people were listening to him with rapture.
Chapter 20
1 One day, as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and proclaiming the good news, the chief priests and the scribes arrived with the elders,
2 and said to him, »Tell us by what authority you are doing these things, or who gave you this authority?«
3 Jesus answered them, »I also have a question for you. Answer me.
4 Was John's baptism from heaven, or from men?«
5 But they reasoned among themselves, »If we answer, ‘From heaven he will say to us,’ ‘Why did you not believe in him?’”
6 And if we answer, «From men,” all the people will stone us, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.«
7 So they answered him that they did not know where he was from.
8 »And I,« Jesus said to them, “will not tell you by what authority I do these things.”
9 Then he began to tell the people this parable: »A man planted a vineyard and rented it to tenants; then he went away for a long time to a foreign country.
10 When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants to give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But they beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
11 He sent yet another servant; but they beat him also and treated him unworthily, and sent him away empty-handed.
12 He sent a third; but the tenants also wounded him and threw him out.
13 Then the owner of the vineyard said to himself, “What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps when they see him they will respect him.”.
14 But when the tenants saw him, they said to one another, “This is the heir; let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.”.
15 And having thrown him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
16 He will come and destroy those tenants and give his vineyard to others.» When they heard this, they said, »Never!«
17 But looking intently at them, Jesus said, »What then is this Scripture saying: ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone?’”
18 Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.«
19 The chief priests and the scribes sought to seize him at that very hour; but the fear of the people held them back, for they understood that it was against them that Jesus had spoken this parable.
20 So they did not lose sight of him, and sent men stationed there who pretended to be righteous, to catch him in his words, in order to deliver him into the authority and power of the governor.
21 These people questioned him, saying, »Teacher, we know that you speak and teach with integrity and without favoritism, but that you teach the way of God in truth.
22 Are we permitted, or not, to pay tribute to Caesar?«
23 Jesus, knowing their deceitfulness, said to them, »Why are you tempting me?
24 Show me a denarius. Whose image and name is on it?» They answered him, »Caesar’s.«
25 And he said to them, »Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.«
26 Thus they could not find fault with him in any word before the people; and admiring his answer, they remained silent.
27 Some of the Sadducees, who deny the resurrection, They then approached and questioned him:
28 »Teacher,” they said to him, “Moses gave us this law: If a man dies and has no children, his brother must take his wife and raise up children for his brother.
29 Now there were seven brothers; the first one took a wife and died without children.
30 The second took his wife, and also died without children.
31 The third one then took her, and so did all seven of them, and they died without leaving any children.
32 After all of them, the woman also died.
33 Which one, then, at the time of the resurrection, Will she be the woman, as she has been of all seven?«
34 Jesus said to them, »The children of this age marry and are given in marriage;
35 But those who have been found worthy to share in the age to come and in the resurrection of the dead, do not take wives and have no husbands;
36 They can no longer die, since they are in a state of being. the angels, and that they are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
37 But that the dead are raised, this is what Moses himself made known in the passage of the Burning Bush, where he calls the Lord: The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
38 Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living; for all are alive before him.«
39 Some of the scribes, speaking up, said to him, »Teacher, you have spoken well.«
40 And they no longer dared to ask him any questions.
41 Jesus said to them, »How can people say that the Christ is the son of David?
42 David himself says in the book of Psalms: The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
43 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.
44 David calls him Lord; how can he be his son?«
45 While all the people were listening to him, he said to his disciples:
46 »Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes; who like to be greeted in the marketplaces, to occupy the best seats in the synagogues and the best places at banquets:
47 Those who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers will receive a more severe condemnation.«
Chapter 21
20 But when you see armies besieging Jerusalem, Know then that its desolation is near.
21 Those who are in Judea should flee to the mountains, those who are in the city should leave it, and those who are in the countryside should not enter the city.
22 For these will be days of punishment, for the fulfillment of all that is written.
23 Woe to those who are pregnant or nursing infants in those days, for there will be great distress on the earth and great wrath against this people.
24 They will fall by the edge of the sword; they will be taken captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
25 And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars, and on the earth the nations will be in anguish and dismay at the roaring of the sea and the waves;
26 Men wither with fear, apprehensive of what is coming upon the whole earth; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with great power and great glory.
28 When these things begin to happen, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.«
29 And he told them this parable: »Look at the fig tree and all the trees:
30 As soon as they start to grow, you know by yourselves, by seeing them, that summer is near.
31 Similarly, when you see these things happening, Know that the kingdom of God is near..
32 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until everything is accomplished.
