Chapter 1
1 The words of Amos, who was among the shepherds of Tekoa. What he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.
2 He said: Yahweh will roar from Zion; from Jerusalem he will utter his voice; the pastures of the shepherds will mourn, and the top of Carmel will wither.
3 This is what the Lord says: “For three sins of Damascus, and for four, I will not revoke it. Because they crushed Gilead with sledges of iron,
4 I will send fire into the house of Hazael, and it will devour the palaces of Ben-Hadad;
5 I will break the bolt of Damascus, I will cut off the inhabitants of Biqath-Aven, and the one who holds the scepter from Beth-Eden; and the people of Syria He will go captive to Qir, says Yahweh.
6 This is what the Lord says: Because of three crimes committed by Gaza, and because of four, I will not revoke it. Because they carried off entire caravans of captives to hand them over to Edom,
7 I will send fire upon the walls of Gaza, and it will devour its palaces;
8 I will cut off the inhabitants of Azoth, and those who hold the scepter from Ashkelon, and I will turn my hand against Accaron; and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, says the Lord Yahweh.
9 This is what the Lord says: “For three sins of Tyre, and for four, I will not revoke it. Because they handed over entire caravans of captives to Edom, and did not remember the covenant of brotherhood,
10 I will send fire upon the wall of Tyre, and it will devour its palaces.
11 This is what the Lord says: “Because of three transgressions of Edom, and because of four, I will not revoke him. Because he pursued his brother with the sword and stifled his compassion, and because his anger ripped forever, and he harbored his resentment to the end,
12 I will send fire into Teman, and it will devour the palaces of Bozrah.
13 This is what the Lord says: “For three transgressions of the Ammonites, and for four, I will not revoke it. Because they have split open the land.” the belly pregnant women from Gilead, in order to expand their border,
14 I will kindle a fire on the wall of Rabbah, and it will devour his palaces, amid the war cries of a day of battle, amid the whirlwind of a day of storm.
15 And their king will go into captivity, he and his princes with him, says Yahweh.
Chapter 2
1 This is what the Lord says: “Because of three sins of Moab, and because of four, I will not revoke his life. Because he burned the bones of the king of Edom until they were charred,
2 I will send fire upon Moab, and it will devour the palaces of Carioth; and Moab will die amidst tumult, war cries, and the sound of the trumpet.
3 I will exterminate the Judge from among them, and I will slaughter with him all his princes, says Yahweh.
4 This is what the Lord says: “For three sins of Judah, and for four, I will not revoke it. Because they have rejected the law of the Lord and have not kept his statutes, and their false idols, which their ancestors followed, have led them astray.”,
5 I will send fire upon Judah, and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem.
6 This is what the Lord says: “Because of three sins of Israel, and because of four, I will not revoke it. Because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals;
7 because they aspire to have the dust of the earth on the heads of the wretched, and that they make the way of the lowly bend; because the son and his father go towards the even daughter, to profane my holy name;
8 because they lie on garments received as pledges, beside all the altars, and drink the wine of those they have fined, in the house of their God.
9 And yet I had destroyed before them the Amorite, whose greatness was like that cedars, and which was strong like oaks; I had destroyed its fruit above, and its roots below.
10 Yet I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years in the wilderness, to give you possession of the land of the Amorites.
11 I had raised up prophets among your sons, and Nazirites among your young men—is this not so, O children of Israel?—declares the Lord.
12 But you made the Nazirites drink wine and gave this The order to the prophets: "Do not prophesy!"
13 Behold, I am going to trample you like a crowd the earth a cart, when it is filled with sheaves.
14. The escape will be missed by the’man agile, and the strong will no longer find his strength; and the valiant will not save his life,
15 And he who wields the bow will not stand firm; and the swift-footed man will not se will not save, and the rider will not save his life.
16 And the bravest of the brave will flee naked on that day, — oracle of Yahweh.
Chapter 3
1 Listen to this word that Yahweh has spoken concerning you, children of Israel, concerning all the family that I brought up out of the land of Egypt, — in these words:
2 I have known no one but you among all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.
3 Two men Do they walk together, without having agreed?
4 Does the lion roar in the forest, but have no prey? Does the lion cub make its voice resound? from the bottom from his den, without him having Nothing taken ?
5 Does the sparrow fall into the net on the ground, if there is no bait for it? Does the net rise from the ground, if it has not caught anything? something ?
6 When a trumpet is sounded in a city, do not the people tremble? When disaster strikes a city, is not the Lord responsible?