33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
34 Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap;
35 for it will come like a snare upon all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth.
36 Therefore, watch and pray without ceasing., so that you may be found worthy to escape all these evils that are going to happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.«
37 During the day Jesus taught in the temple, and he left it to spend the night on the mountain called Olivet.
38 And all the people, early in the morning, came to him in the temple to listen to him.
Chapter 22
1 The Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called Passover, was approaching;
2 and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they might put Jesus to death; for they feared the people.
3 Now Satan entered into Judas, surnamed Iscariot, one of the Twelve;
4 and he went to consult with the chief priests and magistrates about how to hand him over to them.
5 They, filled with joy, promised to give him money.
6 He went his own way and sought a favorable opportunity to hand Jesus over to them without the crowd noticing.
7 The day of Unleavened Bread arrived, when the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed.
8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, »Go and prepare the Passover meal for us.«
9 They said to him, »Where do you want us to prepare it?«
10 He answered them, »When you enter the city, you will meet a man carrying a jug of water; follow him into the house he enters,
11 and you shall say to the master of this house, The Teacher sends you to say: Where is the room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?
12 And he will show you a large, furnished room: prepare what is needed there.«
13 They went away and found things just as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover.
14 When the hour had come, Jesus and the twelve Apostles with him reclined at the table;
15 and he said to them, »I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until the Passover is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.«
17 And taking a cup, he gave thanks and said, »Take and share among yourselves.
18 For I tell you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.«
19 Then he took bread, and having given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, »This is my body, which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.«
20 In the same way he took the cup after supper, saying, »This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
21 But behold, the hand of him who betrayed me is with me at this table.
22 As for the Son of Man, he will do as it has been decreed; but woe to the man by whom he is betrayed!«
23 And the disciples began to ask one another which of them should do this.
24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be the greatest.
25 Jesus said to them, »The kings of the nations rule over them, and those who command them are called Benefactors.
26 But you should not do so; but let the greatest among you be as the least, and the one who rules as the one who serves.
27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
28 You have remained with me in my trials;
29 And I am preparing a kingdom for you, just as my Father has prepared it for me,
30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel.«
31 And the Lord said, »Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat;
32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.
33 “Lord,” Peter said to him, “I am ready to go with you and to prison and to death.«
34 Jesus answered him, »I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know me.«
35 He also said to his disciples, »When I sent you out without purse, bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?”
36 »You’re welcome,» they told him. He added, “But now let the one who has a purse take it, and likewise the one who has a bag; and let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one.”.
37 For I tell you, this Scripture must still be fulfilled in me: «He was numbered with the transgressors.” For what concerns me is drawing to a close.«
38 They said to him, »Lord, there are two swords here.» He replied, »That is enough.«
39 He went out, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.
40 When he arrived at that place, he said to them, »Pray that you will not fall into temptation.«
41 Then he withdrew from them to a distance of a stone's throw; and kneeling down, he prayed,
42 saying, »Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.«
43 Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.
44 And being in agony, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.
45 After praying, he got up and came to the disciples, whom he found sleeping from sorrow.
46 And he said to them, »Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.«
47 While he was still speaking, a group of people appeared, with the one called Judas, one of the Twelve, leading the way. He approached Jesus to kiss him.
48 And Jesus said to him, »Judas, you betray the Son of Man with a kiss!«
49 When those who were with Jesus saw what was going to happen, they said to him, »Lord, should we strike with the sword?«
50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
51 But Jesus said, »Stay there.» And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52 Then, addressing the chief priests, the officers of the temple, and the elders who had come to arrest him, he said to them, »You have come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs.
53 Every day I was with you in the temple, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.«
54 They seized him and led him away and brought him into the house of the high priest; Peter followed at a distance.
55 Having lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard, they sat down around it, and Peter sat among them.
56 A servant girl, seeing him sitting by the fire, stared at him intently and said, »This man was also with him.«
57 But Peter denied Jesus, saying, »Woman, I do not know him.«
58 A little later, another man saw him and said, »You are one of them.» Peter replied, »Friend, I am not.«
59 An hour had passed when another man began to say confidently, »Surely this man was with him, for he is from Galilee.«
60 Peter replied, »Friend, I don’t know what you mean.» And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.
61 Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter, and Peter remembered the word that the Lord had spoken to him: »Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.«
62 And when Peter had gone out of the house, he wept bitterly.
63 Now those who were holding Jesus mocked him and beat him.
64 They blindfolded him, and, striking him in the face, they questioned him, saying, »Guess who hit you.«
65 And they uttered many other insults against him.
66 As soon as it was light, the elders of the people, the chief priests, and the scribes gathered together and brought Jesus into their assembly. They said, »If you are the Christ, tell us.«
67 He answered them, »If I tell you, you will not believe;
68 and if I question you, you will not answer me and will not release me.
69 From now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.«
70 Then they all said, »Are you then the Son of God?» He answered them, »You say so, and I am.«
71 And they said, »What further testimony do we need? We ourselves have heard it from his own lips.«
Chapter 23
1 Then the whole assembly stood up and led Jesus before Pilate,
2 And they began to accuse him, saying, »We have found this man inciting our nation to revolt and forbidding us to pay tribute to Caesar, calling himself Christ the King.«
3 Pilate questioned him, saying, »Are you the king of the Jews?» Jesus answered him, »You say so.«
4 Pilate said to the chief priests and the people, »I find no guilt in this man.«
5 But they pressed them further and said, »He stirs up the people and spreads his teaching throughout Judea, from Galilee, where he began, even to this place.«
6 When Pilate heard Galilee mentioned, he asked if the man was a Galilean;
7 and when he learned that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him back to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
8 Herod was overjoyed to see Jesus; for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard much about him, and he hoped to see him perform some miracle.
9 He asked him many questions, but Jesus did not answer him.
10 Now the chief priests and the scribes were there, accusing him persistently.
11 But Herod, with his guards, treated him with contempt; after mocking him and dressing him in a splendid robe, he sent him back to Pilate.
12 That very day Herod and Pilate became friends, from having been enemies.
13 Pilate, having assembled the chief priests, the magistrates, and the people,
14 said to them: »You brought this man to me as someone inciting the people to revolt; I questioned him before you, and I found none of the crimes of which you accuse him;
15 nor Herod either, for I sent you back to him, and, as you see, nothing deserving death has been proven against him.
16 So I will release him after I have punished him.«
17 [Pilate was obliged, on the day of the festival, to grant them the release of a prisoner].
18 But the whole crowd shouted, »Away with this man, and release Barabbas to us!»
19 which had been put in prison because of a sedition that had taken place in the city, and a murder.
20 Pilate, who wanted to release Jesus, addressed them again;
21 But they answered with this cry: »Crucify him! Crucify him!«
22 For the third time, Pilate said to them, »What crime has he committed? I have found nothing in him deserving of death. So I will have him punished and send him away.«
23 But they persisted, shouting loudly that he should be crucified, and their shouts grew louder.
24 Pilate therefore pronounced that it would be done as they asked.
25 He released the one they were demanding, who had been put in prison for sedition and murder, and he handed Jesus over to their will.
26 As they led him away, they seized a man named Simon, from Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and they laid the cross on him to carry it behind Jesus.
27 Now, a great crowd of people and women followed him, beating their breasts and wailing over him.
28 Turning to them, Jesus said, »Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children;
29 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, “Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed!”
30 Then men will begin to say to the mountains, “Fall on us,” and to the hills, “Cover us.”.
31 For if they treat green wood in this way, what will they do with dry wood?«
32 And two criminals were also led out to be put to death with Jesus.
33 When they came to the place called Calvary, they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on his right and the other on his left.
34 But Jesus said, »Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.» Then they divided his clothes among themselves by casting lots.
35 The people stood watching, and the rulers joined him in mocking Jesus, saying, »He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ, the chosen one of God.«
36 The soldiers also mocked him; approaching and offering him vinegar;
37 They said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself."»
38 Above his head was also an inscription in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew characters: »This is the King of the Jews.«
39 Now one of the criminals who were hanged on the cross was hurling insults at him, saying, »Since you are the Christ, Save yourself and save us !«
40 But the other rebuked him, saying, »Do you not fear God, you too, since you are condemned to the same punishment?
41 For us, it is just, for we are receiving what our crimes deserve; but he has done nothing wrong.«
42 And he said to Jesus, »Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.«
43 Jesus answered him, »Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.«
44 It was about the sixth hour, when darkness covered the whole land until the ninth hour.
45 The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.
46 And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, »Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.» And when he had said this, he breathed his last.