7 For the Lord Yahweh does nothing without revealing his secret to his servants, the prophets.
8 The lion has roared: who will not fear? The Lord Yahweh has spoken: who will not prophesy?
9 Proclaim this word upon the palaces in Azotus, and upon the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say: Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria, and see what great disorder is in the midst of her, and what violence within her.
10 And they do not know how to act with justice, — oracle of Yahweh, they who store up violence and plunder in their palaces.
11 Therefore this is what the Lord Yahweh says: “Here is the enemy, he surrounds the land; he will strip you of your strength, and your palaces will be plundered.”.
12 Thus says Yahweh: As a shepherd rescues two hamstrings or a piece of an ear from the mouth of a lion, so shall the children of Israel be saved, who sit in Samaria, in the corner of a couch, on cushions of Damascus.
13 Listen, and bear witness to this in the house of Jacob, — declares the Lord Yahweh, the God of hosts:
14 On the day I avenge on him the transgressions of Israel, I will avenge Also the altars of Bethel; the horns of the altar shall be broken, and they shall fall to the ground.
15 I will strike the winter house, along with the summer house; the ivory houses will be devastated, and many houses will be destroyed, — oracle of Yahweh.
Chapter 4
1 Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria, you who oppress the weak and trample the poor, you who say to your husbands, »Bring us something to drink!«
2 The Lord Yahweh has sworn by his holiness: Behold, the days will come upon you when you will be taken away with hooks, and your offspring with harpoons.
3 You will go out through the breaches, each one straight ahead, and you will be thrown into Armon, — oracle of Yahweh.
4 Come to Bethel and sin, to Gilgal and multiply your sins! Bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes every three days!
5 Burn an unleavened offering of praise; announce voluntary contributions, publish—THE For this is what you love, children of Israel, — declares the Lord Yahweh.
6 So I gave you clear teeth in all your cities, and a lack of bread in all your dwellings; and you have not returned to me, — oracle of Yahweh.
7 So I withheld the rain for you when there were still three months before the harvest; I made it rain on one city, but I did not make it rain on another other city; a region was watered by rain, and a other the region, where it did not rain, was drying out.
8 Two, three cities were racing to one other city, to drink water, and did not quench their thirst; and you have not returned to me, — oracle of Yahweh.
9 I struck you with blight and mildew; your many gardens, your vineyards, your fig trees and your olive trees, the locust devoured; and you did not return to me, — oracle of Yahweh.
10 I sent plague among you, as in Egypt; I killed your young men with the sword, while your horses were captured; I made the stench rise from your camp, and she arrived to your nostrils; and you have not returned to me, — oracle of Yahweh.
11 I have caused upheaval in you, as God upheaved Sodom and Gomorrah, and you have been like a burning stick plucked from the fire; and you have not returned to me, — oracle of Yahweh.
12 Therefore, this is what I will do to you, Israel! Since I am going to do this to you, prepare to meet your God, Israel!
13 For it is he who formed the mountains, and created the wind, who makes known to man what his thoughts are, who turns the dawn into darkness, and who treads upon the heights of the earth! Yahweh, the God of hosts, is his name.
Chapter 5
1 Hear this word that I speak over you—a lamentation—house of Israel:
2 She has fallen, she will not rise again, the virgin of Israel! She is overturned on her land, no one will raise her up.
3 For thus says the Lord: The city that went out into battle with a thousand warriors She will keep a hundred; she who went to war with a hundred will keep ten, for the house of Israel.
4 For thus says Yahweh to the house of Israel: Seek me and live!
5 Do not seek Bethel, do not come to Galgala, do not cross over to Beersheba! For Galgala will be taken captive, and Bethel will become nothing.
6 Seek the Lord and live, lest he break out like a fire upon the house of Joseph and devour it, with no one to quench it in Bethel.
7 They turn justice into wormwood, and cast righteousness to the ground!
8 He made the Pleiades and Orion; he turns darkness into dawn and day into deep night; he calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the earth; Yahweh is his name.
9 He brings ruin upon the mighty, and ruin falls upon the fortified city.
10 At the gate they hate the one who criticizes; and the one who speaks with integrity, they L'’they loathe it.
11 Therefore, because you trample the poor underfoot and exact from them a tribute of grain, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you will not live in them; you have planted excellent vineyards, but you will not drink their wine.
12 For I know that your crimes are many, that your sins are great, you who oppress the righteous, who take bribes, and who make others yield the right poor people at the Gate.