47 When the centurion saw what had happened, he praised God and said, »Surely this man was righteous.«
48 And all the multitude that had gathered for this spectacle, considering what had happened, went away beating their breasts.
49 But all of Jesus' friends stood at a distance, with women who had followed him from Galilee and were contemplating all of this.
50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the council, a good and righteous man,
51 who had not given his assent either to the plan of others, nor to their actions; — he was from Arimathea, a city of Judea, and was waiting, likewise, for the kingdom of God.
52 This man went to Pilate and asked him for the body of Jesus,
53 and having taken him down, he wrapped him in a linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb cut out of the rock, where no one had ever been laid.
54 It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was about to begin.
55 Women who had come from Galilee with Jesus, having accompanied Joseph, They considered the tomb, and the way in which the body of Jesus had been laid in it.
56 So they returned home and prepared spices and perfumes; and on the Sabbath day they rested, according to the commandment.
Chapter 24
1 But on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they went to the tomb, with the spices they had prepared.
2 They saw that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb;
3 and when they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 While they were filled with anxiety about this, behold, two men, clothed in splendid robes, appeared standing beside them.
5 As they bowed their faces to the ground in their terror, the men said to them, »Why do you look for the living among the dead?
6 He is not here, but he has risen! Remember what he told you while he was still in Galilee:
7 The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinners, be crucified, and on the third day rise again.«
8 Then they remembered the words of Jesus,
9 And when they returned from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.
10 Those who told these things to the Apostles were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Married, Jacques' mother, and their other companions.
11 But they regarded their words as vain tales, and they did not believe these women.
12 However, Peter got up and ran to the tomb; and, stooping down, he saw nothing but the linen cloths lying there, and he went home, amazed at what had happened.
13 Now that same day two of the disciples were on their way to a village called Emmaus, about sixty stadia from Jerusalem,
14 and they talked about all these things.
15 While they were talking and sharing their thoughts, Jesus himself joined them and went with them;
16 but their eyes were kept so that they did not recognize him.
17 He said to them, »What are you discussing together as you walk along, and why do you seem so sad?«
18 One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, »Are you the only foreigner who has come to Jerusalem and does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
19 »What things?» he asked them. They replied, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
20 how the chief priests and our magistrates handed him over to be condemned to death, and crucified him.
21 As for us, we had hoped that he was the one who would redeem Israel; but besides all this, today is the third day since these things have happened.
22 In truth, some of the women who are with us have greatly astonished us: they went to the tomb before daybreak,
23 and when they did not find his body, they came and said that angels had appeared to them and announced that he was alive.
24 Some of our people went to the tomb and found everything as women They had said so; but they did not see him.«
25 Then Jesus said to them, »O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
26 Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter into his glory?«
27 Then, beginning with Moses and going through all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
28 When they came near the village they were going to, he pretended to go further.
29 But they urged him strongly, saying, »Stay with us, for it is getting late and the day is almost over.» So he went in to stay with them.
30 Now, while he was at the table with them, he took the bread, said a blessing, then broke it, and gave it to them.
31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; but he became invisible to their eyes.
32 And they said to one another, »Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?«
33 Rising at once, they returned to Jerusalem; where they found the Eleven and their companions gathered together,
34 who said, »The Lord has truly risen and has appeared to Simon.«
35 They themselves, in turn, related what had happened to them on the way, and how they had recognized him in the breaking of the bread.
36 While they were talking like this, Jesus stood among them and said, »Peace be with you! It is I; do not be afraid.«
37 Seized with amazement and terror, they thought they saw a spirit.
38 But he said to them, »Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?
39 Look at my hands and my feet; it is I myself. Touch me, and see that a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.«
40 Having said this, he showed them his hands and feet.
41 While in their joy they still doubted to believe, and did not come out of their amazement, he said to them, »Do you have anything here to eat?«
42 They presented him with a piece of roasted fish and a honeycomb.
43 He took them and ate them in front of them.
44 Then he said to them, »This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.«
45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures;
46 And he said to them, »Thus it is written: ‘And thus the Christ had to suffer, and on the third day rise from the dead,’”,
47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48 You are witnesses of these things.
49 I am going to send you the gift promised by my Father; and you, stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.«
50 Then he led them out of the city, as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them.
51 While he was blessing them, he parted from them and was taken up into heaven.
52 For them, after worshiping him, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
53 And they were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. [Amen!]