13 Therefore the wise man keeps silent at this time, for it is an evil time.
14 Seek good and not evil, that you may live, and that Yahweh, the God of hosts, may be with you, as you say.
15 Hate evil and love good, and restore justice to the Gate: perhaps Yahweh, the God of hosts, will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph!
16 Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of hosts, says: In every square there will be wailing, and in every street a cry of “Alas! Alas!” The farmer will be called to mourning and lamentation, along with those who know how to wail.
17 In all the vineyards there will be lamentation; for I will pass through the midst of you, says Yahweh.
18 Woe to those who long for the day of the Lord! What will the day of the Lord be for you? It will be darkness, and not light.
19 Like a man who flees from a lion, and the bear comes to meet him; he enters his house, leans his hand against the wall, and the snake bites him!…
20 Is not the day of the Lord darkness, and not light, but gloom without any brightness?
21 I hate, I despise your festivals, I have no pleasure in your assemblies.
22 If you offer me your burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I will not accept them, and your sacrifices of fattened calves, I will not look upon them.
23 Take away from me the noise of your songs; let me not hear the sound of your harps!
24 But let justice roll on like water, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream!
25 Have you offered me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness for forty years, O house of Israel?
26 You carried the tent of your king, and Kijoum, your idols, the star of your god, which you made for yourselves.
27 I will deport you beyond Damascus, says Yahweh; God of hosts is his name.
Chapter 6
1 Woe to those who live tranquil in Zion, and secure on the mountain of Samaria, the noblest of the first of peoples, to whom the house of Israel goes!
2 Go over to Calneh and see; from there go to Hamath the great; go down to Geth of the Philistines; These cities Are they more prosperous than these kingdoms, and is their territory larger than yours?
3 You are putting off the day of disaster, and you are bringing near the reign of violence!
4 They lie on beds of ivory, and stretch out on their couches; they eat the lambs of the flock, and the calves fattened in the stable.
5 They frolic to the sound of the harp; like David, they have invented musical instruments.
6 They drink wine from large bowls, they anoint themselves with the finest oils. And they are not sick with Joseph’s wound.
7 That is why they will go into exile, to the head of the captives, and the cries of joy of the voluptuaries will disappear.
8 The Lord Yahweh has sworn by himself, — oracle of Yahweh, the God of hosts: I abhor the pride of Jacob, and I hate his palaces; I will give up the city and all that is in it.
9 And if ten men remain in one house, they will die.
10 A relative with the one who is burning the corpses will remove the dead, and will carry the bones out of the house; and mon will say to the one at the back of the house, "Are there any left with you?" He will answer, "No one!" And the first will say: "Silence!" For the name of Yahweh must not be spoken.
11 For behold, Yahweh commands, and he brings down the great house to ruins, and the little house to rubble.
12 Do the horses run on the rock, where y Is it necessary to plow with oxen, that you have changed justice into poison, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood?
13 You rejoice over what is nothing, saying, »Did we not acquire power by our own strength?«
14 For behold, I am raising up against you, house of Israel, declares Yahweh, the God of hosts! a nation which will oppress you from the entrance of Hamath to the stream of the desert.
Chapter 7
1 Thus the Lord Yahweh showed me, and behold, he was forming locusts at the beginning of the second growth; it was the second growth after the king's cutting.
2 When they had finished devouring the grass of the earth, I said, »Sovereign Lord, please forgive! How can Jacob endure it? He is so small.«
3 And Yahweh relented concerning this: »It shall not be,« said Yahweh.
4 Thus the Lord Yahweh showed me, and behold, the Lord Yahweh came to punish with fire, and fire devoured the great abyss, and he devoured the portion of the Lord.
5 And I said, »Sovereign Lord, please stop! How can Jacob stand? He is so small.«
6 Yahweh relented: »This too shall not be,« said the Lord Yahweh.
7 Thus I was shown Yahweh, And behold, the Lord stood upon a vertical wall, and he had in his hand a thread to lead.
8 And Yahweh said to me, »What do you see, Amos?» I answered, » A thread to lead. And the Lord me said: "Here I am putting the thread lead in the midst of my people Israel; I will no longer forgive him.
9 The high places of Isaac will be devastated, and the sanctuaries of Israel will be destroyed, and I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.«
10 And Amaziah, priest of Bethel, sent word to Jeroboam, king of Israel: »Amos is conspiring against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land can no longer bear all his words.
11 For Amos has spoken thus: Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will be taken captive from its land.«
12 And Amasias said to Amos, »Seer, go away, flee to the land of Judah, and eat your bread there; there you shall prophesy.
13 But do not prophesy any longer at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary and a royal house.
14 Amos answered and said to Amaziah, »I am not a prophet, I am not the son of a prophet; I am a herdsman and I tend sycamore trees.
15 And Yahweh took me from behind the flock, and Yahweh said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel.
16 And now, hear the word of the Lord: You say, “You shall not prophesy against Israel, nor speak against the house of Isaac!”…
17 Therefore this is what the Lord says: Your wife will become a prostitute in the city, your sons and daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be divided up by the measuring line, and you will die in an unclean land, and Israel will go into exile from its land.«
Chapter 8
1 Thus the Lord Yahweh showed me, and behold, a basket of ripe fruit.
2 And he said, »What do you see, Amos?» I answered, »A basket of ripe fruit.» And Yahweh said to me, »The end has come for my people Israel; I will no longer forgive them.”.
3 The songs of the palace will be howls on that day, declares the Lord Yahweh. There will be many corpses, and everywhere they will be thrown down in silence.«
4 Listen to this, you who swallow up the poor, and who would you like to make the poor disappear from the country,
5 saying, »When will the new moon be over, so that we may sell wheat, and the Sabbath, so that we may open our grain stores, making the ephah smaller and the shekel bigger, falsifying the scales to deceive?”
6 We will buy the wretched for money, and the poor Because of a pair of sandals, and we'll sell the wheat chaff?«
7 Yahweh L'’swore by the pride of Jacob: I will not forget until the end all their deeds.
8 Because of this, will not the earth quake, and all its inhabitants mourn? It will rise up entirely like the Nile; it will surge and sink, like the Nile of Egypt.
9 On that day it will come to pass, declares the Lord Yahweh, I will make the sun set at midday, and I will cover the earth with darkness on a clear day.
10 I will turn your festivals into mourning, and all your songs of joy into lamentation; I will put sackcloth on every loins, and I will make every head bald; I will make the land like in The grief of losing an only son, and its end will be like a bitter day.
11 Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord Yahweh, and I will send a famine upon the earth, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst of water, but of hearing the words of Yahweh.
12 And they will wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they will go here and there to seek the word of the Lord, and they will not there They won't find it.
13 In those days the beautiful virgins and the young men will be exhausted by thirst.
14 Those who swear by the sin of Samaria and say, »As surely as your God lives, O Dan! By the way of Beersheba!» will fall and not rise again.
Chapter 9
1 I saw the Lord standing by the altar, and he said, »Strike the capital, and shake the thresholds, and shatter them on the heads of all! And what remains I will slaughter with the sword; not one will save, not one will escape.
2 If they enter Sheol, my hand will bring them out; if they ascend to heaven, I will bring them down.
3 If they hide on the top of Carmel, I will search for them and take them; and if they hide from my sight in the depths of the sea, there I will command the serpent to bite them.
4 And if they go into captivity before their enemies, there I will command the sword to slaughter them. And I will fix my eye on them, for harm and not for good.«
5 The Lord Yahweh of hosts touches the earth and it melts, and all its inhabitants mourn; it rises entirely like the Nile, and sinks like the river of Egypt.
6 He builds his flights of stairs in the heavens, and establishes his vault on the earth; he calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out over the face of the earth: Yahweh is his name.
7 Are you not to me like the sons of the Cushites, children of Israel, declares the Lord? Did I not bring Israel up from the land of Egypt, and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Arameans from Kir?
8 Behold, the eyes of the Lord Yahweh are fixed on the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth; however, I will not completely destroy the house of Jacob, — oracle of Yahweh.
9 For behold, I will give orders, and I will shake the house of Israel among all the nations, as one shakes wheat with the sieve, and the good grain will not fall to the ground.
10 All the fishermen Many of my people will perish by the sword, those who say, »Disaster will not come near.” misfortune from us will not reach us.«
11 On that day I will raise up David’s fallen booth; I will repair his breaches, I will address his ruins, and I will rebuild it as in the days of old,
12 so that they may possess the remnant of Edom, and all the nations upon which my name has been invoked, — oracle of Yahweh, who does these things.
13 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when the plowman will join the reaper, and the treader of the grapes…” will join the one who scatters the seed; the mountains will drip with new wine, and all the hills will flow.
14 I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel; they will rebuild the ruined cities and THE They will live there, they will plant vineyards and drink the wine, they will make gardens and eat the fruit.
15 And I will plant them in their own land, and they will never again be uprooted from their land, which I have given them, says Yahweh, your God.
